Dear Reader,

Welcome to Stowmarket Golf Centre's February Newsletter. I would firstly like to say a big thank you to all of you who have persisted with playing and practicing through the winter months. It was great to see your enthusiasm and commitment to golf and I'm sure it will pay off when the season starts. This months newsletter will keep you informed of exciting developments and events happening at the centre this month.

 Community golf
 Competitions & weekend social events

From March 2008 we are running events to promote a community feel in the golf centre. Our ambition is to make the centre as fun, sociable and relaxed as possible while giving everyone the chance to make new friends.

To enter the events you first have to play 9 holes 3 times and hand your cards in to reception, I will then award you a handicap. Your handicap is the average of your 3 rounds and will appear on the notice board inside reception. Please don't worry about your first handicap, my first ever round of golf took me 131 shots over 2 days!

To work out your handicap I add the three 9 hole scores together and divide them by three to get your average. Then I subtract the par of the course (29), this leaves the number of shots over the par for the course that you average and that becomes your first handicap.

To play in a competition you have to play with someone else who also has a 9 hole handicap, you pay a £1 entry fee (plus your greenfee if your not a member) and go round 18 holes (9 holes for under 16's). Remember your handicap is for 9 holes so if you're playing 18 holes its doubled.

We record your results like this: Actual score - handicap = net score 1st Ernie Els 92 - 46 = 46 2nd Luke Donald 76 - 26 = 50 3rd Vijay Singh 104 - 48 = 56 4th Tiger Woods 66 - 6 = 60 The lowest net score wins the event and prizes will be awarded to the top three in both the adults and juniors competition. The bottom half of the results sheet won't show any scores, all it will show is an alphabetic list of the other entrants. If you've had a bad day the last thing you want is for it to appear on the board.

I will lower your handicap if your net score is better than 29 reflecting your good play. At the end of the year all our winners will be invited to a pro's vs. amateurs match to crown the champion of champions. As we all get used to the format and numbers increase I will introduce different games, they may be pairs, alternative shots or cross country. It should be lots of fun and a great way to measure your progress.

We will also be running Saturday and Sunday social events. If you would like to meet new people or you don't have anyone to play competitions with then 10am on a competition weekend is "roll up" time. Anyone with a handicap can join and partners are randomly drawn from a hat. It's a nice way to have game of golf guaranteed. We play in groups of 2, 3 or 4 depending on the number of entrants. Anyone joining in with the Saturday and Sunday social can have 25 balls for the range free before they play so be there 30 minutes early to warm up.

Please get in touch with me if you have any questions, it appears a little complicated at first but once you have played a couple of times it will become really easy and a great way to play golf.

 Tree Planting Day
 Sunday 24th February 2008

trees We are delighted to announce we will be holding our first tree planting day at the golf centre on Sunday 24th February from 10am - 1pm. The tree planting is open to all adults and children. There will be professional people at hand to show you the correct way to plant a tree. Wellies and suitable clothing are a must.

We have approximately 150 tree's to plant. These tree's have kindly been donated by John Matthissen who is the Onehouse local councillor . By doing this he is fulfilling his pledge that he would plant one tree for every vote he got. If you have any tree's you would like to donate or plant. Please feel free to come along all donations are gratefully received..

The tree planting day will also include the second phase of the tree's already sponsored last year. Once this has been completed we will arrange a day in the spring when everyone can come down and see there tree with there own message on. If you can't come down to the centre we will be producing a tree map so you will be able to see your tree.

We look forward to seeing you and hope that this will be the start of many more wildlife and environmental projects at the golf centre.

 Ping for 2008
 Duncan's club test review

Ping driver 2008 I am delighted to say we have received our 2008 delivery from Ping.I couldn't wait to get the demo G10 driver on the range and see if it was as good as the rumors suggest.

The look of the driver is smart and tidy, the compact head shape and a deep rich red shaft give the club a great look and it immediately made me feel comfortable at address. Its uncomplicated look was matched by the sound it made, none of the "clink" of a Cobra just a very solid, meaty crunch that suggests power - a proper driver at last!

The head has been reshaped giving great aerodynamics, it felt balanced and very very powerful. I loved it! The results were very interesting, I certainly couldn't shape my shots as much as other drivers but the flight was very consistent and I felt I would have hit a lot of fairways. The shaft had life but was controllable and I attempted hitting some harder and softer shots with more success than I enjoy with my current driver.

The G10 and I10 irons are typical Ping. The G10 has a massive sweetspot with lots of perimeter and sole weighting, the flight was strong and the distance was surprisingly long.

The best bit - Ping has never been more affordable. To buy a set of Ping clubs today would cost you less than they would 10 years ago!

Please get in touch if you would like to meet me on the range to try Ping out, you won't be disappointed!

Thank you for reading our new newsletter. We hope you enjoyed it. We look forward to seeing you at the centre. Spring is definitely on it's way!
