IMPORTANT NOTICE
It is unfortunately the time of year when we have to protect the course. During the cold wet dormant period, November to March continuous traffic over weak areas will wear the grass surface until it becomes bare.
We have therefore sprayed white lines and put posts and rope up in an effort to move this wear to an acceptable distance from the main playing surface.
These protected areas will then be spiked or hollow tined and seeded to help improve the grass cover for the next playing season.
Whilst I appreciate this is a small inconvenience the benefit to the grass surface is there for all to see.
Please try as far as possible to stay outside of the ropes and white lines and protect our course during the winter.
DURING COLD WEATHER THE USE OF TEMPORARY GREENS OR COURSE CLOSURE MAY BE NECESSARY BECAUSE:
A)
When grass leaf is frozen any traffic on the grass will result in the leaf tissues being damaged. After thawing this tends to show up as brown feet or wheel marks. This also opens the grass up to disease penetration.
B)
The most severe damage is caused when play takes place on a surface that has thawed over a frozen subsurface. The moisture trapped near the surface allows the thawed topsoil to move over the frozen sub surface shearing the grass roots. At this time soil structure can be severely damaged.
The Course is checked on a daily basis with further checks if there is any chance of change. Whilst we try to give the members every opportunity to play we have to remember that considerable damage can be caused at this time of year.
Severe damage caused now can and will last long into the spring.
