Golf News – Seniors

 

Stowmarket Golf Club has a thriving Senior Section that holds an annual dinner in February.

Stableford competitions are held every month usually on the first Tuesday and these are keenly contested by an average of 64 members on each occasion. Annual events either allied to, instead of or additional to the monthly stableford’s include: AGM, Charles Grayston Salver (only medal round), Invitation Day, Captain’s Day, Seniors Trophy and a Progressive Stableford. These events are followed by a pre-ordered lunch provided by the catering staff.

From March until October around 36 matches (home & away) are played against other clubs in the County. These include Thorpeness and Felixstowe on the coast and Stoke-by-Nayland and Thetford inland. At home, matches are played against the Ladies and the Juniors.

The Final Fling

 

In March 2008 the Seniors’ Captain decided to have an away day on his last day in office and was looking for a course to play that did not feature on the list of Seniors’ matches. He selected the Gog Magog Golf Club, Cambridge as it was within reasonable distance as well as being a good test of golf.  Around 45 members joined him for this first ‘Final Fling’.  Since then it has become an annual event and is open to all members of the Club who are aged 55 or over.  It is played the day before the Seniors’ AGM and regularly attracts over 60 participants.

Since 2012 a trophy has been played for in memory of Terry Bayley, a member of the Seniors’ committee, who died suddenly the previous year. The’ Final Fling’ was his last game of golf with the Seniors. In order to qualify for this trophy, the winner must have played in at least four of the Seniors’ monthly competitions played on the first Tuesday of the month.
