CENTENARY NEWS

Since our last newsletter the Centenary Committee has been working hard on the arrangements for Centenary year ahead. Events suggested previously have now been agreed with formats finalised. Looking at current budget projections the Centenary Committee is planning that all events will be without charge save for the Anniversary Hickory Day, the Centenary Invitation Day and the Centenary Ball. The planned events are as follows:

Wednesday 1st June Anniversary Hickory Day: A foursomes stableford competition (off ¾ handicap), mixed teams allowed. There will be two shotgun starts if there is sufficient interest. Cost £30 per person to include club hire, lunch, ½ bottle of wine per person and prizes.

Saturday 2nd July Club Invitation Day: Two guests will be invited from clubs we play matches against. 42 guests and 42 members will play a four ball better ball (off ¾ handicap) off the white tees. Best 2 on each hole except 3 to count on par 3s and all 4 on the last hole. The event will be an afternoon shotgun start followed by a buffet dinner.

Sunday 3rd July Presidents’ Centenary Trophy: Mixed members golf followed by a cocktail party for the whole membership and their partners. The current idea is for a 3 ball 6some as the Captain/Pro matches (off ½ combined handicap). There will be putting and chipping competitions. There is a Jeremy Dale golf exhibition booked and Jeremy will be on the 18th tee to ‘help’ with driving. The President will provide a new Trophy, thereafter to be played for annually.

Monday 4th July Seniors’ Day Same format as Saturdays event with Seniors inviting representatives of clubs which they play against.

Tuesday 5th July Ladies’ Centenary Day: Morning shotgun start, played in threes. Individual qualifying stableford for a Centenary Cup. Buffet lunch, including ½ bottle of wine per person, followed by afternoon fun foursome’s competition over 9 holes. Afternoon tea and prize giving. Putting competition.

Wednesday 6th July Centenary Members’ Invitation Day: This event will replace one of the normal Men’s Invitations. Possibly two shotgun starts depending on entries. Format will be four ball better ball (off ¾ handicap). Cost £15 per pair, to include golf, buffet, ½ bottle of wine per person and prizes.

Thursday 7th July Veterans’ and Juniors Day: Morning Vets stableford competition (full handicap) off green tees. Open to gentleman members 75 and over. Juniors will have coaching session in morning. Vets, juniors and club team to meet for joint lunch before Club v Juniors match. The Centenary Captain Elect will provide a new Trophy for this event, which will then be competed for in an annual challenge match between the Club and the Juniors.

Captains Ladies’ Day and Captains Day: On Friday 8th and Sat 9th respectively will follow the usual formats.

Centenary Ball Saturday 9th July: The Centenary Committee are working hard on the arrangements for this ‘once in a lifetime’ event. Caterers have been engaged and discussions are ongoing regarding live entertainment. We will be in a position in our next newsletter to confirm ticket prices and announce booking details. However it is a date to place into your diaries now!

The Centenary Committee wish to provide all members with the opportunity to play in at least two or three events during the Centenary week and if needs be entries will be balloted to ensure that all have equal opportunity to play.

Ian now has on sale in the Pro-Shop some of the new Centenary club merchandise, sporting the centenary logo, with more to follow very shortly. He is also displaying a limited edition print of the Centenary Painting which can be purchased through the office (print or canvass).

The competition to design the Centenary tie is ongoing and it has been decided to extend the closing date to the end of August.

So far we have had generous sponsorship offers from a few of members;

As mentioned previously a new clock for the club house is being commissioned with kind support from the Heymans, and plans are moving forward to ensure that this is installed and working in time for the Captains’ Drive-In on 1st January 2011.

A new flag for the Centenary is being kindly donated and designed by Peter Baker. The flag will also be unveiled at the Captains’ Drive – In.

We have also received a generous donation from the Old Boys Schools which will go towards the Centenary Fund.

Sponsorship opportunities for individuals or groups are still available – please contact one of the Centenary Committee to find out more.

As you can see the Centenary Celebrations are being arranged by the club for the club members together with a number of our respected golfing friends and associations. Here’s looking forward to a fitting celebration for this wonderful club, which I hope all members will embrace and fully support.

Centenary News - 2nd January 2010

CENTENARY NEWS

The Centenary Year moves ever closer and the Centenary Committee have been progressing the plans for the Year. The Centenary Week will be a concentrated week of golf and events, for all the members to celebrate our special year. We also want the celebrations to involve, representatives from clubs we play against, members’ guests, family and friends as well as the occasional special guest.

Attached to this Centenary News Update is the Centenary Week Events programme, which will commence on Saturday 2nd July 2011. In addition other events will take place during the year and will for example include a fixture with Rothley Park Golf Club, which is also celebrating it’s Centenary in 2011. The Centenary Committee comprises Ken Argo, Lawrence Hoskins, Nigel Martin, John Edmond (Vice Captain elect), Yvonne Waudby (Ladies Centenary Captain elect), Malcolm Bussey (Seniors Centenary Captain elect), Alastair McInnes and Jill Edmond.

The budgets for the Centenary Week Events are being finalised including details of the Centenary Ball, which will be held on Saturday 9th July 2011. The format and ticket price will be announced as soon as details are complete. It has been agreed that The President’s Centenary Trophy Day on Sunday 3rd July 2011 including a Celebration Cocktail Party will be free, and it is hoped that the whole Membership and their partners will attend the party. This event will also include a number of ‘fun’ competitions as well as, driving help from the 18th tee and a golfing exhibition by Jeremy Dale.

The team is working hard at the budgets for the Men’s Centenary Invitation Day, and the Veterans/Juniors Day. The intention is for members’ participation in these events to be at little or no cost. Further information will be published as soon as they are finalised. The Captain’s Centenary Ladies Day (Friday 8th July 2011) and Captain’s Centenary Men’s Day (Saturday 9th July 2011) events follow the usual format.

Other matters to report include;

(i) A splendid oil painting of the 17th hole has now been completed by the artist Jill Barthorpe this will be ‘informally’ unveiled to Members at the Captains Drive in on 1st January 2010 when Jill will be present.
Members will be able to order edition prints of the painting.
(ii) A new clock is to be installed on the clubhouse, the funding for which is being shared between the Centenary Fund and the Heyman family, who donated the existing clock.
(iii) The Centenary Club Logo has now been agreed by the Centenary Committee. It will gradually replace the Clubs present logo during 2010.
(iv) Ian Burnett is working on a range of centenary clothing, and golfing goods to be available from summer 2010, a centenary tie is being considered, the ladies are thinking what they would like.
We are indebted to Peter Baker, Jerry Simmonds and Steve Carr who are researching, writing and producing a readable history of the Club.

The Club website will have a ‘live’ Centenary page from 1st January 2010. This will be updated as further news on the Centenary Year is finalised, in addition to which a further news letter will be produced for the Members in early Spring 2010.

Finally and by no means least, we are keen to offer sponsorship opportunities to individuals or groups. If you are interested please contact one of the Centenary Committee to discuss the details.
