Tree planting begins - 10th March 2010

About 4000 Forestry Commission funded trees and shrubs are being planted on the new land this week, to provide boundary hedging and landscaping tree belts. The job should be completed by Friday, by a team comprising the Greenstaff and Club Members, plus a contractor with a hydraulic auger to make the planting holes.
FAQs:
What species are being planted ? They are all UK native species. For the tree belts it's 30% oak, 15% ash,10% field maple, and 5% each of hornbeam, aspen, willow and alder, plus 25% woody shrubs. For the hedge it's 75% hawthorn and 25% woody shrubs including dogwood, hazel, blackthorn, buckthorn, geulder rose and spindle.
Why are the trees planted in straight lines ? This is to facilitate mowing between the rows in the early years of growth. Eventually the lines will not be apparent, see next question.
Why are the trees planted so closely ? Up to 20% loss is expected up to about year 5, at which stage the trees will be thinned out and from then on the plantations will be in irregular clumps, rather than the straight lines of the initial planting.

Winter Programme - Work on the 3rd - 12th November 2009
WINTER PROGRAMME
The final part of the Winter Bunker programme will be the building of a raised mound to the right of the 3rd green as recommended by Hawtree in is his 2001 report. The idea is to counter balance the weight of the left hand greenside bunker and at the same time give players an additional visual aid to help locate the precise position of the green.
The work will be carried out over the next week or so. This new feature will be either turfed or seeded in the New Year and will be marked as GUR until the Spring.
Your support and cooperation will be appreciated during any period of disruption.

Chairman Green Committee

2009 Presidents Weekend 26th & - 27th September 2009
2009 PRESIDENTS WEEKEND
KEN COOPER - President
The weather was gorgeous and held all weekend for Ken Cooper’s Presidents Weekend.
218 golfers entered the competitions set up for this annual event and between them they managed to eat 300 sausage rolls and enjoyed Ken’s generous hospitality out on the golf course.
For 14 hours Ken cheerfully handed out his refreshments and was overwhelmed by the number of members that helped to raise £452 for his nominated Charity – The Multiple Sclelosis Society. Ken’s wife Joan had been up since 4.30am to prepare the food and drinks for the day and Ken presented her with a huge bunch of flowers in the evening of the presentation. He did comment that this had delayed her from her usual weekend tasks around the home such as the pile of ironing that needed to be attended to.
The evening presentation of prizes was attended by over 70 members and prize winners were in attendance to receive their prizes (and some of Ken’s much appreciated wit).
For a full list of the prize winners please visit the results page. In addition Ken would like to congratulate:
Trevor Holley on the longest drive down the 5th measuring just over 300 yards! The very special prize of a weekend for 2 at the 4 star Belton Woods Hotel with 2 rounds of golf was won Di and Ivor Evans. This prize was drawn out of the competitors cards playing in the Sunday Mixed Greensomes event.
Ken would like to thank everyone for their support and generosity in raising the money for his charity (which has now been distributed) and for making his day such a special one to remember.
P.S. Ken would also like to thank the Secretary and his wife, Jackie, for all their help over the weekend in helping out and processing all the cards on time.

Trial use of material... - 7th September 2009
TRIAL USE OF SURFACING MATERIAL
The Green Committee have recently purchased some new material to be used on the course in areas where the ground is uneven or becomes water logged.
The material is pulverised ash that is harmless to the environment and humans.
It has been used extensively on golf courses and areas where drainage is an issue. Grass will grow through this material and become hard wearing and very absorbent.
Behind the greenkeepers compound a track has been covered with this material to see how it performs with the traffic of the greekeepers machinery.
It is envisaged that this will be used more frequently in the coming weeks and months if found to be acceptable to the green staff on improving ground conditions when autumn/winter arrives.

Parks Team lose out at Bury - 13th August 2009
Disappointment for Parks Team in Semi Final
In near perfect golfing conditions at Bury St Edmunds Golf Club on Thursday 13th August, the Stowmarket Parks team were unable to beat Haverhill GC who eventually won by 8 holes
The games were all very tight early on and after 9 holes it was still all to play for. There were a magic moments from both sidea with but it was some long putts and chip-ins that swung the match in favour of the strong Haverhill team.
The details were:
Nobby Clark and Tom Collett lost 4 down. Gerry Sparling and Bob Osborne lost 3 down. Keith Rooney and Jeff Gilham lost 5 down. Roger West and Russel Green won 4 up.
Bad luck boys, we'll be there again next year.

Junior raid on Norfok - 13th August 2009
Rising Stars Continue to Sparkle

Henry Cutting, Jack Forgan & Casha Nijharwin won the Team Shield in the Junior Open at Sherringham on Thursday 13 August. Apparently it was the first time the shield had left Norfolk so the boys were quite rightly very proud of themselves. Henry is also continuing his winning streak with a best individual score of 65 winning the Duffield Cup at Sherringham on the same day. All three boys are in the Suffolk Under 14's County Squad. |

Patrick Spraggs 2009 Club Champion - 10th August 2009
PATRICK IS STOWMARKET CLUB CHAMPION 2009

There was an exciting climax to the 2009 Club Championship when after 36 holes two of the Stowmarket stars Sam Forgan (0) and Patrick Spraggs (+1) were level on 139 and had to go down the 1st in a sudden death playoff.
In front of an large gallery of supporter both Sam and Patrick pushed their drives in to the right hand rough just short of the pond on the Par 5 509 yard hole.
There second shot were very similar coming out of the rough about 240 yards from the green. Sam's well struck mid iron stayed left and landed in the the left hand rough just above the green side bunker. Patricks shot followed Sam into the rough but a little bit farther both were left with tricky third shots over the bunker on to the fast sloping green. Sam played first and hit a super high shot that landed softly just off on the fringe leaving a slick down hill putt. Patrick struck a similar shot again but this time the ball landed right by the flag but rolled on down the green leaving an uphill putt of about 25 feet. Partick holed the putt for a great birdie 4 leaving Sam a tough putt to keep the game alive which sadly for him he missed.

This result caps a fantastic summer so far for Patrick

Captains Weekend ...thanks to all who joined in - 2nd August 2009

Two hundred and twenty five entrants played in the 2009 Stowmarket Captains Weekend they were rewarded with great weather and with the course at its magnificent best the scoring was of the highest quality. There were gasps of envy when players saw the lenght of Sam Forgan's drive at the 5th hole which won the longest drive for the men beating Chris Underwood's great tee shot by a few yards.
There were prizes for nearest the pin on all par 3 holes over the weekend. At one stage Dave Smith held two out of five until the penultimate Mixed match when Martin Anderson knocked his tee shot to 11 inches at the 11th.
Patricia Wilding hit a great tee shot at the 17th to win the ladies longest drive and Jane Holley hit her tee shot very close at 18 to take the nearest the pin on that hole.
The leading Lady Stableford prize for the weekend went to Sue Knights on countback from Kim Davis with 42 points.
The winning Mixed Greensome prize went to Paul & Jackie Presland with 43 points. The Mens prize was won by Matt King who only joined the club recently with a fine 43 points off of his 14 handicap.....he wont see 14 again for a very long time now he has been cut to 12.1.
The oustanding score of the weekend and winner of the overall competition was 13 year old Henry Cutting with a stunning 47 points off of his 25 handicap, he is now 21 handicap and a real star in the making . Watch his handicap tumble in the months ahead. When he received his prize from The Captain he made a speech that sounded as if it came from a practiced after dinner speaker, it was obvious to everybody present that this golfer will go far and is a credit to his parents and Stowmarket Golf Club.
Well Done Henry.

Hambro team through to 2009 Final - 27th July 2009

The Stowmarket Hambro team Captained by young Bill Darling (a lot older now after this tight finish) fought back from a huge morning deficit of 8 holes against a strong Diss team to win in the most dramatic fashion on the last hole at Hintlesham on Sunday 26th July.
After the traumas of the morning Bill initiated a couple of subtle change in order and brought in David Walker for the afternoon matches and thankfully the team were rewarded for their efforts with an amazing win by 1 hole.
With some fantastic golf being played the afternoon matches were off to a great start with Martin Darling and Kenton Jameson continuing their outstanding form this season coming home 6 holes to the better of the quality opposition. By the time that Tom Darling and Patrick Spraggs stood on the 18th tee in the afternoon the scores were level after 143 holes of stunning golf. With both teams in the rough on the right, Ken Mcredie, Tom's caddy dissapeared into the trees, was it nerves or was it the Peroni at lunch? Perhaps we will never know. Tom chipped out sensibly and with the Diss lads taking three to get out and then flying into the pond in front of the green all that was needed was a good shot to the green from Patrick and the game was ours.
What a great win. Thank you to all members and caddies that supported the team it was much appreciated.
Now the team are off to Rushmere to play Ipswich Golf Club in the final on Sunday 23 August 2009.
Please come and support your team and help them win the Premier County trophy for the first time since the mid-nineties.

HAMBRO LADS STORM TO SEMI FINAL
Bury St Edmund Hambro team must have wondered what hit them when they found our Hambro team in awsome form at Stowmarket yesterday.
With three former Stowmarket members in their team they had high expectations but these had been battered out of them by the completion of the morning matches leaving Stowmarket 12 up.
When our leading pair Martin Darling and Kenton Jameson finished 4 up in the afternoon the writing was on the wall and the game had already slipped away. Some great performances all round by the Stowmarket team ended with an emphatic victory.
Martin and Kenton actually finished 9 up on the day to a former Stowmarket Hambro player Matt Fordham and his partner. All the other other matches were a bit tighter but victory was secured with a great margin of 16 holes up.
The Stowmarket Team Captained by Bill Darling was:-
Martin Darling & Kenton Jameson
David Walker & Tom Darling

2009 Captains Drive In - 28th March 2009

Pictures coutesy of Ivor Evans and James Duncan
********************
A big thank you to all the members that supported the Captains "Drive In" weekend. A pretty horrible morning weather wise on Saturday followed by a lovely bright beautiful day on Sunday. Martin Andersons 38 points in the wet on Saturday was the best score overall and his mates will be please to know he is now playing off 11. Sharon Davey was the top lady but the Captain did notice some ladies choosing to sit in the bar rather than go out in the cold and damp weather on Saturday
-
The Mixed Greensomes was won in the sun with a magnificent 41 points fro Teresa Wardlaw and Andrew Witter. See full results on the results page of the website.
-
Thank you to all who tried in vain to put the Captain off with loud whoops, claxons, whistles and bells. The drive just scraped past the recent record of Lionel Denny's (246 yards) coming in at 248 yards. Can Ivor Evans beat it next year?
-
John Rowland won a bottle of malt whisky by guessing correctly the length of the drive. More than 200 members competed during the weekend and over £150 has already been raised for the Captains favoured Charity SSAFA.
-
Thank you to everyone members family and friends

Retiring Roger Radiant After Rifling 1st Ace

Roger West with Club Steward Chris White and the bottle of Rioja Bordon
Stowmarket Golf Club Secretary, Roger West secured his first Hole in One to add to his previous golfing accomplishments over many years in the game.
Roger retires from his job at the club after 10 years as Club Secretary Manager in April. He is a past club captain and served for many years on the Board.
9 handicap Roger secured his “ACE” with perfectly struck 4 Iron on the par 3, 159 yard second hole at the club on Saturday 14th March 2009. He generously made available a bottle of whisky to share his celebrations with fellow members.
Roger was playing in the Captain/Pro Challenge with the incoming Vice Captain Ivor Evans in which they qualified in first place with a fantastic 45 points, better ball score, off of three quarters of their handicap. Ironically it was also the same day that the Club Board and previous Club Captains that he had worked with, paid tribute to him for all his hard work for the club at a special Board dinner.
At the Dinner he was presented with a 6-litre bottle of Rioja Bordon an award that is sponsored by suppliers A & A Wines Limited.
