NEWTON MAKES PROGRESS IN HAMBRO

********************** Newton Green Golf Club is through to the quarter finals of the Suffolk Hambro Cup after knocking holders Stowmarket out in the second round. Newton was one of six out of eight teams that made home advantage tell in this low handicap event, and they now visit Felixstowe Ferry in the last eight on June 27. The club has won the trophy three times in the past, but the last occasion was 38 years ago. The pairing of Rob Sims and Mark Duthie proved the big winners of the day, defeating Stowmarket’s Trevor Holley and Paul Buckle by five holes in the morning and six in the afternoon. The winning margin on the 36-hole match was 10-up for Newton, and the top match between Ian Woodhead and Ben Mellon and the visitor’s Martin Darling and Kenton Jameson finished all square at the end of each 18 holes. Adam Woodhead and Steve Wordley got the better of John Jameson and Chris Underwood in both the morning and afternoon sessions, but Mike Polly, partnered by Simon Bearman in the morning and Lee Tatum in the afternoon, finished four down in the afternoon after being two down in the morning.
In the Tolly competition for second teams, Newton lost by 27 holes at Thorpeness.
