Golf News - Juniors

Well winter approaches and, as we come to the end of the main golfing season, now is probably a good time to look back on what has been happening during the summer.

At the Junior AGM in May 2014 Harry Burman took over from Melissa Schroeder as Junior Captain for the 2014/2015 season. At the same time Daniel Jennings also became the Junior vice Captain. Melissa, together with rest of the AGM, wished both Harry and Daniel their very best wishes for the coming year.

The AGM was chaired by the Club’s Junior Organiser, Mrs Carol Perks, who was also The PRESIDENT of the Golf Club. The meeting was well attended by a good number of very smartly dressed junior members. The meeting concluded with the presentation of Trophies and Awards by the Club Captain, Mr Les Howard. Harry’s Drive in was followed by the annual match between the Juniors and a team representing the Club Captain. Well done to Harry and Daniel, together with Jack and James Tierney, Jordan Bloomfield, Jake Wessels, Charlie Woodage and Chloe Bennett for holding the Captain’s Team to an honourable 2-2 Draw. Thanks goes to Les Howard for providing refreshments after the match.

County Junior Team Competitions: Once again Rushmere can be very proud of the fact that the Juniors reach another final of a County Competition. That now makes it three finals in the last five years – a wonderful achievement by our current crop of talented golfers. This time we made the final of Suffolk Junior Team Championship. To get there, The Juniors first beat Diss at home before going to Gorlleston and winning there in the Quarter Final. They followed this by beating Felixstowe in the Semi-Final played at Ipswich GC. The final was played only one week later at Ufford Park, where they were very narrowly beaten 91-94 by Ipswich GC. Carol and Stephen wish to thank Simon Burnham and Mike Ager for taking charge of the Junior Team at both the Semi-Final and the Final itself.

The Juniors also equipped themselves well in the Suffolk Junior Team Handicap Cup where the beat good Newton Green team 3 ½ - 2 ½ before losing 1-5 to the eventual winners, Ipswich GC. The score line does not tell the whole story of what was, on a match by match basis a relatively tight match. However, special mention must go to Daniel Casseldon who, playing in the last match managed to gain our only point, playing off 24, in another tight match. Well done Daniel.

In The British Legion Poppy Competition the Juniors were drawn away for the third consecutive season. Following two 50 mile journeys to Saffron Waldon in the last couple of years, this year we had a 100 mile journey to Peterborough Milton GC !

Thanks again to Simon Burman for his assistance with this fixture. The 200 mile round journey was well worth it when a team of Harry, Jordan Bloomfield, Jordan Godbold and Eddie Griffiths earned a hard earned victory by 6 Holes on a wonderful golf course. Unfortunately the next round clashed with the Final of The Junior Team Championship, and we were forced to concede the fixture. So, better luck for next year.

Congratulations and thanks you to all the juniors who represented Rushmere this year in any of our Competition or Friendly match – you did the club proud. Hopefully, we can go one better next year and win another trophy.

Rushmere Junior Open: this Suffolk order of Merit Competition took place on 1st August. Whilst the entry numbers were down on previous years, a high quality field played excellent golf and provide a very close and exciting competition for The George Summers Trophy. The trophy eventually went to Monty Scowsill from Woodbridge on count back from Sam Byford (Fynn Valley) with a gross score of 71. Third was Jack Philips (Fynn Valley) on 72, closely followed in 4th place by our own Jordan Bloomfield on 73. and Mellissa Schroeder in a commendable 6th place.

The Stableford Competition for golfers with handicaps over 12 was won by Molly Newson (a Rushmere member) with Chloe Bennett 3rd, Daniel Casseldon 6th and Charlie Woodage 7th.

County Competitions and Junior Opens: At other events, Melissa won the Gross Competitions at Ufford and Haverhill (tied), whilst Charlie Woodage won the Stablefords at both Ufford and Felixstowe and finished 3rd at Haverhill.

Molly Newson won the Baker Plate at Newton Green and, together with Charlie, was in the prizes at Haverhill.
In The Suffolk Schools Finals: Daniel Jennings was the Nett Div 1 runner up, and Charlie was winner of the Girls Stableford with 39 pts

In the Suffolk Ladies/Junior Competition held at Rushmere, Chloe Bennett and the venerable Carol Perks were 3rd on count back from Melissa Schroeder and Denise Martin (our then Ladies Captain) who were 4th overall.

Mellissa (Captain), Charlotte (sorry, Charlie), and Molly Newson were all in the team at Suffolk County Junior Girls week.

At the time of ‘going to press’ Jordan Bloomfield was 2nd in the Suffolk Order of Merit with only the Newton Green competition to be played – well done Jordan. Also very well done for reaching the Semi Final of the Suffolk Junior Match Play Championships – losing to the eventual winner.

Well done to everyone who took part in County Competitions – for more detailed results, please see the Junior notice board

County Gents Team Competitions: Daniel Jenning was chosen to represent the club in the Hambro competition and formed a winning partnership with Ross Howard – great work Daniel you have done to Junior section proud

Golf Mark: Rushmere has successfully completed the Golf Mark review – much thanks to Bob Tawell for his efforts in this respect. The Junior section now needs a push to recruit more members for the coming years. Hopefully this can be achieved with help from Golf Mark and Kelvin – watch this space.

Suffolk Junior Foursomes: - Due to be played at RUSHMERE on Fri 31 October 2014. Harry Burman and Jordan Bloomfield won this at Felixstowe 2 years ago. Can a Rushmere pair do so again on your home course? Fingers Crossed.

Finally – do not forget to watch the Junior notice board for future fixture and competitions over Christmas and the winter period.
