THETFORD GOLF CLUB - GOLF CLUB STEWARDS ASSOCIATION - EAST ANGLIA

CHAIRMANS DAY

Monday 12th October 2015

The Sun shone on Phil Beer for his superb Chairmans Day at Thetford Golf Course on one the finest Norfolk woodland challenges. A bacon roll followed by 18 holes of golf in warm October Sunshine was followed by a good pint and a superb meal provided by Theresa and the team. The prize table was as good as you can get with some great prizes.

As is quite normal the Locals did well in the 4 Ball Better Ball Guest prizes, the Thetford members winning on countback with 43 points from another pairing from Thetford with Southern Region Stewards guest Richard Berry and his partner in 3rd place with another 43 points

The East Anglian Stewards prize went to and Oldie and a Newy. Eric Roast and his partner Duncan MacDonald met in the clubhouse for the first time around about 10.00 but by 3.15 the pairing had bonded so well that their 39 points was good enough to take the main prize.

Superb hospitality and a really great fun day for the 53 that sat down for Dinner- Thanks to Thetford Golf Club , Phil & Theresa

2014 Norfolk Ladies Championship

Thetford’s Junior Girls shine in the County Championship

The 2014 Norfolk Ladies’ County Championship  played at Eaton GC Friday 16th – Sunday 18th May.

Friday was qualifying day. Jessica Dixon returned two 79’s, total 158, to qualify 7th  and Abigail O’Riodan scored 84 and 78, total 162 to qualify in 10th spot.

Leading qualifier was Tracey Williamson from Royal Cromer on 146 with Karen Young of Eaton second on 147.

On the downside Jessica and Abigail are due to play each other in the first round of the match play.

Thetford was able to field two teams for the Team Trophy, Heather Keeble and Kath Malvern in one and Jessica and Abigail in the other. Jessica and Abigail’s  nett totals  of  148 and 134 repectively  team total 282 gave them a two shot victory over Tracey Williamson and her daughter Amelia on  284.

For the nett trophy, Abigail’s 71  in the morning followed by an amazing 65  in the afternoon made her the clear winner.

Thetford in top 100 review

Thetford Golf Club reviewed by Top 100 Golf Courses website

Following on from a visit from Andy Newmarch of Top100GolfCourses he has put the following review on the site.

Thetford Golf Club was originally nominated as a Gem by Ian and was added to the Top 100 website in July 2007. Since then, Thetford debuted in our inaugural 2011 English second hundred and subsequently became a prominent player in our Norfolk Best In County rankings.

Ian’s original nomination comments are as follows: “Have played Thetford Golf Club several times and really think it should appear as a "gem" as a minimum. It’s a good test of golf, built within a pine forest. Greens have always been excellent when I’ve played there and the 18th is a tough finish – 470-yard par 4 uphill. I believe Thetford is better than Gog Magog and Hanbury Manor (though HM is a very different course).”

The course at Thetford has a lot going for it, the first obvious one is the setting – woodland all around which is reminiscent of the great courses at Ashridge and Royal Ashdown Forest. There is also a comparison with The Addington in the fact that both courses open with a par-3 and have another short hole at the Thetford Golf Course - Photo by reviewer3rd. After this shortish start, holes 4-6 are pretty strong. The next three at the 7th, 8th and 9th could be described as a little ‘up and down’ – all par 4’s and similar in length. The back 9 is the stronger of the two halves and the opener is a great sweeping dog-leg to the left par-5, followed by what looks like a straight forward par-3 but by having trees on all sides gives a very attractive look. More good holes follow all the way to the 16th, which is a 155 yard par-3 that could be lifted and put on any of the world’s classic inland courses and not look out of place – it is all carry over heather and sand, brilliant. The 17th hole gives you something and the 18th could very well take it straight back; 17th is a 500 yard par-5 and the 18th is a tricky 425 yard par-4, my own finish was birdie/bogey which I am told is quite common. The club has a friendly atmosphere and has a decent visitor welcome – worth playing and probably a little low in the current Norfolk county rankings (#7) for me.
