ROOKERY NEWS ROUND UP ....................by David Batley

Photograph:
Geoff Reeves, Carl Fisher and Sean Pike, who with Graham Robbins, Won the Friday Club Night Scramble

The Friday Club Night Christmas Scramble was won by the team of ex-captain and Hambro golfer Carl Fisher, Sean Pike, Geoff Reeves and Graham Robins with 53.3. Gordon Maclean, Jason Hipperson and Graeme Brown, who make a habit of winning prizes, teamed with Warren Graham to score 56.9 and take second place, Third place went to another young lions team of Tom Pettifer, Luke Thompson, Mason Disney and the master of lesser prizes, Ollie Kent with 57.

The Friday Club Night started as a purely social affair run by former steward John Rushworth and grew as it was taken over by former captain and president Sooty Corbett. Several regular Friday golfers complained that the event cluttered the course and spoiled their rounds. They then took a more positive view and joined in. With the event now escalating in importance it eventually came under the wing of Mike Rees and his handicaps’ committee.

Kenny Halliday has just celebrated 50 years as a member by picking up two second prizes. First he finished runner-up to Bert Poole in the seniors’ Sword competition and then went to Gorleston in the Winter Alliance and finished second with Kevin Fitzgerald. Kenny started his golf in the old Pakefield Artisans, a group of golfers who paid a reduced fee but could only play at certain times. The Artisans could use only and old army hut to change in. There were no refreshments and whenever Artisans were caught up on the course by full members they had to stand aside and allow the members to play through. The Artisans were eventually abolished and Kenny has been a full member ever since. Only two other Artisans are still playing members.

Lee Godbold has won one Stableford with 48 pts and finished second in another with 42 pts. A. Wigg has performed a similar feat with scores of 44 pts and 46 pts. The remaining two Stablefords saw a combination of the old and the new. Up and coming junior Sam Jaggard won from Tony Malloy with 43 pts whilst veteran Robin Turner, once a tricky right winger in the days of heavy leather balls, won the other with 44 pts.
