Bungay Ladies in Ping Final

Bungay Ladies in Ping, Tournament of England, Final

Heather Squirrell and Helm Wilkinson, of Bungay & Waveney Valley Golf Club, reached the final of the Ping Women’s Four Ball, Better Ball, Tournament of England, which was played on Tuesday 6th September, at Ping’s Gainsborough Golf Club, near Lincoln.

The final was played in difficult conditions, with gale force winds making hard to stand, at times and, with the wind sometimes moving the ball on the fast greens, it made putting tricky.

However, it was a wonderful occasion, with the opportunity to meet Alison Nicholas, Captain of the EuropeanTeam for the Solheim Cup, to hear how she had selected her team, to play against USA, later this month and how they were preparing for the event.

Prior to the tournament, the Ping M.D. impressed on all the competitors that, out of an initial entry of 17,500 ladies, the 60 pairs who had made the final, were all winners.

Heather and Helm finished in 47th place, but the conditions made it a close competition, as they were only 6 shots off 6th place. They were paired with the eventual winners, two 16 year olds, from Hobson Golf Club, Northumberland and more than matched them for the first 8 holes, leading them by 2 points. However, on the back nine, with the wind strengthening, with several par 5s into the wind, they couldn’t match the youngsters’ consistent power and accuracy.

It was a memorable day, meeting players from across the country and Heather and Helm were delighted with their prizes, each winning a Ping Special Edition Golf Bag, a pair of Ecco Golf Shoes and a Ping Special Edition Windproof Top.

Photograph shows Heather, on the right and Helm, on the left.

New Subscriptions 2011

When drawing up the budget for 2011 the committee at Bungay and Waveney Valley Golf Club decided that the time had come for some drastic changes to their Subscription structure. 75% of the membership is aged over 55 and only 5% are aged between 18 and 40. With the long term future of the club clearly susceptible and after extensive discussions and calculations the committee put a proposal to the AGM that introduced an age related graded subscription. In a traditional Golf Club environment this was both brave and ground-breaking but then what would you expect from the Suffolk GolfMark Club of the Year! The adult subscription in 2011 will be £585. For those members aged 18 to 40 a graded subscription in eight bands will mean someone aged 18 will pay £136, at 26 it will be £227 and at 35 £386. Bungay are not alone in struggling with the issue of a diminishing younger membership - it affects virtually all golf clubs. An excellent coaching programme is run by the Junior Section in conjunction with Andrew Collison the Club Professional. The new subscription regime should help the club benefit from this early coaching programme and retain younger members into adulthood.Established in 1889 Bungay and Waveney Valley Golf Club were one of the first member clubs to appoint a Ladies Captain so radical advances are part of their heritage. Bungay and Waveney Valley Golf Club Captains Charity

Len Bird, Captain of Bungay and Waveney Valley Golf Club was delighted to hand to Ann Catherside a cheque for £3041 in favour of Cancer Research UK. During his year as captain of the club various events have helped him realise his objective and he would like to thank all those who took part and helped in raising this money. It was particularly poignant that in choosing this charity he recognised the way in which this awful disease can affect people’s lives as his wife was treated this year for breast cancer and thankfully is on the way to a full recovery.
