BEV & JANE OFF TO ST. ANDREWS

On Friday 20th August Stowmarket hosted the Area Final of the Peugeot Coronation Foursomes at Stowmarket. We were one of 16 Area Finals in the UK and we had 116 ladies playing on the day. We are delighted to report that Bev Waspe and Jane Holley won with 38 Stableford points and now qualify to enter the Grand Final at St Andrews on 20 Sep 10.
It was also pleasing to hear all the praise given by visiting players on how good the course was and the warm welcome received. With a great help from many of the Ladies in our section we also raised just over £500 for the Lady Captains Charity

| Suffolk Girls Allowed at Wentworth ..... - 23rd May 2010 |
|
GREAT INITIATIVE FROM DUNCAN LEADS TO AWARD FROM GOLF FOUNDATION
On Wednesday of last week Eleanor Tindall, Antonia Ridley, Holly Davies and Danni Lee joined me at Wentworth Golf Club to collect the Laddie Lucas award from the Golf Foundation. The award was given in recognition of the Girls Allowed Project that ran throughout last year and was presented in front of 120 influential people from the golf industry. The girls were given a real treat as Bernard Gallacher presented the award and walking around the course they got to chat to Ernie Els, Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Padraig Harrington. The girls also helped out on the Golf Foundation stand were they worked with Ken Brown, tour players Rebecca Hudson and Felicity Johnson and Ross Fisher.
Girls Allowed starts on Thursday 8th July between 7pm and 8pm. It is free and open to all girls with or without prior experience, junior girl members from the golf club run the sessions under my guidance. It’s a lot of fun and a great way to introduce your daughter or grand daughter to the game. If you would like to get involved please get in touch with me to book your place.
Suffolk’s ‘Girls Allowed’ earn the applause at Wentworth

A Suffolk project to encourage girls into golf was an award-winning hit during The European Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship, at Wentworth Club, Surrey, on Wednesday.
‘Girls Allowed’ is an initiative started by PGA head professional at Stowmarket Golf Club, Duncan Burl, following discussions with the Golf Foundation, the leading golf charity that makes golf more accessible to children. Christened ‘Girls Allowed’ by Foundation Regional Development Officer Katie Cooper, this is a special club where young leaders encourage younger girls to learn about the basics of the game in a safe and friendly environment, with an emphasis on fun and the social aspects of the sport.
Duncan coaches the group but the young leaders run their club. With money from the government’s ‘Sports Unlimited’ fund, and Sport England’s Small Grant Award, they take the game to new players in schools and invite them back to the Girls Allowed club to develop their golf. During the last year, 20 girls new to golf enjoyed the delights of the sport through this club and all are playing regularly.
So enthusiastic have the young leaders been that the team from Girls Allowed won one of the Golf Foundation’s prestigious Annual Awards, presented at a special ceremony on Wednesday in Wentworth Club’s famous Ballroom. Former Ryder Cup Captain and Foundation Vice President Bernard Gallacher presented four girls – Danni, Eleanor, Holly and Antonia – with their award for the best local initiative (The Laddie Lucas Award), in front of a packed audience of VIPs.
Duncan Burl said after the ceremony: “The girls were absolutely delighted to win this award and I’m delighted for them. It is well deserved. As a team we have reached out and included many girls who previously had not thought of golf as an option. Having young leaders to mentor these girls has been really successful.”
Brendon Pyle, National Development Manager for the Golf Foundation, said: “Girls Allowed shows how the imagination of a professional and enthusiasm of young volunteers can be a highly productive mix to encourage girls into golf. This is a great example of what the Foundation is looking to achieve with volunteers in support of the national golf partnerships of England, Scotland and Wales. Young leaders can be excellent mentors and really help youngsters in their development.”
Before the awards ceremony the girls enjoyed a real treat as they helped BBC commentator Ken Brown and Ladies European Tour stars Rebecca Hudson and Felicity Johnson take part in a Tri-Golf challenge with youngsters in Wentworth Club’s tented village. At the junior golf centre, which was made available by The European Tour, Danni actually teamed up with Ken Brown in the quick-fire challenge while the rest of the Girls Allowed team did the scoring for the event.
Later, out on the course at Wentworth, the girls got to meet one of their heroes, Ryder Cup star Lee Westwood, during the championship pro-am. Lee walked and talked with the girls on the fairway and signed autographs. Lee is a Golf Foundation Golf Roots Ambassador and a great supporter of junior golf.

| Tree planting begins - 10th March 2010 |

About 4000 Forestry Commission funded trees and shrubs are being planted on the new land this week, to provide boundary hedging and landscaping tree belts. The job should be completed by Friday, by a team comprising the Greenstaff and Club Members, plus a contractor with a hydraulic auger to make the planting holes.
FAQs:
What species are being planted ? They are all UK native species. For the tree belts it's 30% oak, 15% ash,10% field maple, and 5% each of hornbeam, aspen, willow and alder, plus 25% woody shrubs. For the hedge it's 75% hawthorn and 25% woody shrubs including dogwood, hazel, blackthorn, buckthorn, geulder rose and spindle.
Why are the trees planted in straight lines ? This is to facilitate mowing between the rows in the early years of growth. Eventually the lines will not be apparent, see next question.
Why are the trees planted so closely ? Up to 20% loss is expected up to about year 5, at which stage the trees will be thinned out and from then on the plantations will be in irregular clumps, rather than the straight lines of the initial planting.
