Finally the first Captains social golf evening is scheduled for Weds 10th May from 5.30 & we look forward to seeing everyone for a fun 10 hole game & a drink afterwards.

Jubilee Cup & Daily Mail 2017

The Ladies Jubilee Cup team recently took on Halesworth in the first round winning at the first extra hole after a very close match.
In the next round they take on Felixstowe Ladies at home on the 17th May & we wish them good luck in their endeavours.

In the Mail on Sunday foursomes Mark Edgerley & Alan Middle took care of business beating Thorpeness 5 & 4 at Seckford & now await news of their next opponents hopefully with another home draw.

Easter Tankard & Vase 2017

Congratulations to Paul Flannigan & Carol Wood on winning the Easter Trophies.

In the Tankard 67 men took part starting at 08.00hrs from the 1st tee with the last group setting off at10.40hrs in warmish but chilly weather with the wind playing it's part which reflected in some of the scores.

At the end of play three players were tied on 39 points with Paul Flannigan triumphant on count back from Liam O'Donovan & Jason Cook in 2nd & 3rd place.

The Vase was contested by 22 ladies from 11.00hrs in similar conditions to the men & resulted in Carol Wood returning a winning score of 37 points from Julie Cook in 2nd place on 36 points beating Karen Last into 3rd place also with 36 points on count back.

After a long day the Captains presented the Trophies to the victors at the same time thanking all those who had stayed on & a special mention to Bob Higham who worked tirelessly from early morning till late afternoon on reception & collating the scores.

Thanks also to all the staff & green keepers for their hard work.

Kinsey Trophy 2017

The Kinsey Trophy was played for on Friday 7th April in fine conditions. The format was a Stableford singles event and had 56 seniors playing on the day. At the beginning of the week however we were very sad to be advised that Barry Kinsey, the sponsor and good friend to Seckford had died suddenly. In fact he was due to attend to make the presentation of the trophy. After discussion with the family it was agreed that the event would not only go ahead, it would be played into future years and the entry fees would continue to be used to support the Parks and Beaumont competitions.

A close competition saw John Roche win with 38 points on countback with John Robinson in second place. There were then six players on 36 points and on countback David Hammond was third with Rod Everson forth.

On presenting the prizes the Seniors’ Captain thanked the Kinsey family for their continued support and the green keeping and catering staff who all helped make the day a great success.

Dick Bailey Trophy & Seniors' Birdie Tree

Dick Bailey Trophy 2017

The seniors’ first trophy of the year was contested in fine weather on 15th March. Participants are drawn in pairs for a 4BBB Stableford and last year’s winning pair of John Robinson and Steve Adcock stoutly defended the trophy. There were 58 seniors’ playing in what became a keenly contested competition with the holders posting an excellent score of 47 points. There were 5 pairs on 46 points and for most of the morning it appeared that the holders would prevail. However, as is often the case, a late finishing pair came through and Steve Jewhurst and Malcolm Kay posted 50 points and took the trophy. Third on countback were Andy Pitcher and Keith Johnson. The trophy was presented after an excellent lunch and in addition we were pleased to welcome Trevor Jones, sponsor of the seniors’ ‘birdie tree’ who presented the trophy for 2016 to joint winners Trevor Barber and John Arnott. There was also a tie for second place involving David Whittaker and Steve Jewhurst. A well organised event which was enjoyed by all. Our particular thanks to the catering and green keeping team who made the day a real success.

Seckford Foursomes 2017

The Seckford Foursomes took place on Sunday in fine weather & a large field of golfers with the 1st tee in use for 3 hours.

Competition was keen with scores very close but the victors were Tom Rose & Marcia Thorpe with a nett 65 having been paired together on the day due to their original partners being unavailable.

Runners up on count back with a nett 67 were Paul Ward & Sam Pollexfen from Ray & Jan Connett in 3rd place.
Thank you to those who stayed for the presentation to the winners afterwards whilst enjoying food & drink on the patio & the restaurant staff for catering to our needs & also the green keepers for preparing the course.

Finally thank you to Bob Higham for masterminding the signing in & collation of the results.

Daily Mail Competition 2017

The first round of the Daily Mail foursomes were played recently with mixed results with both the Ladies & Men being drawn away to Felixstowe & Woodbridge respectively.

Sadly Di Lewis & Carol Wood lost their match at the first extra hole having not been behind at any stage of the match.

Mark Edgerley & Alan Middle played their match in atrocious weather at Woodbridge but overcame their opponents 4 & 2.

Quaich 2016

Following a very enjoyable President's Xmas Dinner the previous evening the Staff & Officer's took on the member's in the Quaich which the latter were looking to continue their winning streak.

However after 8 matches played in pairs(Hambro scoring) this year's victors were the Staff & Officers by 12 holes.

Every match was keenly contested with the result close apart from Paul Ward/Bev Versey & Ian Bedford/Arron Teager combo's who won by 5 & 4 holes respectively for the Staff & Officers.

Thank you to all competitor's especially Roger Wilcock who came in at the last minute to play & the staff for looking after us both on Saturday Evening & Sunday.

The highlight on Sunday was a hole in one on the 16th by Jon Anderton playing for the members & everyone joined him in the bar to celebrate afterwards.

Turkey Trot 2016

87 members turned out on a warm chilly Sunday to play in the Turkey Trot which for the first time saw vouchers given to both men & lady winners.

Paul Ward was victorious in the men's section winning with 43 points from Paul Thresh, John Cunnell & Alan Norman.

Di Lewis won on countback from Mel Curle in the ladies section with Joan Cook in 3rd. 23 ladies played & this was a good turnout & justified our decision on the route took by providing the prizes the way we did.

It was good to see a full club house after play enjoying food & beverage before the presentations to the victors & the awarding of the Paxo to Stephen Merrell & Kim Coulson.

Thank you to all the members for your support and also your contribution to the charity raffle which together with the draw held at the Capt's dinner on Friday evening raised around £500 towards the John Le Vay centre at Ipswich Hospital.
Thanks also to staff front & back of house & green keepers for their hard work over the weekend.

Finally Maggie & I are over awed by the support you have given us in our year, our heart felt thanks to each & every one.

Breast Cancer Now Pink Day, 11th October, 2016

Congratulations are due to the 88 ladies and men who combined in this friendly – not to say frivolous - competition, which saw £744 raised for this excellent charity: £500 of which came from a generously –supported raffle.

If the golf competition wasn’t fierce enough, the majority entered into the fun by trying to become the “pinkest person” – with many of the men clearly (and worryingly) relishing this opportunity!

The success of the day rested on the teamwork provided by a range of people. However, particular thanks are due to Ladies’ Captain Maggie Porter for her considerable input into the organisation of the day, ably supported by Tom Edwards and Di Lewis; Colin Moore for producing various versions of the cards; Andy Pitcher for helping with the group selection, and Alan Porter for helping with the administration.  John Osborne kindly donated the nearest the pin prizes, and John Mealing did likewise for the nearest the line competition. Maggie and I are very grateful for all this help and support, particularly to the staff who helped to make this such a successful day.

The results were as follows;

Team results (best 2 Stableford scores on each hole)

1st:  Gary Kilworth, John Porter, Marian Rose, Bob Moffatt

2nd:  Colin Moore, Lawrence Irvine, Karen Lewis, Alan Norman

3rd :  Alan Middle, John Ager, Bev Versey, Alan Otterburn

Nearest the pin

Ladies: Maggie Porter on the 7th

Men: David Wilkes on the 4th

Nearest the line

Ladies: Jill London

Men: Paul Giles

Pinkest Lady: Jill Dale

Pinkest Man: Alan Porter (outfit selected by Maggie, no doubt!)

Again, sincere thanks for the generosity shown in support of this worthy cause.  I am sure all enjoyed what was a light-hearted and entertaining day,

This annual competition again supported by Val & Larry was to raise money in support of EACH & we thank them for this.
Competition was keen with some very good scores being recorded saw new members Paul Thresh & Scott Morling who joined the club this year victorious with a score of 46 points followed closely by Chrissie & Bob Moffett(45) & Helena McDougall/Chris Marjoram(44).

Congratulations to the winners & thank you to everyone who supported the competition with another good turn out.

Kestrel & Matchplay

Mens' Kestrel

Saturday saw 22 men take to the course to compete for the Kestrel Championship played over 18 holes stableford followed by 18 holes medal scoring.

Joint leaders at lunchtime on 38 points were Jason Cook & Taylor Crisp.

In the afternoon medal round Taylor continued where he left off by carding a nett 62 off his 14 h'cap thus giving him a a difference of 24 and the championship by 5 from Darren Ridgeon finishing on 29 closely followed by Stephen Brown on 30.
Thank you to those who stayed for the presentations after a long Day.

Ladies' Kestrel

19 Ladies competed for their Kestrel Trophy over 9 holes stableford & 9 holes medal & Yvonne Southey just back from holiday triumphed with a score of 9 (which included a hole in one on the 7th hole) from Jan Connett on 10 & Angela Shearing on 13.

Seckford Matchplay

Sunday saw the semi finals & final of the Seckford Match Play which is a scratch competition. Ray Connett & Clive Seward beat Mark Crisp & Sam Pollexfen respectively in the morning semi finals. The final proved to be a very tight affair with neither player getting too far ahead saw Clive 1 up after 16 holes but a birdie on the 17th by Ray(playing his 4th round in 2 days) meant the match was all square on the 18th tee. Both players drove well but a slight error by Clive opened the door for Ray who took the hole with a par & winning the Championship for the second time.

It was a great pleasure to follow this game & congratulations to both players on a very good game.
So another long weekend of competition golf was concluded by presenting the winner's Trophy to Ray Connett & to Clive Seward the runner up prize.

Seniors' Kestrel Competition

If evidence were needed that the responsibilities exercised by the two men captains hasn’t affected their golf, it was provided by the result of this competition!

Both John Mealing (Club Captain) and Terry Duffell  (Seniors’ Captain) finished with a score of 11, with John winning on countback.  John Robinson came third with a score of 13.

The Kestrel involved the 34 seniors who finished in the top positions in qualifying competitions, with the front nine holes using Stableford scoring and the back nine being scored on a Medal basis.  Once the Medal scores were adjusted for handicaps, the Stableford score was subtracted from the Medal score to produce the result.

Thanks are due to Bob Higham for the administration, and to John Mealing, Trevor Barber and Lawrence Irving for checking the scores.

Ladies Invitation 2016

25 Seckford Ladies and their 25 guests enjoyed a lovely day of golf and fun on Thursday 1st September at the Seckford Ladies Invitation Day.

The format for the day was 4 ball better ball, and after a  gloriously sunny round of golf  and a drink in the Bar, we enjoyed a delicious meal.

There were nearest the Pin prizes for either members or guests on all the Par 3 holes, prizes for nearest the line on the 17th  and also prizes for the 7 best pairs.  I think everyone would agree we had a thoroughly lovely day of golf and friendship and sunshine!  The photos are of the many winners on the day.

Thanks to all who helped make this a great day – in particular the greenkeepers and the kitchen and waiting staff and to Club Captain John for all his help on the day.

Congratulations are due to the team that defeated Playgolf (formerly Lexden Wood GC) recently, and secured this trophy for the first time since 2012.  The annual competition for the seniors’ sections at these clubs has been held since 1997.

The two-leg competition uses Hambro scoring, and Seckford seniors were losing by 12 holes after the first leg.  However, an excellent team performance in the return fixture (in which all our pairs drew or were victorious) saw us win by 19 holes, 7 overall.

Curry Cup 31st July

It was an early start for the team travelling to Benton Hall in Essex for the final group match with the home team insisting on an 08.15 tee off.

The morning foursomes saw Seckford hold a 4.5 to 1.5 advantage with only one game going the whole 18 hole distance.

In the afternoon singles it was a different story with the home team recharged and despite our best efforts only managed to win 4 of the 12 points on offer thus giving Benton Hall overall victory 9.5 to 8.5.

Men of the match were Ray Connett and Alan Middle who were unbeaten.

Having now completed our group matches with two wins and two defeats Seckford finished with 35 points.

Thank you to everyone who played during the group matches, especially young Taylor Crisp who for one so young played with maturity at all times even when under pressure from opponents.

Seniors' Invitation Day

We were delighted by the number of visitors from a range of local clubs who joined us for this event which saw 44 participants play in great spirit.

As is customary, handicaps were restricted to three-quarters, but despite this there were some exceptional scores: the competition was won by Brian Messenger and his guest John Keatley with a very impressive 47 Stableford points, followed closely in second place by Alan Middle and Tony Burrows, and placed third were Colin Pollexfen and Derek Norton from St Clement’s.  Steve Jewhurst and Roy Ross (Waldringfield) collected the prizes for nearest the pin and nearest the line respectively.  Well done to all for some excellent golf!

Owing to the exceptional generosity of the participants in donating prizes for the raffle, we raised £195 for our charity, an outstanding achievement, and I am very grateful for this level of support.

Considerable thanks are due to Colin Moore, John Osborne, Andy Pitcher and Joan Cook for their unstinting support on the day, and for the efforts of our excellent staff whose commitment and energy made the day so enjoyable.

Parks Trophy 2016

The above County Competition for Seniors with handicaps of 12 or below(or if not capped at a maximum of 12 which 7 of our team were) played Diss away in the Qtr Final on 21st July.

A tough match was expected not only being away but Diss had already been victorious over Rookery Park & Woodbridge in previous rounds.
Despite putting up fierce resistance a defeat by 10 holes on a very hot day was no disgrace having been only 2 holes down at the half way point..

Our top pair of Seniors Champion Alan Middle & Stuart Beney lost by 3 holes despite Alan only dropping 2 shots to the course with the opposition going round in one under plus receiving shots from Alan(welcome to the standard of seniors golf).

Russell Beney & Club Capt John Mealing started slowly losing the first 2 holes and held that score at the end
Mervyn Leach & Lawrence Irving lost by 5 holes, the match being closer than the score suggests with a number of holes just slipping away.

The solid pairing of Steve Jewhurst & David Whittaker again performed well with victory only being stolen from them on the last hole thus ending up all square.

A big thank you to all the Seckford team & in particular the caddies & supporters which once again showed the opposition up on support

Hambro Trophy

Hambro Trophy 17 July 2016.

Having reached the Qtr Finals for the first time regrettably Seckford lost by 20 holes at Woodbridge.

Due to holiday's, 3 changes had to be made from the team that played in the previous rounds, at lunchtime we were only 5 holes adrift.

With the temperature in the high 20's in the afternoon we found ourselves 15 holes down after 9 holes & with the team digging deep this remained the same score at the end of play thus giving our opponents overall victory.

Having never reached this stage of the Hambro before this was a creditable performance and we should take the positive's that with with earlier victories & the wins in the Mail on Sunday we've proved we can compete with bigger clubs & carry this confidence forward to 2017.

Back row:- John Mealing(Capt),Paul Flannigan,Sam Pollexfen,Ray Connett,Alan Middle,John Cunnell,Matt Ginn.

In the afternoon singles the team stayed strong winning 8 games & halving one which included a creditable 4 & 2 win by the old man of the team (club capt) thus producing a good result in very hot conditions.

My thanks to all the players for their efforts especially Darren Ridgeon whom we called on about 10 mins prior to commencement of play.

Greene King Salver

After the appalling weather on Saturday the green keepers still produced a course of high quality on Sunday morning for play to commence on time.

Despite persistent rain during the morning round the 22 members and 9 visitors went into battle and produced some commendable scores with Nathan Overton of Woodbridge dropping three shots playing off a handicap of 1.
The best nett score was recorded by Steven Brown with 64.

Everything improved in the afternoon with the sun shining and the scoring.

Taylor Crisp with a fantastic round of 58 nett on top of a steady morning round became the 2016 Greene King Salver winner followed by Sam Pollexfen and Craig Hancocks in 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

The scratch prize was won by Nathan Overton from Dominic Rosser (2nd)  and Ricky Dzrierozyski (3rd)  all from Woodbridge G.C.

Our thanks go to Greene King for their continued sponsorship of the event, Alan Middle for arranging the prizes, Bob Higham for collating the scores and Vice Capt Paul Ward for ensuring everyone teed off on time.

The match was interrupted by a passing thunderstorm with play being suspended with 11 holes still to be completed across the 4 matches and with Seckford 17 holes ahead it was mutually agreed the outstanding holes would be halved.

A special mention of debutants Ray Connett and Alan Middle(now qualifying due to age) both performed soundly and also the pairing of David Whittaker/Steve Jewhurst who were 7 holes ahead at suspension of play.

As the klazon sounded at 9.30am play commenced in fine weather with a team game of a best 2 from 4 stableford scoring competition, putting comp designed by Alan Porter, beat the pro on 11th & the Capt's challenge on the 16th with only 23 members beating us despite the best efforts of some to put us off but to no avail.

The 16th also had a welcome pit stop for everyone to enjoy with cakes etc kindly provided by the President & Amanda & we are grateful to them for this.

After play the club donated a hot buffet lunch for all & this was most welcome & it was lovely to be joined by other friends for a drink.

The winners prizes were presented which were all donated by generous sponsors from other clubs, Greene King & Barclays Bank to name a few.

Congratulations to all the winners of the various competitions.

We would also thank those numerous members who gave of their time tho' not playing in helping to ensure the smooth running of the day plus the catering staff for keeping us well fed & watered & the green keepers for their work on the course.

The Capt's hope everyone enjoyed their day in helping us to raise in the region of £1400 for the John Le Vay Cancer Support & Information Centre.

Top pair for Seckford was Ray Connett/Alan Middle who won 16 holes on the day but the whole team played their part.
The Tolly match away to Stowmarket had us 5 holes ahead at lunchtime but despite their best efforts lost by 8 holes overall.
In the next round of the Hambro we are at home to Waldringfield on 19th June.

Thank you to the teams for playing & to those who supported both teams on the day, especially Paul Ward(vice capt) for looking after the Tolly team.

Curry Cup 14th May

A disappointing result away to Fynn Valley losing 13.5 to 4.5.

After losing 4 games & halving 2 games in the morning foursomes the afternoon singles were just as difficult winning only 3.5 pts of the 12 available.

Well done to the whole team for their efforts on the day & again mention of 13 year old Taylor Crisp who won his singles 5 & 4. An impressive display from this young man & even the opposition commented of their respect for his performance.

On a lighter note when you think you've seen everything in golf in the foursomes Ian Bedford/Clive Seward won the 13th hole with a 10.

Club Captain

Hollow Coring

A massive thank you to all the seniors who helped with the hollow coring today. We couldn't do it without you!!

Mail on Sunday Competitions

Sadly both the Men & Ladies lost their Mail on Sunday Foursomes yesterday.

Tony & Mark lost at home 3 & 2 to Fynn Valley having fought back from being 2 down after 6 holes to get it back to 1 after 13 holes. Then a defining moment on 14 with Seckford on the green & Fynn in the trees to the right of the green they then preceded to chip out into the hole for a birdie & won the hole & followed up winning the 15th & halving 16 to finish the match.

Joan & Bev took on Ufford away in terrible weather but played some good golf & were all square after 16 but sadly lost the last 2 holes to finish 2 down.

Maggie & I would like to thank all four players for their efforts in this competition.

Seckford Quaich 2014

On Sunday 14th December the Seckford members team beat the staff and officers team by five holes, winning five out of the eight matches in the annual Seckford Quaich competition. The Seckford Quaich is a team match between the members and staff & officers past and present. It is a 4 ball better ball matchplay competition, hambro scoring and played off 3/4 handicap.

There were some big wins with three matches being won by 9 holes, two of which were in favour of the staff and officers team!

The match was looking like a complete walkover, with one match to come in the members team were 14 holes ahead! Then the pairing of John Mealing and Helena McDougall finished their match 9up to save the staff and officers team too much embarrassment.

The Staff & Officers team won last year so this was clearly a determined Members team looking for sweet revenge!

The winners enjoyed a traditional sip of whisky from the Quaich to celebrate their victory.

The Cear Trophy

The CEAR Trophy 2014

Winners from left: Terry Draycott & John Mealing

Seckford staged its annual CEAR Trophy game on Saturday 18th October 2014 which is sponsored by Val Voltz and Larry Ishelwood, with all profits going to the East Anglia Children’s Hospices (EACH).  The game was a better ball pairs contest, played off three quarters handicap over 18 holes, Stableford scoring.  After a variable week for weather, the day proved to have pleasant but “gusty” weather and a big thank you must go to all of the green keepers and staff who managed to get the course into good order for the event.

Val and Larry have supported this charity for a number of years and they are thanked for their organisation of the event.  Once again the event proved popular with the members with 52 participants taking part.

The scoring on the day proved to be varied but additional prizes were awarded for closest the pin on the 4th hole and nearest the red line on the 17th hole.  The result was a close run affair with the last minute entry of John Mealing and Terry Draycott (both senior members) taking the honours with a score of 43 points.  Second and third places were decided on “count back” with Helena McDougall and Chris Majoram gaining second place over Russell Beney and Ray Connett, both teams scoring 42 points.

Pink and Blue Day 2014

Ladies and Seniors

Pink and Blue Charity Day 2014

Seckford is well known for its efforts on the support to local charities through its playing and social events.  One of the largest playing events is the annual “pink and blue day” played in aid of the local cancer charity organisations.  This year was once more well supported, and the event was played by combined teams of the Ladies and Senior men.  The event was held on Tuesday, 14th October 2014, and each team contained at least one lady, and 21 teams (84 players) took part.  The  main event was a best two from four team competition, Stableford scoring over 18 holes, with additional prizes for nearest the pins and closest the line drives, and prizes were given to the best dressed man and lady, dressed in pink.

The winners of the main competition were the team of Keith Johnson, John Williams, Yvonne Southey and Marcia Thorpe with and impressive score of 92 points.

As is normal in these occasions the members donated a number of prizes for a raffle that helped in increasing the profits for the charity.   Additionally, the Lady Captain, Helena McDougall had been to the Ryder Cup and donated a framed, limited edition commemorative five pounds note of the event, which was auctioned on the day.

The previous day had seen approximately 40mm of rainfall on the course and concerns were held if the event could take place and what state the course would be in.  These proved to be unfounded as the weather on the day was bright and sunny and the excellent work by the green keepers put the course in good order, and we offer our thanks to them for all their hard work.

The event was organised by Helena McDougall (ladies captain) and Terry Draycott (senior men captain) who wish to offer their thanks to all the club personnel for the help and support on the day, and in particular to all of the people taking part and supporting the event.

The event raised a profit of £810 on the day that was presented later in the day, by the captains, to Rebecca Cox (Assistant Manager of Cancer Research UK) - see photo below.

Thank you to all who supported the day and we hope you enjoyed the event.

Battle of the Sexes 2014

Battle of the Sexes 2014

Photo: The winning ladies team, with Val Volz and Ged Moreton

The annual “Battle of the Sexes” match at Seckford took place on Sunday, 5th October 2014.  This is a four ball, better ball match play competition between the ladies and men, using Hambro scoring.  This year’s entry had a reduced number of players and for the first time in memory there were more ladies than men.  In previous years, men have been drawn to play in the ladies team and often they have dressed for the occasion as “ladies”.  This year saw the opposite taking place with two ladies (Val Volz and Ged Moreton) playing for the men in order to balance the numbers.  A big thank you to these ladies in particular and to all other players for taking part.

This year saw the lowest entry for as long as I can remember with only twenty-four people taking part, and hopefully more with take part in the future.  The match was played in good spirits but with the usual competitive edge to each game.  This year saw the LADIES winning five of the six games, thus winning the match by six holes to two.

Well done to the ladies!

Beney Trophy 2014

The Beney Trophy 2014

The Beney Trophy Winners from left: Warner Duff, Alan Middle, Helena McDougall, Russell Beney, Stuart Beney, Paul Rose

This year saw a group of nineteen Seckford club members and partners enjoying a combination of a holiday abroad together with a golf contest for the Beney Trophy.  This has been an annual event for a number of years, which is played in a mixed format based on the Ryder cup, by two teams normally led by the men’s captain and men’s vice captain.   This year saw a slight change whereby the teams were led by the men’s captain (Russell Beney) and the senior men’s captain (Terry Draycott).  This trophy was originally a “men only” event but has included the ladies for the past few years.

This has proved to be a popular event, over several years, and was arranged by Adrian Gipson on behalf of the membership.  The previous matches have taken place in Wales, Ireland, Tenerife, Turkey and the Algarve.  This year saw the players return to the village of Alvor in the Algarve (last visited in 2011) to enjoy the fun and the golf again.  The location, courses, hotel and organisation were of the highest order and Adrian really “did us proud”.

This year saw the late withdrawal of several players due to illness that left twelve playing tourists in the “sunny and hot” conditions around Alvor.  This year’s competition was based on three matches of four ball, better ball match play and six singles matches on the last day.  Needless to say that besides the fun of the golf, the normal holiday spirit was grabbed by all and fun was had in the bar and restaurants in the evenings.  It is true to say that golf is much more enjoyable when played with “the sun on your back”, however the effects of fun in the town and drinks can also affect your performance.

John Mealing's Birthday

Friday 3rd October 2014

Over 50 Seniors & 5 Ladies celebrated John Mealing's 65th birthday on a lovely sunny October morning playing in teams of four with the best 2 scores on each hole to count.
Tea & Coffee with biscuits was provided for all to enjoy prior to play and team & nearest the pin prizes were up for grabs.

The entry fee was £3.00 but such was everyone's genorosity most donated £5.00 which was donated to M.S.Charity.
Our guest at lunchtime was Louise Rickard who has been trying to raise £10,000 this year for this Charity and with our donation has reached £7,500approx which includes her own efforts of a golf day at Seckford in April and a mammoth 1500mile cycle ride from Gibralter to Bucks in June and was very appreciatve of our contribution of over £300.

On a personal note can I thank everyone who played and stayed on for the presentations of prizes by Louise and those who carried out the admin on the day to ensure the smooth running of the event.
Finally a big thank you to the club for their help, the chefs for giving a discounted menu which encouraged a lot of people to use and enjoy and lastly to Aaron and Becky for keeping us well fuelled!

Seniors Kestrel 2014

Seniors Kestrel Trophy

L to R : John Mealing (runner-up), Terry Draycott (Senior Captain) and Nick Lee (Kestrel winner)

The senior men held their Kestrel Trophy on Friday, 29th August 2014, which was played over 18 holes (9 medal and 9 stableford scoring).  The event was well supported with 44 players starting on what proved to be a good day for golf.  The event was won by Nick Lee with an impressive score of 7 points (par being 14 points) to take this years prize.  John Mealing was once again runner-up with a score of 10 points.

The day proved to be memorable for John as he scored a “hole in one” on the 135 yard, 14th hole, using a 6 iron.  His playing partners Norman Wood and Keith Johnson witnessed the event.

Well done to all who took part.

Seniors Invitation Day 2014

Seniors Invitation Day

The Men’s Senior section held its invitation day at Seckford on Wednesday, 6th August 2014.  The event attracted 54 players, playing a 4 ball better ball Stableford competition off ¾ handicaps.  Unfortunately, shortly after the start of the event there was a period of heavy rain that spoilt the event for the early starters.  This resulted in 9 pairs retiring from the competition early, recording nil returns.  At one stage the tee times were delayed to allow the weather to improve for the remaining players.

The event was organised by Trevor Barber on behalf of the section and he should be thanked for his efforts.  In spite of the weather the club received good praise from all who took part.

In addition to the best pairs scoring there were prizes for nearest the pins and longest drive. The results were:

Nearest the pin 4th hole:                                      John Goodship

Nearest the pin 13th hole:                                    No one

Nearest the pin in 2 shots on 9th hole:                  Trevor Cole

Longest Drive 17th hole:                                       Phil Vinnicombe

The better ball placing was;

1st               Phil Fry and Trevor Cole                 (40 pts)

2nd              Steve Jewhurst and Dave Wilson     (39 pts)

3rd               Trevor Barber and Roger Wilkins     (38 pts)

Well done to all who took part.

Terry Draycott (Senior Capt. 2014)

Nearest the Pin for the Men was won by former Seckford Club Secretary Graham Cook on the 13th hole.

Ladies Nearest the Pin was won by 2014 Ladies Club Champion Jan Connett on the 7th hole.

Nearest the Pin 2nd Shot was won by Graham Cook and Simon Jay.

68 players entered the popular greensomes competition, sponsored by Mrs Josephine Benjaman.

The competition raised £272 towards running Seckford Golf Club's Hambro and Tolly teams.

Thank you to everyone who took part.

Hambro Team

On Sunday 20th July, the Seckford Hambro Team played away at Brett Vale in the quarter finals of the Hambro competition.  Unfortunately the Seckford Team lost by 10 holes on the day but all players put up a spirited performance and should all be proud of their efforts this year.  Fingers crossed for another successful run in the competition in 2015.

Defibrillator - 08/05/2014

From left: Sheila Nunn, Sara Higgins, Simon Jay

In my Lady Captains year in 2011 I decided that instead of supporting a designated charity that I would use any monies that we raised to benefit Seckford GC for the members' and visitors' benefit. Having hosted various charity days in 2011 with the club and members support I thought it would be a great idea to put back into the club something of an on going value. It came to my attention that we could apply for a defibrillator through the BHF and after looking into this with the help of our local BHF we granted our funding towards a defibrillator earlier this year. This is a big thank you to all the members for digging so deep in my Captains year and gaining such an important life saving piece of equipment.

Sara Higgins – Ladies Captain 2011

The Ipswich and district branch of BHF were delighted to help raise money towards funding a defibrillator for the Seckford golf club. We held a quiz night at the club and raised over £600.00

On a personal side I can never thank BHF enough for the tests I was given, all funded by the foundation when pregnant with our 4th son  having lost the previous baby with a heart defect . I was once told that the most precious thing you can give is your time and feel that a few hours per year is within my capacity. We are a small committee of 5 and desperate for some new members so if anyone feel they would like to help please either call our chairman Colin Palmer on 01394 382175 or myself 01473 231004 and we'd be pleased to hear from you.

Beaumont Trophy 23/04/2014

In a tough first round match at home Seckford overcame a very formidable Haverhill side by 9 holes.

The score doesn't reflect the coseness of the match. Seckford were only three holes ahead after 10 holes and only four through 15. During the last three holes of play the team reeled off a further 5 holes to win by 9 overall.

Seckford now await the outcome of the Diss and Southwold match to find out where they will travel to for the next round having been drawn away.

John Arnot & John Williams - Halved

Steve Jewhurst & John Robinson - 4up

Phil Vinnicombe & Ken Farrow - 1up

Nigel Pusey & Lawrence Irving - 4up

Thank you to the caddies who assisted the team on the day and to the supporters who gave up their time to support the team.

Easter Adult/Junior - 21/04/2014

Adult/Junior Competition
On Easter Monday an adult/junior competition was held and well supported with 18 people playing.  The format of the 9 hole competition was greensomes which gave the junior members opportunity to play an alternate shot format which everybody enjoyed.  Congratulations to Mark Crisp and Taylor Crisp who won the competition with a fantastic score of 38 (gross) for 9 holes.
My thanks go to the members who volunteered to partner those junior members who needed an adult player, as well as everybody else who supported the event.  I hope that this will be the start of a happy and successful year for the junior section at Seckford with more events to come in the future.

Matthew Farthing - 04/04/2014

Something a little different!

Our very own junior member, Matthew Farthing reached the quarter final of the BBC Young Musician 2014. Although he didn't reach the semi final this is an incredible achievement in an extremely competitive industry which is notoriously difficult to succeed in. You can watch Matthew's performance on BBC Four on Thursday 25th April.

His achievements don't stop there, last weekend he won the National Tuned Percussion Competition at The Guildhall in London, which he also won two years ago. The prizes are amazing - a day in the pit at The Royal Opera House and a solo at The Royal Albert Hall at The Music for Youth event! He has also won a cash prize and an orchestral cymbal. He will also feature on Radio Suffolk live where he will be playing on Drivetime later today!

This afternoon he will be busy attending a master class in London and on Sunday he is off to the Easter National Youth Orchestra course for two weeks.

We wish Matthew all the best for what looks to be a very bright future!

The Seniors recently held their first winter golf and lunch and was attended by Suffolk Golf Union President Ron Kent who kindly brought the Beaumont Trophy with him for the club to see.

Club Captain Alan Middle also came along and joined in the golf on what was a celebration of the Beaumont teams achievement. After lunch both Ron and Alan were very complimentary of the Seniors at Seckford and the President then presented Mervyn Leach with a winners tankard having only missed the Final due to holidays.

Finally a massive thank you to Seniors Captain Tony Mahoney who provided the wine specially labeled for the event on every table.

Press Release.....

David Nigel Whitehead and Andrew Anderson Kelsall of Larking Gowen, chartered accountants and business advisors, have been appointed as Joint Administrators of Golf GB Limited, trading as Seckford Golf Club, on 11 October 2013.

Andrew Kelsall commented, “Seckford Golf Club continues to trade and members and those with functions booked will not notice any difference. It is very much business as usual, with a full range of facilities and staff covering both the course and the restaurant.”

The company that operated the club has historic debt and, in spite of recent efficiency savings, has been unable to service effectively.

The Administration provides a structure for the club to continue to trade, whilst looking to restructure or achieve the sale of the club.

The club currently has 540 members and 17 employees.

Interested parties can contact Richard Bloomfield of Larking Gowen on 0845 450 2466 or by email at

Larking Gowen is registered to carry out audit work in the UK and Ireland by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.  Regulated for a range of investment business activities by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.  A member of MHA.

Hole in One

Club President Colin Harrison today achieved his second hole in one in the space of just 25 days! He tee'd off on the 11th hole with a 9 iron in terrible conditions and watched, along with playing partners John Mealing, Norman Wood and John Roche, as the ball found the bottom of the cup.

His first hole in one came on 17th September on the 14th hole with a 7 iron. This was his first one in the 20 years he's been playing and was witnessed by Rod Evason and Clive Lenney.

Well done Colin! Drinks are on you!

Hole in One

He has been playing with the Seckford Seniors since June 2008 and his handicap has been creeping down bit by bit ever since.

After the passing of his 60th birthday recently his luck seemed to change with a vengeance. It started on July 2nd when he got his first ever hole in one on the 7th hole at Seckford. His playing partner was Dereck Rothwell.

On the 12th July it was the Seniors Club Championships. Alan shot 84 which with his handicap gave him a nett 59! He won the nett competition by 2 shots and even came 5th in the gross competition.

On the 3rd September a trio of Alan, Frank Casey and John Finch stood on the 16th tee. They were playing a "driver plus" format where the best tee shot is taken by all three players. Alan had one tee shot left to play. He hit his 9 iron (his already experienced hole in one club), the ball hit the green, bounced, clouted the flag stick and popped into the hole!

What next?...

Beaumont Trophy

Back row from left: John Robinson, Phil Vinnicombe, Steve Jewhurst, John Mealing, Ray Beaumont, Nigel Pusey

Front row from left: Steve Bonner, John Williams, John Arnot, Nick Lee

On a warm sunny afternoon on 12th September Seckford Seniors took on Bury St Edmunds Seniors At Ipswich G.C. in a bid to win a County Cup for the first time in Seckford's history in the final of the Beaumont Trophy.

Nerves were abundant on the the first tee as both teams struggled to find the fairway. Seckford settled quickly and established a lead of eight holes at the halfway mark.
Seckford continued to play solid golf on the back nine with John  Williams & John Arnot, 3 up after nine, went to the last tee all square and won the last hole to finish 1up.

Steve Jewhurst & Steve Bonner (replacing the holidaying Merv Leach) were 3 up after nine and proceeded to double this by the last hole to win by 6 holes.

Phil Vinnicombe & Ken Farrow, who played solid golf all afternoon being 2 up after nine, continued this to finish 3 up after eighteen.

Nick Lee & Nigel Pusey used their shots received wisely and were all square after nine but were 3 down on the back. They pulled it back to all square by the 18th and after a gentlemanly half on the last victory was Seckfords by 10 holes.

Who would have dreamt way back in April at Bramford in appalling weather conditions that this historical moment in winning the Beaumont Trophy would come true.

Thank you to to the whole squad which, John Robinson was also part off, for the hours of practice at the courses we've played at, the dedication, determination & resolve shown in achieving this memorable victory.
Thanks to the caddies who supported the players in the final and also all the club members who came to support the team and witness this wonderful occasion.

Curry Cup 2013

Well everyone, its all over for another year.  We played the semi final of the Curry Cup on Sunday 8th September at Haverhill and lost to Fynn Valley by 12-6.

Thank you all as players and supporters for all your efforts and help throughout the year.  An additional thank you to Adrian Gipson and Ian Bedford who carried the load of selecting the sides with me this year and to Warner Duff who as always supported me whenever needed.  The representative sides played well in the Hambro, Tolly and Curry Cup and I hope you enjoyed being part of that squad. The club has gone from strength to strength on the playing sides in the last few years and I hope that continues.  However, winning semi finals seems to elude us.  This year we used 19 different players in the 5 matches of the Curry Cup which shows the strength we now have in the playing squad and club.

Yesterday's result may seem a little one sided when looking at the 12-6 score but 2 of the foursomes games in the morning were lost by 1 on the last hole.  In the afternoon, 2 of the singles matches were all square and a further 4 were lost by 1 on the last hole, so the game was very close until the last holes.

A further thank you and well done to the semi final players (especially the two late replacements) who did us all proud.  Further thanks to Anja, Gippy and Rick who came to Haverhill to caddy and support.

Beaumont Trophy

On Wednesday 14th August our seniors overcame a strong Thorpeness team by 10 holes in the Beaumont Trophy semi-final at Halesworth.

John Williams and John Robinson took on the strongest Thorpeness pairing and having been 3 holes down early on they hung in, but eventually by 2 holes.

Mervyn Leach and Steve Jewhurst won by an incredible 9 holes! They parred 15 holes and at one stage won 6 holes on the trot.

Phil Vinnicombe and Ken Farrow finished with a half but were never behind in their match.

The final pairing of Nigel Pusey and Nick Lee were their usual selves grinding out a solid result by winning 2 of the last 3 holes to finish 3 up.

Overall it was a great result with every member of the team playing their part. We now await the outcome of the Bury vs Halesworth match to see who we face in the final.

Thanks to all the whole Beaumont squad for their hard work and commitment. Also many thanks to those who came along to support the team.

Curry Cup

On the 4th August, the Seckford men beat Stowmarket, at Seckford, by 13.5 to 4.5 in the Curry Cup match. This was the last of our league matches for this year and means we have now reached the semi finals of the competition.  My congratulations to all the players and the team squad for this success and further thanks for their support and the support from the other club members who have attended the matches.  This year we have shown how well our squad system and preparation has worked, not only in this competition but also with the Hambro and Tolly teams.

We now know that we will be playing our semi final match at Haverhill GC on the Sunday 8th September, but the opponents are not decided yet as teams in the other leagues play their final matches this coming weekend.  In addition to this, Seckford has been chosen to host the second semi final on that day.

I hope that we progress further in this and please come along and support the team if you can.

Millenium Globe

Congratulations to Tony Carter for winning the Millenium Globe on Saturday 3rd August in perfect conditions. Tony scored 42 points playing off a handicap of 15 and won on count-back over William Worthington who, playing off 16, also scored 42 points. Tony has now been cut to 13 and William to 14 for their efforts.

The Millenium Globe is an annual event sponsored by Mick Cook and is always very well supported with over 70 players entering.

Other scores were Rose Smith and Lou Reynolds both scoring a superb 40 points with Rose taking 3rd place over Lou after count-back.

The excellent scoring on the day reflected the conditions with three players tying for 5th place with 39 points and four players tied with 38 points.

For the full table of results please take a look at the notice board in the clubhouse or check out Howdidido.

A big thank you to all who took part and to Mick Cook for sponsoring the event. Also thank you to club captain Alan Middle for running registration and giving prizes out on the day.

The course was in excellent condition considering the very dry weather of late with the greens playing particularly well.

Well done and thank you to everyone who took part and we look forward to seeing you all next year!

Smoking Ban on Course

Due to the extremely dry conditions there is a smoking ban in place whilst on the golf course.

Please refrain from smoking anywhere on the golf course until further notice.

Thank you.

Beaumont Success For Seckford Seniors

On Wednesday 10th July the Seckford Seniors overcame Fynn Valley away after a sudden death playoff at the second extra hole.

John Williams and John Arnot suffered their first defeat in this competition by 1 hole as did Mervyn Leach and Steve Jewhurst by 2 holes. The third pair of Ken Farrow and Steve Bonner were three down after 17 but Steve putted out to win the last hole, which meant at this stage with three matches completed we were 5 holes down overall and staring defeat in the face. The final pair of Nigel Pusey and Nick Lee were 4 up after 17 and with a win on the last hole it meant a sudden death playoff would decide the match. Nigel and Nick went back to the first tee against R. Deex and S. Holden and the hole was halved in 5.
The second hole, a par three, saw Nick in a greenside bunker and Nigel hitting a perfect shot onto the green. Niether of the Fynn Valley pair made the green and ended up making a best score of 4. Nick putted out for a 4 to secure at least a half, but Nigel cooly two putted for a par 3 to win the match and give us a very hard fought victory and a place in the semi-finals.

After being 6 holes up overall after 9 holes and suddenly finding themselves 1 down overall after 12 the whole team are to be congratulated for showing grit and determination in gaining this victory.

My thanks to the caddies and to the supporters in turning up to support the team.

Greene King Salver Winner

Seckford Junior Luke Wins Greene King Salver

From left: Nathan Overton, Luke Middleton, Alan Middle (Club Captain)

Well done to our very own Luke Middleton for winning the first Seckford Golf Club Greene King Salver on Sunday 30th June with a nett score of 120 over the two rounds. Luke, playing off a handicap of 14 on the day has been sliced to 12 for his efforts (and rightly so!). Nathan Overton of Woodbridge Golf Club, playing off a handicap of scratch, won the gross prize with rounds of 68 and 65. The competition was played in sweltering conditions and both players were complimentary of the course which didn't give too many shots away on the day. Congratulations to the winners and we hope for another successful day next year.

Aches and Pains.......

Aches and Pains Worth It For A Good Cause!

Well done to Pete Last, Sara Higgins, Dennis Higgins, Adrian Gipson Ian Bedford, Alan Middle, Ray Connett and Mark Edgerley for completing 72 holes in one day and raising more than £2000 for Macmillan Cancer Support! Also thank you to Terry Draycott, Warner Duff, Debbie Duff and various caddies thoughout the day for their support.

Beaumont Trophy

The Seniors overcame a good Beccles team at home by 12 holes last monday
to qualify for the qtr finals where they face a tough away match at Fynn Valley.
The match against Beccles was played in good spirit with all four pairs playing well.
Special mention to the pairing of John Robinson/Steve Bonner who won their match
by two holes in their first match in county golf.
Thanks to the team for their efforts and the members who turned out to support them.

Parks Trophy
On Thursday 13th June the Senior mens team lost by one hole to Felixstowe in the Parks trophy competition. The team were playing on reduced handicaps of a maximum of 12 each, which resulted in Seckford effectively starting with a disadvantage of 21 in handicaps, but this did not hamper the performance. The team played well throughout which resulted in a narrow win to Felixstowe in a match which was played in good spirits and friendship. One notable point was when Brian Kemp (Felixstowe Captain) recorded his first ever "hole in one" on the par 3 , 14th hole, which one the hole.
My thanks go to all the seniors and other club members who came and supported and to the players and caddies for their support and efforts. It was a privalege to be allowed to captain the side (non playing) on the day and well done to John and Trevor for their organisation.

Seckford team: M.Peat, R.Beney, T.Barber, J.Mealing, C.Harrison, L.Irving, D.Whittaker, A.Pitcher.

Curry Cup Result
Curry Cup Result ...honours even at Three Rivers

On Saturday 15th June the Seckford men played their third league match in the Curry Cup competition away against Three Rivers. The day proved to have strong winds in the morning for the foursomes and heavy rain in the afternoon for the singles but that did not detract from the quality of golf played. The match result was a draw (9 points each), which I believe is a good result away from home. I would like to thank Three Rivers and their players for an enjoyable day of golf and their good hospitality. Additionally, our players represented the club admirably and I thank them for their support and efforts.
Our last league match will be on the 4th August, at home, against Stowmarket. At the moment we have scored 31.5 points from three games (max available 48) which puts us in a good position to move forward to the semi finals. This is proving to be our best year in the competition so far.
Once more, thank you to all of the players and supporters.

The team won the match by 14 to 4 which gives them a good placing in the league after 2 games. I would like to thank not only the players of the day and supporters but also the rest of the team squad for making this one of our strongest sides. South Essex were complimentary to the team, the course and all of the staff at Seckford for providing them with a good days golf. I would like to add our team thanks as well to all who made it such a successful day.

If you enter a competition you must be available to play at any time on each of the respective days. The time slots shown on the draw entry are NOT necessarily the tee times on the day.
