Suffolk Past Captains visit Stowmarket

Report Coutesy of Paddy Lockwood

The Spring Meeting and AGM of the Suffolk Past Captains Association was held at Stowmarket Golf Club on Thursday 8th May. Prior to the day the Secretary was expecting 51 people to play with 18 brave enough to risk the 13 hole morning event as well.

Having threatened to be poor weather for the previous matches the threat turned to reality as the heavens opened and but for a drier interlude in mid afternoon it pelted down. A number of hardy souls carried on regardless and some others turned up, had a look, had lunch and went home - dry.

For those that did stay it was not a day for big scores. The morning round saw some very wet cards but in third place was Adrian Gipson with 24 pts with second Keith Cresswell also 24 pts on countback (his 5 for 1 on the 11th was crucial) but the clear winner was Donald Munro with a par score of 26pts.

So to the afternoon round seeing the President and home captain Pat Shepherd lead off with President elect Michael Spencer. The harassed secretary was late on the tee and out of position but the ever willing and wet Charlie Wilderspin had organisation dumped on him. This delay clearly did not upset playing partner Brian Clarke who freed of organisational responsibility was toward the top of the scoring.

By the close of play around 7pm the greens were showing puddles but we all got round. There were some excellent examples of I used to be indecisive but now I am not so sure but well done to all those that stayed out in the worst of the weather.

The result did show the importance of the venue and value of the home course as the podium was packed with players from …. Stowmarket.

The results were:

1st Ron Woodham (20)  Stowmarket 39pts (on countback last 9)
2nd Ian Duncan (13)  Stowmarket 39pts
3rd  Keith Cresswell (26)  Fynn Valley 37pts
4th Pat Shepherd (9)  Stowmarekt 33pts (on countback last 9)
5th Peter Mills (19)  Newton Green 33pts
6th Brian Clarke (19)  Ufford Park 32pts (on countback last 9)

The trophy for the past presidents was retained by Les Turner Haverhill with 30 pts and is returned to Haverhill Golf Club for safe keeping.

At the following AGM Michael Spencer was voted in as President. Barry Storey Vice President and Chris Briggs joined the Council. The secretary was retained for a further year.

All in all a good day, despite the weather, with the hosting by Stowmarket first class and the food and service of a very high standard.

Seve at Stowmarket?

A true golf club legend!

Peter Morton (right) receives the framed limited edition signed print of Seve Ballesteros from donor Detmar Hackman in front of the original painting by Anne Mackintosh.

Past President and “two time” Captain of Stowmarket, Peter Morton, won a fantastic framed limited edition of Golfing legend Seve Ballesteros in a lottery organised by outgoing Suffolk PGA Secretary Tony Garnett to raise funds for the Seve Ballesteros Foundation and the Suffolk PGA

The Seve Foundation supports Cancer Research.

The first prize was a limited edition framed portrait of Seve Ballesteros which is signed both by the great golfer but also by renowned artist Anne Mackintosh.

The print was donated by Mr Detmar Hackman of Sabona Arthritic Relief Co. He is a member at Aldeburgh Golf Club and sponsors the Suffolk Ladies’ Golf Association. He has also been very supportive of the Suffolk Professionals.

Mr Hackman was a friend of Ballesteros who was among the many top sporting stars to wear a Sabona copper bracelet. Ballesteros surprisingly decided against buying the painting. It seems, despite his wealth, he always remained very careful with money. Mr Hackman took the opportunity to make the purchase and then arranged for limited edition prints. Ballesteros is wearing a Sabona bracelet in the picture.

Typically when Peter was presented with the picture he said: “I shall hang the print at home to let my family see it and enjoy it. Then I think I shall hand it over to Stowmarket Golf Club.”

What a gentleman!
