CAPTAIN’S DRIVE IN REPORT

The new year saw a new Captain drive in at Newmarket Links Golf Club. Last year’s Club Captain Dave Tyers handed over to Gerry Bangs who drove off the 1st tee to mark the new year. Gerry, who lives in Bottisham, has been a member for 15 years and plays off 21 handicap. Dave Tyers presented Gerry with the club’s green blazer and tie, given to each Captain for his year.

Also driving in were Ladies Captain Alie Tyers who takes over from Hilary Radford and was presented with a special brooch and Junior Captain Mark Bloxham who takes over from Henry Ellis.

During 2009 the Captain’s charities raised £12,000 for St Nicholas Hospice and Crossroads for Carers. Gerry Bangs and Alie Tyers announced they would support Help for Heroes and MacMillan Cancer Care as their charities.

After the presentations the Captain’s hit their tee shots from the 1st tee. The Captain was dressed in top hat and tails, and Alie who is Dutch was wearing her national dress. Members were offered a traditional beef stew and dumplings for lunch after the drive in.

Club Championships

The Links Golf Club held their annual Club Championships when 57 men contested the 36 hole event in near perfect conditions.  The hard and dry condition of the fairways and greens were a challenge to the most experienced players.

Lee Marshall of Newmarket finally became Club Champion for the first time, having filled the runners up position on the last two years.   Lee started the day in fine form from the 11th tee, with a birdie, birdie, eagle start.  Lee continued his round in similar style finishing with a course record equalling five under par 67.  This led by four shots from last years winner Toby Crisp.  Lee showed no signs of nerves in the afternoon as he completed a one under par 71 for an impressive 6 under par total of 138.  This was six shots too good for Toby Crisp who finished on even par 144 (71 & 73), with Andy McAllister third with 149 after rounds of 72 & 77.

In the Reynolds Salver (Handicap), 14 year old Charles Curtis (handicap 11) shot net scores of 66 & 70 for a total of 136, which won the Salver by two shots.  Runner Up was Andrew Duramn with 138 net.

There were also prizes for the Best Morning (gross and net) and Best Afternoon (gross and net), winners were Drew Watson, Ken Parsons, Barry Hall and Mark Bloxham.

The Ennion Salver, for members with handicaps 19-28, was played on Saturday with Mark Curtis (handicap 22) scoring 37 points to win the Stableford event from Neil Kennedy (handicap 19) who was runner up on countback.

An evening meal for all the contestants was enjoyed in the clubhouse after which Club Captain, Gerry Bangs presented the winners with their prizes and congratulated the Head Greenkeeper on the magnificent condition of the golf course.

Ron Birch Presentation

Links Golf Club greenkeeper Ron Birch was presented with a watch by Club President, Andy Wylie on New Years Day. This marked 25 years of service for Ron with the club. Ron who received his gift with his wife Glenda during the club’s New Year celebration, came to Newmarket to become a jockey, has worked in racing and also for the Jockey Club.
