Obituary

David John Norris Robinson 1941 – 2024

We are sad to announce the sudden passing of David on March 6th in Dorchester Hospital and send our thoughts and prayers to his family in Dorset.

David grew up in Leicester and started visiting Norfolk in his early years for holidays.  In later life he and his wife purchased their ‘hacienda’ at Beeston Holiday Park.  He subsequently moved semi-permanently to Beeston following his wife’s death and became a very active member of the club over many years, winning a variety of club competitions and trophies.
David was a true English gentleman as many of his friends at the Links will testify.  So much so in the last few years, titles like ‘Lord’ Robinson became more commonly known when he was being addressed.

Not only within the golf club was David well known – he was also a regular fixture in the Links Hotel.  Being a creature of habit, he had his own special table for one in the restaurant for full English every Thursday morning and roast dinner on a Sunday.

David was a very private person by nature, a wonderfully well-mannered man, and an avid Leicester City supporter.  Both he and his beloved dog ‘Honey’, who also graced our club over the years, will be remembered with great fondness by us all.

Announcement

The Links Golf Club Committee Meeting -Wednesday 21st February 2024

The full minutes of the latest Committee Meeting will be posted on the Club noticeboard by the end of this week at the latest though an update of an important change/development is announced now.

Over recent months full Terms of Reference for members of the committee and a Club constitution have been drawn up and these documents will soon be finalised. (This documentation did not exist prior to this). These will be finalised and be made available for comment in due course and final versions then be formally put to the Annual General Meeting in November.

For a number of reasons it was felt that some new blood should be injected into the club. The aim is to spread responsibilities more widely so as to re-vitalise the club with development, growth and, where necessary, change.

We wish to call upon skill sets some members have and to give them a chance to use those skills.

To this end the Terms of Reference, identify that the Committee are able to co-opt new members for specific roles. Those members can remain in position until the next Annual General Meeting when they, and all other committee members, have to stand for re-election following the processes laid down for such elections.

At the meeting we decided upon inviting seven new committee members who will particularly address issues of documentation, social events, hospitality, fund-raising, competitions and calendar as well as other areas that may need attention. (These members are Dave Brooks,Gordon Niele, Emma Richardson, Paul Richardson, Mary Rockliffe, Martin Shilliday and John Wells.)

As with any changes there can be teething difficulties but it is believed that once people get their feet under the table it will benefit the club massively. The first social night in January was testament to members 'wanting more' from the club.

(Details of the next Social Night will be sent out shortly once the date has been agreed by the hotel but do pencil in Friday 19th April for Bingo Night and the hotel will do food included in the price for the evening.)

Club Social Quiz and Presentation Evening

Friday 26th January 2024

Almost 60 members, ex-members, friends and family attended this first Social Evening of 2024.

Thank you to everyone who attended and supported the event and the feedback from so many and the hotel is truly fantastic. We are now working on the next event and we will try and get this information to you as soon as possible.

A number of members were disappointed that we did not have the presentation evening at the end of 2023 and so this was our opportunity to be able to do this before it became too late.

A well run quiz by Olly was won by the Muirhead Family and friends winning no less than £120 first prize. The second prize of £40 was a tie and rather than having a tie-breaker question both teams agreed to donate their winnings to the Club Charity for 2024. (Cancer Research UK).

The presentations went swiftly and efficiently with Malcolm and Joan Munday announcing the winner of the 2023 Golfer of the Year who was David Bates. Well done David and to all the other trophy winners who were present.

Sadly nobody won the £250,000 but there were winners of smaller cash prizes.

The raffle raised good funds and there were some very good prizes.

After prizes and costs we raised £352 which is the start of funding towards our current project of new bunker rakes for the course. (To add to the boot cleaning compressor (now installed) and the soil boxes for the tees (Paid and ordered).

Naturally a big 'Thank You' to Marc Mackenzie and the hotel staff for their help and, not least, for the complimentary food they served up for us. The Street Food was great and enjoyed by all - no empty plates and even better, there was plenty of 'second helpings' for those that wanted it.

(Should any of the assisting staff not be present at The Links anymore it is possible that they won the £250,000!)

Once again, very many thanks to all those who attended and/or assisted in any way whatsoever to make the evening the success we had hoped for. The Hole in One was buzzing!

Ladies Away Day at Dereham GC

The ladies met on a bright Monday morning for a cup of coffee and to collect their cards before embarking on their 18 holes.  Fortunately the weather stayed fine for us all.

After golf and a lovely lunch, Margaret who organised the day, gave out the results.

Jane Davies was our winner, with Margaret Hardy runner up and Kathryn McCrohon in third place.  The longest drive was won by Caroline Collett.

Norfolk Senior 9's at the Links

Due to Storm Babet, the original date had to be rearranged to the following Friday, October 27th.  This meant that 3 teams were unable to take part on the day, so the tournament had 7 teams competing for the trophy.

The teams met in the clubhouse for a Bacon Roll and a coffee/tea.
They all teed off at 9.30am with a shotgun start at all holes.  After play they enjoyed meeting up with other players from different clubs - some had played each other in Senior friendly matches - and watching results appear on the big screen as players finished their 18 hole Stableford.

Off to the hotel for a really excellent meal and the presentation of prizes, the optional 2’s competition and to collect their winning raffle prizes.

There were 6 players winning the 2’s, each receiving £5.50 each, all from other clubs and not The Links.

The winning team was Links ‘A’, with Mattishall ‘B’ the best Away team.
The Links team was Cliff Pegg, David Bayle, John Wells, Paul Attenborough, David Brooks and Ivor Collett - their five counting scores totalling 170 points.

A big thank you to Caroline for an excellent event.

Captain's Charity Trophy

The winner on the day was Cliff Pegg with a score of 38pts and Dan Bumphrey was runner-up on 37pts.

Third and fourth on 36pts were Mike Spicer and Mike Patrick.

Each player was asked to bring a wrapped prize, in a box.  This meant every player then received a pick of the prizes.

Dom Hazard won the longest drive on 2/11, David Bates won NTP on 3/12, Graham Muirhead won NTP with his 2nd shot on 9 and Irving Newton won NTP with his 2nd shot on 18.

There were no 2’s, so the pot was added to the entry fee and donation, making a total of £100 which will benefit the RNIB which is the Club Charity for 2023.

Our Photo shows Cliff receiving the trophy from Club Captain, John Seppings.

Couples Jug and Pairs Trophy

Hodds Salver

The Hodds Salver is for a Seniors team over 60 years of age and who have not played in the Myhill, Cullington or Barnard this season.

This year we had a home draw against our friends from Mattishall and won by 12 holes.

This meant we have another home draw, this time against Sheringham to be played in November.

Preferred Lies

Preferred Lies are in use until further notice. The long version of this local rule is as follows:

When a player’s ball lies in a part of the general area cut to fairway height or less, the player may take free relief once by placing the original ball or another ball in and playing it from this relief area:

- Must not be nearer the hole than the reference point, and
- Must be in the general area.

In proceeding under this Local Rule, the player must choose a spot to place the ball and use the procedures for replacing a ball under Rules 14.2b(2) and 14.2e.

But for the purposes of applying Rule 14.2e, the player has only chosen the spot on which to place the ball once the ball has been set down, and the player has let the ball go with the intent for that ball to be in play. After a ball has been placed and is in play under this Local Rule, if the player then proceeds under another Rule that provides relief, this Local Rule may be used again.

Vice Captains Day

On a low scoring day, Mark Nelson-Griffiths was the winner scoring 33pts.

Tim McCrohon was 2nd and Alex Shepherd was 3rd, both on 32pts with Brian Merritt 4th with 31pts.

All received a prize from Gareth Hall, Vice Captain.

The ladies winner was Jane Davies who also scored 32pts and received her prize from Jane Gomm.

Nearest the Pin winners were Mike Patrick on 3/12 and David Bayle with his 2nd shot on 9/18.

All competitors gave their entrance fee to the charity along with donations and also the optional 2’s money.  The amount of £125 will go to Cancer Research - the Club Charity for 2024.

30+ Competition

Tony Pashley won the final 30+ Competition of 2023 and with it also scored the most points from the 4 events.

His score of 19 stableford points for 9 holes was one ahead of Barry Davidson.

In third was last years winner Mike Patrick also with 18 points.

William Stursberg was playing in his first event and secured fourth place with 15 points

Overall 25 members took part in at least one of the events which took place between March and October.  There were some very mixed weather conditions along the way, but each event was well supported.

Tony scored a total of 76 points from the 4 events.

In second place overall was Mike Patrick with 63 points

Margaret Hardy was third with 59 points.

Fourth overall was Dee Farrow with 56 points.

The prizes were presented by Club Captain John Seppings. It was great to see so many members play in this competition. We look forward to next year!

Hugh McCrory 1938-2023

It is with great sadness that we heard Hugh McCrory passed away this week.

Hugh was Captain of the Links in the year 2000, and was one of the clubs longest standing members.

Hugh was immensely popular with club members. His smile, stories and gregarious nature meant he also made visitors feel very welcome and many would ask after him year after year.

Hugh won many trophies in his time at the Links, including the Gary Player Trophy in 2013 and 2015 and he was handicap champion in 2013 and 2018.

The Links Golf Club is fortunate to have had Hughie as a member. Our thoughts go to his family and friends.

Both Jane and Emma received cuts in their handicap indexes.

Our photo shows Kate presenting her trophy to Jane.

Clinton Cup

32 players teed up in memory of Jimmy Clinton on the hottest day of the year - no wind, unusual for us here.  After play Irving gave a speech recollecting Jimmy’s time at the Club.  Unfortunately, Jimmy’s best friend, Hugh McCrory was unable to be present on the day due to his poor health, Hugh was very disappointed not to be able to make it.

John Seppings, Club Captain, would like to thank all the members who contributed prizes to make it a very enjoyable day.

It was great that Jimmy’s daughter, Dawn, was able to join us all on the day and many stories relating to Jimmy were shared.  On the day £170 was raised and this will be shared equally between Jimmy’s charity, RNLI Broughty Ferry and the Club Charity.

Prize winners were as follows:-
Winner of the trophy was David Bates with a score of 41pts, Dean Knowles was runner up with 39pts, Mark Nelson-Griffiths scores 38pts beating Gareth Hall on count back.

Race to Woodall Spa

On the 17th and 18th of August both Mike Spicer and Emma Richardson took part in the National finals of 'The Race to Woodhall Spa' at the home of England Golf in Lincolnshire.

Both had secured places in the final after competing in the regional finals in May.

Prior to the round, each were treated to a celebration dinner the evening before and hosted by England Golf officials.

On the day both were up against very stiff competition of all ages and two very challenging courses.

With their names up in lights and clapped to the first Tee both took to the course, Mike played the Hotchkin course with its abundance of heather to cross and bunkers deep enough to hide a double decker bus, and Emma playing the Bracken course with its undulating and very fast greens and multitude of water hazards to cross.

In the end both achieved very respectable results, Mike finishing on 28 points placing him in 30th position against a field of 43 other players and Emma achieving 33 points putting her in 11th place against 58 other ladies.

A great achievement and experience for both players and club.

A very well done to both.

Margaret is the Ladies County Division 4 Champion

At the recent Division 4 meeting at Dereham, once again The Links came out on top.

Margaret Hardy was the Champion scoring an incredible 41 points.

The runner up, Lynn Jellicoe came from Eaton beating Susan Tuck from Mundesley on count back , both scoring 34 points.

Congratulations Margaret!

Stanley Mansfield Texas Scramble

A well supported turnout for this fun game of golf.  Stanley was the Secretary of the Club for many years and gave the trophy for it to be played as a enjoyable team event.

The winners on the day, with 5 drives each team member, in this Texas Scramble format were Ivor Collett, Dominic Hazard and Mike Spicer with a nett score of 53.

It must be said, that Dom Hazard has now won this trophy the last three times it has been played, but each time with different partners.  Some achievement!

Runners up were Cliff Pegg, Thomas Hall and Carolyn Hall (no relation) with a nett score of 54.

In third place were David Bayle, Kate Attenborough and Tony Medland with a nett score of 55.

It was so nice to see the members after their game enjoying a drink and the laughter echoed outside the clubhouse.

Gary Player Trophy

This trophy has been played for annually since Gary Player was our travelling professional in 1979 and is one of the most hotly contested trophies of the year.

Alex Shepherd was the man of the moment on the day, scoring a superb nett 63  - 3 under par - which has resulted in his handicap index being cut.

Runner up was Gareth Hall with a nett 67, with Dean Knowles third with a nett 71.

Next came three  players scoring nett 72, including our newest member Adrian Hannant.

Our photo shows John Seppings, Club Captain, presenting the Trophy to Alex Shepherd.

Last Player Standing

This is a 9 Hole match play competition.

The semi final of this competition was between David Bayle and Irving Newton and went to the last hole with David beating Irving 1 up to finish 3rd.

The final was between John Wells and Mark Nelson-Griffiths and again this went to the last hole with John winning 1 up.  John therefore became the Last Player Standing.

The final of the Complete Loser for those losing after they have played 2 rounds was between Cliff Pegg and Thomas Hall.  Once more this final went to the final hole with Cliff winning 1 up.

Our photo shows Gareth Hall, Club Vice Captain, presenting the trophy to John Wells.

Seniors Championship

Twenty one players teed off to win one of the three trophies available.

Our picture shows the three Champions with their trophies.

Rakes and Litter

Please could members leave rakes inside bunkers.

There is no overall policy on this and different courses have their own preferences for various reasons.

Please could we also ask any litter to be placed in the bins provided. Cigarette butts should be disposed of safely. Even though it is not as dry as last year, they must not be left on the grass.

Ladies Championship

The Ladies held their Championship on Monday 10th July.

Jane Gomm was the Scratch winner with a gross score of 88, followed by Jane Davies with Joan Munday 3rd.

Roles were reversed in the Handicap competition, with Jane Davies winning with a nett score of 65, with Jane Gomm runner up and Joan Munday third again.

Our photo shows the two Jane’s with their respective Salvers.

Club Championship 2023

The unusual hot weather had abated fortunately for the players as they began their 36 holes to become the Club Scratch and the Club Handicap Champion.

Irving Newton became the Scratch Champion beating David Bayle by 2 shots.

Dominic Hazard was the Handicap Champion beating Tony Medland by 3 shots.

No player can win more than one prize on the day, so the prize fund was divided between 8 players.

There was a rollover in the optional 2’s competition with Irving Newton scoring the only 2 on the 12th in the second round.

Our picture shows Club Captain, John Seppings, with the winners and their trophies.

Course Rating

The new course rating has been completed.

This will change the playing handicap calculation from 3rd July. Please note the chart by the first tee should no longer be used for competitions or handicap purposes. England Golf are currently advising against having a new outside chart because further national changes are due in 2024 which will again affect the calculation and require a new chart.

The new ratings for 18 holes are on the handicapping system and on howdidido. 9 hole competitions will be updated shortly.

To calculate your playing handicap for 9 or 18 holes, please use the R&A handicap calculator The R&A - Course Handicap Calculator (randa.org)

The three main course handicap tables are provided below and copies are on the main noticeboard as well as the noticeboards in the changing rooms.

Club Captain, John Seppings, presented the prizes (donated by Dominic) to the winning team of David Bayle, Emma Richardson and Tony Pashley.

Their score was nett 53, the runners up were on nett 55, along with another two teams on the same score.

Wensum Charity Day Win

A team of four ‘Likely Links’, Jane Gomm, Susan Tuck and Chris and Andy Rayfield, were delighted to come in first place at a charity event in aid of Dementia, hosted at Wensum Valley Golf club.

If ‘summer’ and ‘afternoon’ are two of the most evocative words to describe the English countryside during June.

The summer performance is enhanced by the bird sounds that travel across meadows to be heard on the protection of a golf course landscape where the melodic and orchestrated sound is released.

Occasionally and rarely interjected by a repetitive distinctive call from a cuckoo, evoking childhood memories of long summer lazy days, the ambience is a privileged experience for the golf player.

With this in mind a charity event was hosted at Wensum Valley golf course on Friday 16th June 2023 in aid of Dementia Care.

Twelve teams from Norfolk County participated with a team of four, Jane Gomm, Chris and Andy  Rayfield and Susan Tuck keen to support this great cause entering from the Links.

The team of four ‘Likely Links’ players’ were in full swing, taking it in turns to hit the ideal shot and score a consistent number of points on the front and back nine holes at Wensum Valley golf course, to delightedly come in first place.

Race to Woodall Spa

England Golf introduced a new competition for all golf clubs called The Race to Woodall Spa. EG had done the calculations to get the leading man and leading lady at each club.

Mike Spicer and Emma Richardson went through to the Regional Qualifier at Rookery Park as The Links representatives.   Both went for a practice round there just before the event.

On Sunday, May 12th, they both played in this Regional Qualifier.  Out of 30 men, Mike came 3rd with 38 points and out of 40 ladies, Emma was second with 41 points, which saw them both through to the final.

To get both of our Club representatives through to the final at Woodhall Spa is a great achievement, maybe unique!

Well Done to both!

We wish you both the very best of luck  - Mike on the 17th August and Emma on the 18th August - enjoy your day!

There was a good turnout for the Captain’s Cup, a stroke play event, with some very good scores returned.

The winner of the Cup was David Bates with 79-15=64.  Second was Ryan Neave with 77-12=65.

There were three players with a score of nett 66, but Craig Brown was third with 88-22=66 beating Irving Newton and David Bayle.

Special mention must go to Jordan White and Euan Neave who were playing thier first competition since achieving their handicap. As club rules state, they couldn't win today, but will be able to next time and today scored nett 63 and nett 68 - Well Done!

Club Captain, John Seppings presented the Cup to David Bates.

30+ 9 hole Stableford

The 16 members who took part enjoyed some great conditions, friendly competition and blue skies.

The third edition of this series is taking place on 22nd July with the fourth and final round in October.

Club Texas Scramble

The Club held a very well supported Texas Scramble, the winning team being Ivor Collett, Chris Rayfield and Dan Bumphrey with a nett 55.

There were 3 teams on nett 56, with John Seppings, Glenn Macdonald and Michael Bayle the best of the 3 teams.  3rd place went to Dave Wright, Dee Farrow and Craig Brown.

John would like to thank everyone for making it such a great day.  He would also like to say Thank You for the bottle donations to the raffle and to let everyone know that £130 was raised on the day for the club charity, the RNIB.

John also took the opportunity to present the prizes for the quizzes from the first two newsletters to the two winners, Craig Brown and Dan Bumphrey.

On what turned out to be a glorious day weather wise, Kathryn McCrohon, with 33 points, won the Millennium Trophy by 3 shots from Chris Rayfield.

Each winning lady also received a small gift to celebrate their achievements.

Ladies Away Weekend

This year, seventeen ladies travelled to Pidley Lakeside, Huntingdon, for their annual weekend away. All participated in the Weekend Away Day Trophy, a two day golfing event.

In a fitting finale, the results reflected the golfing prowess of the winner, Emma Richardson, who grossed 73 stableford points over the two days. Jane Davies, last year’s champion proudly handed over the green jacket from last year to Emma Richardson this year’s champion.

Susan Tuck was the winner of the 36 and below handicap division with 71 stableford points narrowly in front of Jane Davies with 70 points.

Jane Bassett came in first place in the over 36 Handicap division with 67 points.

It is a special time away  in the Ladies golfing calendar to spend two days together, and this year the ladies returned to Lakeside, the excitement was palpable, the location is ideal for golfing, ten pin bowling, quizzing, and generally having fun partying together.

Despite the anticipation that the weather would not be befitting of the event, the ladies were greeted with bright sunshine, the first trees of the year starting to go green and spring clearly on its way.

This news item can not convey the real comradeship, laughter and delight that the weekend provided, reflected in over 100 images shared on the ladies WhatsApp messaging platform.

Special cherished moments will be remembered, especially from the fund raising event held for this years Captains charity, hosted by Norma Neave, her planning, hard work and kindness certainly paid off with a magnificent £100 raised for the RNIB.

Greens Maintenance

Spring maintenance will be taking place on the greens on MONDAY 24th APRIL.

The nature of the work means that once the greenkeepers start on a green, they will not be stopping or pausing for golfers.

This will allow the work to be carried out in the most efficient manner.

Thank you for your cooperation and apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Preferred Lies removed

Preferred Lies no longer apply on the golf course.

Therefore players are no longer allowed to lift, clean and place their ball on areas cut to fairway height or less, unless otherwise allowed in the Rules of Golf.

Easter Egg Stableford

Fresh from winning the Easter Medal, David Bates won this competition with a tremendous score of 41pts using just 3 clubs and a putter.  This brings up the usual question of why do we need all 14 clubs in our golf bag?

In second place with 39pts was Mike Patrick and in 3rd place was Club Captain, John Seppings with 37pts.  2’s on the day were won by Tim McCrohon and Kevin Hadley.

Everyone who played in the beautiful morning sunshine took home an Easter Egg and the RNIB received a small amount from the entrance fees.
There was a great atmosphere with everyone enjoying the banter after play in the sunshine.

Our pictures shows a selection of the eggs and also of our winner receiving his egg from our Club Captain.

Ladies Diamond Knockout

The Links ladies were drawn away to play at Hunstanton in the above County 4BBB competition.

Warm sunshine greeted all the players and it was a delight to play their course.

Although the result was a win for Hunstanton, the ladies played to the best of their abilities.  Special mention must go to Jane Gomm and Chris Rayfield who won their match and also to Margaret Hardy who had not even seen the course before, but played extremely well on the day in her first County match.

A couple of photos are attached from the day taken by Susan.

Phil Crump Shield

Ryan Neave won his first trophy at the Links with a Stableford score of 39pts, beating Alex Shepherd on count back.

In third place was Tony Medland with 36pts.

This was also the first of 10 competitions, 5 each of Stableford and Stroke Play, which after the last one in late October, will determine who wins the Eclectic Trophy.

Captain's Choice Trophy

The Captains Choice Trophy was a Texas Scramble with the team of David Bates, Mike Spicer and Vince Ryan the winners on nett 52.

Ladies Daily Mail Foursomes

Jane Gomm and Chris Rayfield, represented the Links Ladies in the first National Competition played in 2023.

Paired up to play away at Sheringham in the Daily Mail foursomes on Wednesday 15th March, the challenge for the duo was to play against a seasoned pairing from Sheringham who were playing on their home turf, the Links team were beaten on this occasion.

The liquid song of a Skylark poured down from high above as the teams teed off in cold bright spring sunshine, a strong breeze buffeted the course as the match progressed.

The Sheringham team ‘threw the gauntlet down’, a renowned pairing of low handicap, successful members from the club’s large selection of lady members, they stamped their dominance on their own turf.

Congratulations to both Jane and Chris for ‘flying the flag’ for the Links Ladies.

Queen's Platinum Jubilee Trees

During the early spring of 2022 an initiative was put forward in celebration of the Queens Platinum Jubilee to plant some trees on the golf course by Andy Rayfield.

Any loose change and contributions collected throughout the year was rounded up to £140.00.

The normal month for planting trees would be November and December.  However, after a prolonged dry summer the local nurseries were not willing to lift the trees. The weather then decided to remind us all that we are not in charge with periods of extreme cold and heavy rainfall.

In conjunction with Felthorpe Nursery the following species were selected - 2 Red Bark Silver Birch, 1 Hornbeam, 1 Swedish Sweet Chestnut and 4 Holm Oak.

The trees were planted on Tuesday 14th March 2023, and with the predicted weather forecast there should be no need for any additional irrigation.

Andy would like to thank all the members who contributed to this worthwhile cause.

Seniors Winter League

Congratulations to Cliff Pegg for winning the Seniors Winter League.

Cliff was presented with the Trophy by Tony Pashley.

Details to follow

Winter League Results

Adam Bensley and Irving Newton won the club winter league after some outstanding golf in often challenging conditions.

This year saw only 5 of the scheduled 8 rounds taking place as the winter weather seemed to particularly affect Sundays.

Each of the 10 teams were able to 'drop' the lowest of their five scores.

Adam and Irving totalled 170 points, meaning they averaged 42.5 stableford points from each of the four counting rounds.

This year’s runners up were the experienced pair of David Bates and Tony Medland on 166 points after an exceptional final round of 45 points which was the best of the day.

In third place were last year’s winners Cliff Pegg and Mike Spicer on 163points.  Cliff and Mike presented the trophy to Irving and Adam.

Birthday celebrations

The members of The Links golf club have the luxury to boast that they have a breadth of entertainment space at the club to choose from; fitting to the relevant occasion where they can gather and celebrate special events.

On Monday 13th March, club stalwart, Norma Neave invited the ladies from the Links golf club along with some male members to the club for a celebration of her forthcoming birthday on Wednesday 15th March 2023.

A buzz of excitement had gently been flowing in the build up to the celebration. Windy weather blew in as if to stamp its dominance, and the planned game of golf had to be cancelled due to the windy conditions, however true to form this did not hamper the joy of being together, and we were generously treated to a bacon rolls extravaganza along with Norma’s lovingly homemade fairy cakes and a superb birthday cake.

Happy birthday Norma, we love you.

Ladies Coffee morning

Captain John Seppings had a nice surprise when Helen Newton gave me 140 pounds towards his charity .Helen and the lady members raised the money by having a coffee morning. John would like to personally thank you all.

The Ladies Winter League came to its conclusion on Monday 6th March.  The Ladies Winter League is played over 9 holes of Stableford and the best 4 scores from 6 are taken.

The winner this winter was Margaret Hardy with 61 points.

Second was Susan Tuck with 59, third was Jane Bassett with 58 and fourth was Jane Gomm with 56.

Congratulations to Margaret from all the ladies.

Jane Gomm presented with the Gwen Watts Salver

The AGM and Spring Lunch for the Norfolk Veterans Ladies Golf Society was held on Monday 27th February 2023 at Wensum Valley Golf Club.

The Society Awards its Trophies at the AGM rather than at the competition event on the day.

For the second year running the Links ladies were again in receipt of a trophy at the AGM.

In the Division 1 Championships, which were held at King's Lynn on 30th June 2022 some 56 Ladies from 14 Norfolk clubs took part.

The Links' Jane Gomm came in second place in the Handicap Competition (by just one shot) Jane was however the winner of the Gwen Watts Salver which is awarded to the best score for ladies over 65 years.

Congratulations Jane from all the ladies.

Ten Pin Bowling

The Links ladies social gatherings for 2023 kick started on Friday 24th February, when the ladies met for a boisterously fun game of ten pin bowling, the victorious team, were Emma Richardson, Margaret Hardy, Norma Neave and Chris Rayfield, Chris was the individual overall winner.

Twelve of the Ladies spent a memorable morning together at JR’s tenpin bowling venue in North Walsham. This was the first social event of the year enlivened by the ladies splitting into three teams: the competition ‘was on’, ‘coaching’ and encouragement by teammates was aimed at achieving the ultimate Strike- something that many of the ladies proved adept at !

The overall winning team were (L to R) Emma Richardson, Margaret Hardy, Norma Neave and Chris Rayfield. Chris achieved the individual highest score. The teams emerged to look forward to the golfing season ahead and to continue enjoying each others company.

A Winter Warmer from the Links Ladies

Ladies from The Links golf club West Runton did not hesitate to take up their needles and wool to knit squares to create blankets for the ‘residents’ who were to be discharged from Pine  Heath Ward, Kelling hospital.

As Shakespeare once wrote: “Poor Tom’s a-cold.”

And as the snowflakes danced down from a pewter sky, the tom-tits searching for food in the black branches of the wood edge seemed just as cold. Kelling hospital wanted to bring some warmth to people in their care and a message went out asking for blankets that could be given as a ‘keepsake’ and as a warming gift for residents to take home with them.

The ladies from the Links Country Park golf club beavered away to knit squares that were sewn together with a current total of six blankets being donated to Pine Heath Ward. The ward manager was thrilled and delighted to accept the gift on behalf of her team.

A special thank you is extended to all the Links Ladies for their time,  generosity of wool donations and participation in making this good cause such a success, we hope to continue knitting into the future and to be able to donate more.

Boswell Foursomes

Better weather greeted the members playing for the above trophy.

An untried pairing of Andy Rayfield and Kevin Hadley were declared the winners in this Foursomes format with a nett score of 64.

The Runners up were the experienced team of David Bates and Tony Medland just one point behind.

In third place were last year’s Winter League winners, Cliff Pegg and Mike Spicer on count back from two other teams with nett 68.

Andy and Kevin will represent The Links in the Daily Mail Foursomes Competition, the first round to be announced on 1st February.

Our photo shows the winning pair with 2023 Club Captain John Seppings.

Captain's Drive In

This year’s Captain John Seppings, started with a memorable 2 on the first hole, but was beaten to first place on count back by Ivor Collett, both scoring 19 points.  Ivor won a bottle of whisky and John won some chocolates.

2023 Club Captain John Seppings, ladies representative Caroline Collett and seniors representative Mike Spicer struck the first tee shots of the new year. Members bought lollipop sticks which they placed where they thought the three drives would finish.

Mike Patrick was the only one who thought that John would find the green and won a bottle of wine for showing faith in the new Captain. Adam Bensley also won a bottle of wine as nearest to Mike Spicer’s Drive and Ivor Collett won a box of biscuits as nearest to Caroline Collett’s Drive.

As members putted out on the last green, they were greeted with a glass of mulled wine and then enjoyed mince pies in the clubhouse.

The result of the Drive In was a win for the Captain and his team, with the Seniors and Ladies teams both scoring the same points total.

However the winner on the day was the RNIB with £100 in total raised from the purchase of the lollipop sticks, the 2s fund and a donation.

Boxing Day Cup

Club Captain David Bayle put up a creditable display in defending the cup he won last year with a nett score of 34.

However, it was not enough to prevent Thomas Hall from winning on the day with a great nett score of 32 over 9 holes.

Both Thomas and David have had their Handicaps cut as a result.  In 3rd place was Dave Bates with a nett score of 36.

Our picture shows David presenting the Cup to Thomas.

Put and Take Christmas Lunch

In a fitting finale to late spring, the early summer, and the autumn’s golfing pursuits the Ladies did not let the freezing weather and change of plan dampen their spirits to enjoy the annual ‘Put and Take’ Christmas lunch event.

So, no golf competition to applaud a podium gold, silver or bronze position on this occasion. An altered plan to compete in darts, pool, putting and building a tower of cards in the ‘Hole-in-One’.

The day started with a tot of mulled wine, mince pies and the Ladies singing together followed by games.

The individual winners were:- Chris Rayfield who achieved the highest score at Darts, and Jane Gomm won the putting after a playoff. Jane Bassett was the best at Pool and Kathryn McCrohon proved to be the most adept tower builder with playing cards.

The winning darts team were Norma Neave, Joan Munday and Mary Rockliffe.
The winning putting team were Emma Richardson, Kathryn McCrohon and Margaret Hardy.
The winning pool team were Jane Bassett, Chris Rayfield and Dee Farrow.

This year proved unusual as the winner of the planned golf competition event was to have been invited by the Ladies Captain, Susan Tuck to represent the Ladies' section in the Captain's drive-in, this annual privilege is usually bestowed on the Ladies' Captain.

As the Ladies' section is to be run by a committee of five previous Ladies Captains in 2023, consideration was taken as to who should fulfil this traditional role, Caroline Collette was invited and will drive off for the Ladies on January 1st.

The warmth and comradeship proved once again to provide the resilience to enjoy some fun together. In keeping with the festivities that the Christmas season brings, the ladies had suitably dressed for the festive event. The choice of dress may have been a complex dilemma, the individuality reflected the joy and happiness of the day.

In the warmth and ambience of The Links Hotel, the ladies lunched and celebrated together, creating a joyous atmosphere, as a farewell for Susan Tuck in her role as Ladies Captain. Susan will have many happy memories to reflect on, inevitably they will be fondly recalled, suitably embellished and laughed about in the future.

THANK YOU SO MUCH SUSAN, FOR A GREAT DAY AND A FANTASTIC YEAR AS CAPTAIN!

Presentation Evening 2022

Earlier in the day, players teed off in the Champions Medal.  The winner for the second year running was Adam Bensley with a nett 64.  Second was Cliff Pegg on count back with a nett 65 from Alex Shepherd who was third.

In the evening, members arrived at the hotel ready for the presentation of trophies won during the year.  Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal and fun and laughter could be heard.

The hotel had been busy decorating the function suite with white lights on all the Christmas trees and looked like a winter wonderland.

The evening began with Adam being presented with the Champions Medal, followed by the winners present all receiving their trophies to much applause.

The last trophy to be presented was the Player of the Year, which Malcolm and Joan Munday had donated.

Consistency and constancy won through for David Bayle who scored in 20 competitions even though he only won 1 competition.

Runner up was John Seppings  who only scored in 13 competitions, but had 4 wins.  Third place went to Ivor Collett, 4th was David Bates, 5th was Dean Knowles and 6th was Andy Rayfield.

A disco with dancing and drinks followed which rounded off a great evening.

For the detailed 'Golfer of the Year' result, please see the Results section for November.

Update to the Rules of Golf

The R&A and USGA have unveiled a regular update to the Rules of Golf as they continue to make the Rules easier to understand and apply. The new Rules will go into effect on 1 January 2023.

The 2023 edition continues the modernisation process, with an emphasis on both inclusion and sustainability. For the first time, the modified Rules for players with disabilities have been fully incorporated into the playing rules without the need to adopt a local rule. The governing bodies, supported by longstanding partner Rolex, will also promote digital and mobile app access to the Rules while significantly reducing the production and distribution of more than four million printed books.

Several penalties have been relaxed and language has been clarified to help golfers at all levels of play.

Key changes include:

- Modifications for Players with Disabilities: The modifications to the Rules for players with disabilities have been made part of the Rules and are in effect for all players who fall under the categories covered in Rule 25.

- Handicap Usage in Stroke Play: With the continued growth of digital scoring following the adoption of the World Handicap System, players are no longer required to show their handicap on their scorecard in stroke play. The Committee will be responsible for calculating the player’s handicap strokes for the competition and using that to calculate the player’s net score.

- Club Damaged During Round: The Rule has been amended to allow a player to replace a club that is damaged during a round, provided the player did not damage it through abuse.

- Ball Moved by Natural Forces: A new Exception provides that a ball at rest must be replaced if it moves to another area of the course or comes to rest out of bounds after being dropped, placed or replaced.

- Back-on-the-Line Relief Procedure: The back-on-the-line relief procedure, often used for penalty area and unplayable ball relief, has been simplified so that the player now drops their ball on the line, and the ball must come to rest within one club-length of where it is dropped.

Golfers will be able to learn more about the major changes and view the official 2023 Rules of Golf by following the links below or by visiting RandA.org.

Links Turfmasters

This was a competition that proved very popular last year when it was played over the Ryder Cup weekend.

This year, it was The Links versus Norfolk.  Both teams were drawn at Random by Club Captain, David Bayle.

The competition was a mixture of Foursomes and 4BBB over the Front 9 holes with all holes counting.  Then everyone played Singles over the Back 9 holes, again every hole counting.

At the end, The Links team were the winners by 60 holes to Norfolk’s 53.5 holes.  Everyone really enjoyed the day and many a hard luck story was shared.

Club Pairs Knockout

Chris and Andy Rayfield won the Folly Pairs Trophy beating David Bayle and Adam Bensley after a very hard fought final.

In the end the match was settled on the 18th green and Chris and Andy won by one hole.

Our photo shows Club Captain David Bayle presenting the trophy to the winners.

Ladies Away Day at Swaffham

This year's venue at Swaffham golf club for the Links ladies' annual away day trophy proved ideal for Ladies Captain Susan Tuck who won with 49 points, making her very proud to be first.

In the second position with 28 points was Jane Bassett and in third place, scoring 27 points was Jane Gomm.

The ladies also played for the Longest Drive, with Jane Gomm the successful golfer. Nearest the pin was won by Jane Davies, and the straightest drive was won by Margaret Hardy.

A stone's throw from one of Norfolk's most convivial market towns, Swaffham golf club is located down a winding lane and a charming venue to have met for the annual away day trophy.

Although the weather was damp, the Ladies kept their spirits up to meet together, over a hearty lunch.

As ladies' Captain, it is with some sadness that I write this report as the ladies' golf season for 2022 draws to a close, this was a fitting competition as 14 ladies enjoyed a truly wonderful game of golf good company and celebrated ideal and not so ideal moments in their games, a perfect away day as the season comes ever closer to its completion.

30+ Trophy

This year the proud winner of the nine-hole 30+ Trophy was Michael Patrick with a score of seventeen points, on countback also with seventeen points in the second position was Kathryn McCrohon, closely followed by Gordon Neile with fifteen points.

The popularity of the competition was reflected by the sixteen players who were playing during November with a sense that wildlife and holidaymakers had hunkered down.

In the true spirit of the game, a joyful atmosphere was evident in the ‘hole-in-one’ as the players waited for the final result.

Mike was presented with the Trophy by Susan Tuck, Ladies Captain (and two time winner of this competition).

Captains Charity Trophy

On a fine morning, the players, including ladies, teed off in anticipation of winning the trophy.

As they finished their rounds, they were able to contribute to the Clubs Charity for this year.

The winner was Ivor Collett with 40points.  Barrie Bensley was runner up with 36points and third was David Bayle with 35points.

However, the winner on the day was the Clubs Charity, Young Lives v Cancer,  with a total of £132 raised.

Couples Jug and Pairs Competition

Congratulations to everyone for enduring some of the worst weather we have experienced in any competition this year.

Both 9 holes were subject to a torrential downpour which left everyone soaking wet.  The competitions were a 4BBB format.

The Couples Jug was won by Helen and Irving Newton with Kathryn and Tim McCrohon runners up and Caroline and Ivor Collett in third place.

In the Pairs Competition it was the mother and son combination of Emma and Oliver Richardson who were the winners.

NLCGA County Club Stableford

On Sunday 16th October 2022, the grand final of the inaugural Norfolk Ladies County Club Stableford competition took place at Mundesley. The Links Ladies were represented by Margaret Hardy, who was placed fifth.

At Mundesley, Margaret played in a field of 18 players all of whom had competed previously to represent clubs throughout Norfolk.

Whatever the season, venue or opponent, the Ladies from The Links have throughout 2022 consistently demonstrated their spirit and character to play a tight game against much larger clubs. Margaret continued this ethos, in what were superb autumnal conditions at Mundesley.

As Ladies Captain I would like to extend my delight and congratulations to Margaret.

Vice Captain's Day

Twenty five players took part on a lovely sunny day in this annual competition.

The winner on the day was Oliver Richardson with 42points.

The Runner up was Dominic Hazard with 37 points on count back from Craig Rouse.

The Ladies competition was won by Joan Munday, second was Jane Davies and third was Caroline Collett.

John would like to thank all the sponsors for the Competition prizes, Nearest the Pin prizes and the Longest Drive prizes as well as all those that donated items for the raffle.

The charity which was the winner on the day and benefitted to the tune of £230 is the Royal National Institute for the Blind.

Norfolk 9's Result

The team from The Links were Runners Up to Feltwell with the holders Searles A in third place.

The 5 highest scores out of the teams of 6 counted and were added together.

In addition, Dave Bayle won Nearest the Pin on the 3rd, John Wells was third on count back in the individual competition and Dave Brooks won a share of the 2s pot with a 2 on a par 4!

A very enjoyable day for all those who took part in the competition.

Amron Trophy

The AMRON trophy is our annual charity ladies competition, sponsored by Norma Neave, hence its title “AMRON”, a name she gave to a beloved dog.

This years winner with 37 stableford points was Emma Richardson with Margaret Hardy in second place on 31 points followed closely by Jane Gomm with 30 points.

With a handicap index limit of 40, many of the ladies played well beyond their normal course handicap. Emma demonstrated that she was not fazed by the limited playing handicap, winning the trophy.

The coastal setting and variable weather conditions on the day at times created a teasing illusion of Mediterranean conditions, although a more autumnal feel soon became prevalent.

With generous contributions from the event and a successful raffle, Norma was thrilled to have raised £180 towards the Club charity, Young Lives v Cancer.

In the Mens Stableford competition, Ivor Collett won with 37 points. In second place was Dom Hazard and third was Club Captain David Bayle.

An enjoyable game of golf and successful day was experienced by all.

40's weekend 3 clubs and a putter

The Links members got into the spirit of the 40's Weekend by dressing up for the 3 clubs and a putter competition.

Despite this, those that played enjoyed some very good scores with the winner, Glenn Macdonald, scoring 41pts.

Runner up was Alex Shepherd with 37pts and third was Club Captain, David Bayle with 35pts beating Dom Hazard on count back.

Our photo shows those in 40s dress with Glenn and the 40s trophy.

Links Ladies achieve 4th Place in the County Waltz

A team from The Links Ladies Section, comprising Caroline Collett, Jane Gomm, Emma Richardson and Susan Tuck travelled to play at Wensum Valley, on Tuesday 13th September 2022, to play in the Norfolk Ladies County Golf Association County Waltz, returning a respectable result of fourth from twenty two teams.

The Links team set off and played a respectable front nine holes playing to par they realised they needed to ‘pull their socks up’ if they wanted to be in the running for a podium position once they had completed the eighteen hole Wensum Course.

In their usual supportive team manner the ladies kept their heads and encouraged each other, as their pace improved around the course achieving a total score of 90 stableford points for fourth place.

The weather was a typical sultry September day, perfect for golfing - the greens proved to be the most unpredictable part of the equation during the game.

The NLCGA President led the proceedings at the presentation with a minutes silence in respect for the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Ladies friendly at Wensum Valley

The  Links ladies team travelled to Wensum Valley for their final away friendly match of the 2022 season, fittingly the result was a friendly outcome… a draw .

Some elegant golf settings do nothing to dispel the myth that golf can be a competitive sport, the Links ladies were keen to do well in their last friendly match, away at Wensum Valley, a location that is renowned for its two diverse courses. The ladies played on the valley course, teasingly close to the river Wensum, that seemed to pull the golf ball towards it no matter the direction of intended play.

The parched conditions playfully bounced the ball into unpredictable places for both teams, promoting a healthy appetite to win the competition. Determination, partnership and a bit of luck - was bolstered by the camaraderie that the ladies from West Runton naturally have.

Some competitions are pretty much run relying on the love for the game and willingness of the participants, this was evident here with a drawn final friendly result.

Professionals Cup

At last, a trophy for our Club Captain after many second place finishes, who also won the monthly medal.

David Bayle won the trophy on count back from Gareth Hall, both with a nett score of 62.

Third was Andy Rayfield continuing his recent good scores, with a nett 63.

Our Photo shows Vice Captain, John Seppings presenting the cup to Club Captain David Bayle.

Bill Prince Trophy

Nineteen seniors teed off in perfect weather for golf, cloudy but fine.

John Seppings became the winner of the trophy with a nett 64 beating Club Captain, David Bayle on countback.

Third was Dave Brooks with a nett 65.

Our photo shows John being handed the Trophy by Dominic Dyer, our Director of Golf.

Nibari Trophy

Another superb day for golf.

Great conditions set the scene for the Nibari Trophy Stableford.

Congratulations to Mike Spicer winning the trophy by 1 point from the captain with a score of 41 Stableford points.

In third place was Andy Rayfield on 38 points, just beating Irving Newton into 4th on count back.

Change to WHS PCC calculation

Playing Conditions Calculation (PCC) update

Since the launch of the World Handicap System in November 2020, England Golf has received feedback from golfers, clubs and counties on a wide range of topics.

One of the most talked about aspects of WHS has been the Playing Conditions Calculation (PCC) and its lack of movement compared to the old Competition Scratch Score (CSS).

We have been analysing this very carefully across GB&I and have presented this to The R&A to help with their own research and that of other countries on this topic. As a result of this work, we can report that a change will be made to the algorithm that calculates PCC.

Statement from The R&A/USGA

Analysis of scoring data provided from 24 countries around the world indicates that a change to the rounding method used within the current PCC algorithm would increase the instance of an adjustment for abnormal conditions by an average of 5%.

For example, in countries where an adjustment for PCC only occurs on average 10% of the time on eligible days, this change will increase the average to about 15%.

This small change, recently approved by the Handicap Operations Committee, is in response to feedback from national associations that the current PCC algorithm is too conservative.

While this may feel like a small change, we expect the impact to be significant in highlighting days where a player’s performance was significantly different from that expected by the system.

Please note that there will be no change to the visibility of the calculation. This is an algorithm built within the WHS and is not available to clubs.

This change will not be made retrospectively and will take place on or around Monday 22 August.

The Links Away at Sprowston Manor

On Monday 15th August, a team of eight ladies played a scheduled friendly match away at Sprowston Manor, Norwich with the result of being All Square.

The expectation was that the team of ladies from The Links at West Runton, would be hard pressed to beat their opponents on their home turf.

Set in a suburban setting the Sprowston course was unpredictable to read as balls landed, bounced and travelled with what seemed to be their own impetus at times.

The terrain was scattered with seventy-two bunkers proving that the ladies could shift some sand when required to do so.

The hosts were a very friendly team as opponents go, with the final score being equal with both teams winning two matches.

The day was topped off with a super afternoon tea and plenty of cake to enjoy.

Stanley Mansfield Trophy

The team Texas Scramble for the Stanley Mansfield Trophy once again proved popular with the members.

Teeing off in brilliant sunshine with no wind, the conditions were challenging.

However the team of Andy Rayfield, Kate Attenborough and Dominic Hazard played extremely well and returned a score of nett 52.

Runners up were Paul Attenborough, Vince Ryan and Mike Spicer with a nett 54.

Third were David Bates, Gareth Hall and Norma Neave with a nett score of 55, beating Dean Knowles, Tony Medland and Talbot Field on count back.

Our photo shows the winning team with David Bayle, Club Captain.

Peggy Francis Trophy

The results of the 2022 Peggy Francis Trophy, a charitable event held on Monday 8th August, raised £55 for the current years charity Young Lives Vs Cancer was a resounding win for Norma Neave with 39 points.

Kate Attenborough came in second position with 35 points, beating Caroline Collette OCB who also achieved 35 Stableford points.

As one might expect when the Peggy Francis Trophy is to be played, there would be plentiful competitors, limited to three clubs and a putter.

This year was no exception with £55 being raised towards the Captains charity.

The generous idea for the Peggy Francis trophy came from her husband, both were former members of The Links golf club and are remembered fondly by those who recall playing with them.

Gary Player Trophy

On a hot Sunday morning in August the annual competition for the respected Gary Player Trophy took place.

A quick look at previous winners of the trophy showed two people had each won it three times before, Tony Medland and Rick Taylor.

There were some very good scores with Mark Nelson-Griffiths and David Bayle getting their Handicap indexes cut.

Mark Nelson-Griffiths won with a fantastic score of 80-22=58, the runner up was David Bayle with 75-13=62 and Glenn Macdonald third with 85-17=68.

This meant that Mark joined Tony and Rick as a three time winner of the trophy!

Last Player Standing

Despite the weather forecast saying no rain, the morning players got drenched in a sudden squall which meant they had to change their clothes.

Then the afternoon players got soaked again when another sudden squall rained down on them.

The competition ended with Mark Nelson-Griffiths becoming the new champion defeating Ivor Collett in the final on the last hole.

In the play off for 3rd and 4th places, Mike Patrick defeated Tim McCrohon.

In the Complete Loser final, David Bates beat Dominic Hazard

Seniors Play for Ukraine - Blues v Yellows

The Seniors held a 4BBB event in aid of Ukraine.

The event raised £110 with gift aid bringing the total to £137.50.

This event became a very close match with matches being 2 to the Blue team and 2 to the Yellow team with one match halved.

However, the result was a win for the Yellow team by just one point.

The best team of the day were Barry Davidson and Talbot Field with a tremendous score of 49pts.

Nearest the Pin winners were Martin Shilliday on the 3rd/12th and Andy Rayfield with his second shot on the 9th/18th.

After play, food was provided from the Seniors Fund, with thanks to Joe and Megan in the Hole in One.

Ladies County Stableford

Result of the Ladies County Club Stableford competition, played on Monday 25th July, first place, Margaret Hardy with an impressive 41 points, Emma Richardson, second with a score of 37 and Jane Davies a close third with 36 points.

It is a rare event to participate in a competition that had its inaugural year in 2021. This year the Ladies County Club Association launched the county competition involving twenty nine clubs drawn from around the region.

To enter the competition each club hosts their own qualifying competition with the winner earning the privilege of representing their club at a neutral base in the regional final.

The Ladies from the Links played their qualifying round on Monday 25th July, Margaret Hardy will receive a voucher for £15 and represent the Links Ladies at the regional final play off. Emma Richardson in second place was generously awarded a voucher for £10. Jane Davies was a close third.

We look forward to supporting the onward journey and await the outcome in this county competition with bated breath.

As Ladies Captain I would like to convey my congratulations to Margaret in being the pacesetter for this event.

Ladies County Championship - Division 4.

Golf is a great way to meet people and integrate communities, and because it is not a contact sport, although reasonably physical, the popularity of the game was evident as seven Norfolk teams came together to compete at Mattishall golf club in the Norfolk Ladies County Association Championship Division four on Thursday 21st July.

The Ladies from the Links played to defend their 2021 title with one change to the team with Margaret Hardy taking the mantel of Jane Davies, who has deservedly progressed to Division Three.

The unfamiliar course provided a source of entertainment as the team of three progressively played round the course, returning back to the clubhouse on more than one occasion as the nine hole course repeated a similar pattern on both the front and back nine order of play!

The ladies from the Links were able to take the opportunity to connect  with other players from the region as they awaited the results for the team event, coming  in a respected  second place with 83 points narrowly beaten by a team from Wensum Valley who achieved 86 points whilst Bawburgh were placed third with a score of 79 points.

The individual places were also celebrated by the team, Susan Tuck came second with a score of 42, Joan Munday was fourth with 41 points and Margaret Hardy came a very respectable seventh with 39 stableford points.

Seniors Championship

Fortunately the very hot weather had cooled down somewhat by the time the Seniors teed off in their Championship.

The day produced some very good scores and as a result, Cliff Pegg became the Scratch Champion with a gross score of 81.

Eric Bailey became Handicap Champion with a nett score of 59 (he also has 2 x 2s) and Tony Medland became over 70s Champion with a nett score of 63.

There were also handicap cuts for other players following their round.

Lakeside - Australian Spoons

Hurrah! for both Norma Neave and Emma Richardson, our two Lady golfers looking to emulate their successful win at The Links reached the regional final of the Australian Spoons competition hosted at Lakeside Lodge, Huntingdon.

The competition took place on 20th July, with 48 pairs lining up in the field.

The winning pair from each regional final qualifying for the national final, to be held during Golf Week at the prestigious Woodhall Spa golf club.

Our team prepared quietly in the usual spirit of the Ladies section at The Links, practice, do your best and overall enjoy the experience and the game.

Norma and Emma, gave the rest of the field a good run for their money and came a very respectable seventh.

Huge congratulations to both Ladies from the rest of the ladies section.

Ladies Championship

The ladies play for several Trophies throughout the course of the calendar year, undoubtedly the Ladies Championship 18 hole medal competition is the most coveted - with great pride for the winners to have competed for the Scratch salver  or Handicap salvers and to share the success with one’s respective family and friends.

The BBC weather presenter Carol Kirkwood had informed her viewers that the weather was to be glorious and her prediction did not disappoint-  as exceptionally warm conditions prevailed throughout the day.

The ladies set off, to play their best golf in a healthy competitive way. Returning to the hole in one, seating area overlooking the magnificent  18th hole green. As the group shared their match play golf experiences, drinks and ice creams  they eagerly waited for the results.

As Ladies Captain it was an absolute joy to present Chris Rayfield with the Scratch Championship salver with a gross round of 89.

It was also a privilege to present The Handicap Salver to Joan Munday with a handicap  score of 69.

Club Champions

Hot weather greeted the players as they started their 36 holes for the Club Championship

A halfway stop for refreshments was welcomed by all.

At the end of the day, Dom Hazard became Scratch Champion and Dean Knowles was the Handicap Champion.

Runners up were Barrie Bensley and Tony Medland.

The only 2s of the day came from Craig Rouse in round 1 and Barrie Bensley in Round 2.

Full results are below.

Links Ladies host Royal Norwich

A team from Norfolk’s premier county club, the Royal Norwich golf club travelled to play a friendly game of Greensomes hosted by The Links West Runton ladies on July 4th.

There was a sense of anticipation as to how the visitors would fare in their match away from their usual parkland setting of mature trees, woodland and reasonable open fairways.

In contrast to The Links magnificent coastal views, renowned hills and tight course that is so often beset with unpredictable cross winds that can tease a golf ball whilst in flight.

The Links course did not disappoint, as the teams sparred their way around the course concluding their game with light refreshments and much chatter between the opposing teams, with the final result of the visitors from Royal Norwich golf club winning the match.

Captain's Day

A beautiful but windy start to the day preceded some very good golf.

Craig Rouse won the Captain’s Tankard with a score of 44 points - he also won the prize for nearest the pin in two with his second shot on the 9th.

Runner up was Tim McCrohon with 43points with Club Captain, David Bayle third with 40 points.

Kate Attenborough won the Ladies Rosebowl with a score of 38 points.

Ladies Captain Susan Tuck was Runner up with 35 points and Kathryn McCrohon was third with 33 points.

Kate, Stephen Church and David Bayle(2) won the 2s competition.

Kate, Craig and Tim all had their handicap indexes cut.

On the third hole, Dominic Dyer, held a ‘Beat the Pro Challenge’ with a few players managing to beat him.

Other winners on the day, were Chris Rayfield, who won Straightest Drive on the 2nd, Tim McCrohon won Nearest the Pin on the 3rd, Susan Tuck won Nearest the Pin on the 12th and Nearest the Pin with her second shot on the 18th.

On offer after the golf were lots of things to do including a lucky dip, how many tees in the jar, spot the ball and an auction.

The biggest winner on the day was the Club Charity, Clic-Sargent Young Lives v Cancer for which £350 was raised and both David and Susan would like to thank all those who gave so generously.

Ladies Folly Cup

On Monday 27th June the ladies had an earlier start than usual to play in tranquil conditions, as they tee’d off at 07:30am to compete in the Breakfast - Folly cup competition, a ritual that has not lost its charm.

There was a fever of anticipation in the calmness of the morning weather as the players returned to the hotel following their game, to share thrilling high and lowlights over a celebratory breakfast as they waited for the results.

The endeavours of the ladies were finally revealed it was Chris Rayfield whose golf we celebrated as the winner achieving 36 points, beating Jane Gomm into second place with 35 points and Susan Tuck came third with 34 points.

Ladies Gillieson v Royal Cromer

The Gillieson county tournament is a coveted trophy to win, the Links ladies played away in the second round at Royal Cromer on Sunday June 26th.

The  team from the Links of three pairs of ladies played in a foursomes format finding inspiration and encouragement from each other, a concentrated focus and pride in their performance on the unfamiliar terrain.

Perhaps more indicative of this challenge was the final outcome as Royal Cromer won the match, yet the urge for the Links Ladies was largely to celebrate and learn rather than complain from the experience.

Garden Party

The Links ladies are always ready to enjoy their time together and high summer is an ideal time throw an outdoor garden party.

The lunchtime event was hosted on Friday 24th June, preparations included clearing a stream, mowing a paddock and filling a small paddling pool.

Sunshine filled sky captured the relaxed mood, surrounded by quintessentially British charm as the ladies raced boats in the stream with the winner being Wendy Seward closely followed by Chris Rayfield.

A variety of games including, pitching, and ‘welly wanging’ during the afternoon following a BBQ lunch also took place with the generosity of the ladies golfing section at The Links West Runton raising  £73 towards the chosen Captains charity, Young lives Vs Cancer.

Hole-in-One

It was a lovely evening for golf and 14 players teed off on the back 9 for the Thursday roll up.

There was a HOLE In ONE on the 14th for Paul Richardson.  He thought he had lost his ball and after searching left and right and in the bushes, returned to the hole and lo and behold there was his ball marked PR in the hole!

In an evening with extremely good scoring, John Whittle, Oliver Richardson and Paul Richardson all saw their Handicaps cut.

Everyone enjoyed a drink with Paul to celebrate his achievement.

Breakfast Cup

The annual Breakfast Cup began at 5.30am, but this year unfortunately there was no sunrise to see, but fortunately no rain either.

The winning team in the Texas Scramble format were Vince Ryan, Oliver Richardson and Gordon Neile with a nett 51!

This was Gordon’s first foray into a competition, so he was delighted with his win.

Second were the team of Tim McCrohon, Tony Pashley and Paul Richardson with a nett 53 and third place went to the team of Andy Rayfield, David Robinson and Norma Neave with a nett 55.

After play everyone enjoyed the usual good breakfast in the hotel.

Australian Spoons

Five pairs of ladies played in weather akin to the summer that may be experienced ‘down under’.

The Australian Spoons, foursomes stableford format suited Norma Neave and Emma Richardson who scored a very respectable 46 points to earn the opportunity to represent The Links Ladies and play in the regional final at Lakeside Cambridgeshire, an event scheduled to take place during July.

Jane Gomm and Margaret Hardy were close on the tail of the winning team to come second with 44 points, beating Caroline Collett and Kathryn McCrohon into third place with 26 points.

Captain's Cup

This competition ended in 3 players with the same score of nett 62, so the result had to be decided on count back.

The winner was Irving Newton, who had not won this trophy before.

Second was Tim McCrohon with Craig Brown in third place.

Our photo shows Club Captain, David Bayle, presenting the trophy to Irving.

6) ELECTRIC FENCE

The electric fence is an immovable obstruction from which free relief MUST be taken, again under rule 16.1b described above.
