Stephen Drives In as Rushmere Captain

Stephen Auld took up the game of golf 17 years ago and this weekend 18th March 2011 saw Stephen Drive In as Rushmere Golf Clubs Captain. He was fortunate to have the best weather so far this year and the sunshine certainly bought the best out of him as he smashed his second ball 187 yards down the fairway, (we won't mention the first, but somewhere in Australia)! Stephen has worked for Ipswich Borough Council since 1974, where he started as a Graduate Engineer and finished in 2007 as Head of Transport and Engineering. Stephen is married to Audrey and have one daughter Helen. It is probably the first left hander geodie we have had as a Club Captain. His favorite football teams are Everton and Newcastle. Stephens Vice Captain will be ex Ipswich player (another gerdie) John Peddelty. The Rushmere Members turned out in force to give Stephen a bit of banter on the first tee.

Greta Turnout for new Lady Captain

– LADIES SECTION -

The Annual General Meeting of the Rushmere Ladies section was held on Wednesday the 21st October 2009 with the Club President Mr Terry Mills in the chair, also in attendance the General Manager Mr. Bob Tawell, and the Seniors Captain
Mr Brian Perks and 42 Lady members.

The out going Lady Captain Mrs Carol Perks presented Nicola Whymark from the East Anglian Air Ambulance with a cheque for £3414. 23, this fabulous amount for which Nicola was very grateful had been raised through out the year by holding Beach Hut parties, Barbeques, Cream Teas, making cakes, selling plants, raffles, talks and playing golf I guess as everybody going into the Charity Bunkers contributed.
A minute silence was held in remembrance of Lady members who had passed away, Gladys Shemeld, Margaret Roberts and Pammy Glue.
Carol then presented flowers for 4 Special Birthdays to Margaret Freeman, Alison Hemming, June Kenworthy and Margaret Scales, and then continued with her Captain’s Report saying where has the year gone? It has been busy, interesting, challenging and hopefully an enjoyable year, helped by glorious weather except for a few weeks early in the year.
All Competitions were completed, social mixed games and mixed cup competitions were all well supported, as were the friendly matches v Juniors, Vets and Mixed Matches.
We lost the Haskell on the 36th hole to Gorleston at Gorleston, once again we made the Final of the Stearn Competition but lost to Fynn Valley at Ipswich, many thanks to all the Caddies and supporters and to the working girls for taking time off work to play in all the Competitions.
Thanks to Kelvin Vince for his coaching sessions.
Congratulations to Valerie Mallett for being County Vets Captain last year and County Vets President this year.
Our Special days were blessed with good weather, well organised by members of the Committee and well supported.
My Lady Captains day was most enjoyable, so nice to see everybody especially the ladies that no longer play. We had an away day at Seckford and an away week-end at
Sprowston Manor, which were both excellent, and a chance for the Sunday and Wednesday ladies to get together.
Holes in one were achieved by Maureen Farmer on the 14th at Rushmere and by Irma Suttle on the 15th at Ipwich in the final of the Stearn.
Carol thanked her Committee for all their hard work throughout the year, and
also thanked all the members who had supported and contributed to her charity.
On handing over to the New Lady Captain Carol said I know she will do a splendid job.
The new Lady Captain Mrs Sue Cullingham was duly elected.
The following Officers were elected: Vice-Captain Adrienne Langston, Secretary Margaret Gray, Competitions Secretary Carol Perks, Handicap Secretary Margaret Castle, and Committee Members Pat Doubleday, Denise Martin, Joyce Smith
The club President presented the trophies that had been won during the year.

After the meeting the Ladies enjoyed a bucks fizz with the new captain followed by her drive in and a 9 hole competition captain v past captains, and they only got a little bit wet.

MICHAEL WINS 2009 RUSHMERE VASE
Michael wins the Vase

Michael Buck won the third Rushmere Vase with a morning round of 70 and an afternoon round of 67 playing off scratch. He was also the winner of the Suffolk Order of Merit section. His playing partners for the day were the young Robert Salter from Ufford Park who is a member of the County Under 14's and Brian Bidwell from Rookery Park. Michael only stepped in at the last minute 8.30pm Saturday night after some badgering from Kelvin Vince and Bob Tawell to fill the slot made vacant due to the illness of young Tom Pettifer from Rookery Park. Michael has been a County Player and with close rival Dave Quinney playing, will surely be trying to tempt him back. Michael is a full time green keeper at Rushmere Golf Club and the greens on the day were in top condition, which was appreciated by the whole field.
