Club - Ladies

Newton Green Ladies AGM and Handover. At the recent AGM outgoing ladies captain, Sally Cade, thanked her committee and members for all their support over the club’s 110th year.  She enjoyed being involved in the decisions on the refurbishment of the clubhouse and reported that the ladies section raised just over £1100 for the club captains’ charity, Kernos Centre.

Incoming captain, Rebecca Evans said the big drive would be to raise money needed to alter the ladies changing room.  The ladies were in the forefront of the running of the club as a whole and were delighted that Dora George had been asked to become a Vice President.  The club captains charity for the year would be the Jude Brady Foundation whose aim is to raise awareness of stillbirth and neonatal deaths in the UK.

Officers for the year:
Captain: Rebecca Evans
Vice-Captain: Lizzie Johnson
Secretary: Di Cunningham
Treasurer: Sue Cooper

Trophies were awarded for 2016 and Sue Lockwood became Lady Golfer of the Year and also won the EG medal for the best four medal rounds throughout the year.

Sally Cade with 2016 trophy winners

Rebecca Evans drive in winners

There was a sea of red when Rebecca Evans made a St Valentine’s Day captain’s drive-in appearance at Newton Green Golf Club.

Also present to give a romantic send-off to her year in office was husband Gareth, who is due to become the club’s men’s captain in the near future.

It will be the first time in the 110 year history of the club that a husband and wife will hold the captaincies in the same year.

A third member of the family, Boris the dog – sporting a red scarf - was also present for Rebecca’s drive-off.

Rebecca, with a handicap of 18, represents Suffolk Women on England Golf, and also runs marathons and other long-distance events.

Her drive-off performance also set a new record for women’s golf at the club, as she hit her shot out-of-bounds! However, the competition to predict the length of her drive did not go unrewarded. Vice-captain Lizzie Johnson had predicted the new captain’s wayward shot and took the prize for guessing the distance of Rebecca’s drive.

Before teeing off, the new captain watched retiring captain Sally Cade putt out her season on the 18th hole.

Following the drive in, 58 lady members played a 10 hole pairs aggregate stableford, the winners being Tibby Mimpriss and Jill Freeman, 53 pts, Jennie Leech and Pat Walsh, 46 pts ocb, Mary Wise and Marian Glumart 46 pts.

Women pay the same subscription as men, and are represented on all main committees, as well as having a committee to manage their specific affairs. Friendly matches are played with other clubs and the section also organises the club’s mixed events. As for all members, to establish a handicap a new member requires three cards signed by another player with, or who has had, a handicap.

Any woman needing a playing partner should contact the Lady Captain or committee member who will be happy to help.

GOLF GETS KNOCKED FOR SIX BY SALLY

It was not cricket – but it was not golf either!

Sports became somewhat confused at the Newton Green lady captain’s day of Sally Cade when members of the golf club decided to celebrate the occasion with a tribute to her second sport.

A 12-handicap golfer, recently retired Colchester sports teacher Sally is a cricket coach.

She and husband Peter also follow Essex cricket.

Sally was persuaded to don pads and waive a bat as she led her captain’s day celebrations.

Lady members then got down to the serious part of the day, golf, playing 18 hole 4 ball better ball with the aid of a piece of string, paying for drives to be taken by Sally, or a male member of the Club who shall remain nameless. The proceeds for these privileges went to the Captains’ Charity, Kernos Centre.

LADIES SECTION AGM

Retiring ladies captain Sheila Walter presided over a well-attended AGM, when she thanked everyone for their help and support throughout her captaincy year, which had welcomed an influx of new members.

Newton Green ladies have been well represented in Suffolk, with Rebecca Evans and Di Cunningham on the Suffolk Ladies Golf Committee, Alice Barlow Suffolk Junior Girls Captain, Eloise Aldous now has full county colours and, along with mum Claire, will be helping with junior girl training.  The Club Captains' Charity, The Bridge Project, had been well supported, with the Christmas raffle alone raising approximately £800.

A year of slings and arrows could be on the horizon for the new ladies’ captain.

She hails from Nottingham, and dressed up as Robin Hood for her frosty morning drive-in.

Friar Tuck, Maid Marion, the Sheriff of Nottingham  and a whole host of other characters from the forest turned up to support the recently retired Colchester school games teacher.

The big crowd on the first tee then saw her hit an arrow-like drive of long bow proportions down the fairway. The opening shot of her season travelled 194 yards, a record for a ladies drive-in at the club, and beat a few drives by some incoming male captains in recent years.

Before starting her season, Sally watched retiring captain Sheila Walter conclude her year by putting out on the 18th green.

Drive-in results: 10 hole Stableford competition, won by Angela Chapman and Susan Sills on 51 points, in second place on 51 were Sue Thurgate and Pat Walsh.

Lunch was followed by animal noises, sometimes heard on the course but not the Clubhouse, when the ladies committee and other members performed  a rendition of Old McDonald had a Farm, including the following words:

Old Maccade is captain of the club
E I E I O
And for today she’s Robin Hood
E I E I O
With an outlaw here and a Friar Tuck there
Here some men, there some dens,
Everywhere Maid Marians
Old Maccade is captain of the club
E I E I O

Old Maccade is captain of the club
E I E I O
And in the club there are some women
E I E I O
With a gossip here and a gossip there
Here a chat, there a chat
Everywhere a chit, chat
Old Maccade is captain of the club
E I E I O

Old Maccade is captain of the club
E I E I O
And in the club there are some men
E I E I O
With a Peter here and a Richard there
Here a Dick, there a Dick
Everywhere a Dick, Dick
Old Maccade is captain of the club
E I E I O

Old Maccade is captain of the club
Old Maccade is captain of the club
E I E I O
And in the club there are some rules
E I E I O
With a hazard here and a drop zone there
Here a fore, there a fore
Everywhere a fore, fore
Old Maccade is captain of the club
E I E I O
