Linda Macfarlane wins Volunteer Award

Linda receives Volunteer Award for Club Development
from Suffolk Golf Partnership

Linda Macfarlane, Chair of Haverhill Golf Club’s Junior Committee, was Awarded Volunteer of the Year for Club Development 2011 at a presentation evening organised by the Suffolk Golf Partnership. The Conference and Awards Ceremony was held on Tuesday 8th November at the David Lloyd Leisure Club in Ipswich. Also attending from Haverhill Golf Club were President Chris Briggs, PGA Head Professional Paul Wilby and Club Manager Karen Wilby.

Karen Wilby nominated Linda for the Award because of her involvement in recruiting new Junior Members, as well as her work in attaining the GolfMark High Achiever Award for Haverhill Golf Club. Club President Chris Briggs commented ‘Linda thoroughly deserves recognition for her enormous contribution, especially during the past three years, which has undoubtedly raised number of Junior Members and the profile of our Golf Club.’

Linda has been on the Junior Committee at Haverhill since she was Ladies’ Vice-Captain in April 2007 and she went on to Chair the Junior Committee from January 2008. In April 2009 Linda also took on the role of Junior Organiser on behalf of Haverhill Golf Club for County events. As a result, the fixture list has now been expanded for the Junior Section to include 8 interclub friendly matches, matches against the Ladies and Senior Sections of the Golf Club as well as competing for 14 Junior Cups and Shields. From 2009 onwards Juniors have been encouraged to take part in the East Region Pro-Am at Haverhill and some are also competing in the recently created Suffolk Junior Order of Merit.

The work Linda has put in has been rewarded in a number of ways. In 2011 the number of junior girl members increased to 13, more than double the target which had been set. Achieving the Golf Mark Award was a spring board for Haverhill’s Junior Academy and 7 of the top performing Junior Members improved their handicaps by an average of 22 shots each. Five of the Haverhill Juniors have recently been selected to represent Suffolk, playing for the U14, U16s and U18s County Teams. Haverhill Juniors notably won the Junior Team Handicap Cup in 2010 and they reached the semi-finals in 2011.

This completed the double for Paul in 2011, to match the double he made seventeen years ago, back in 1994.

Haverhill Host 2011 Curry Cup Final

After winning the Curry Cup in 2009, Haverhill was invited to host the 2011 final held on Saturday 24th September. It was another Suffolk-Essex contest, this time between Stowmarket and Gosfield. The morning foursomes matches were dominated by Stowmarket who secured a 5-1 advantage by lunchtime. Maggie Vale Memorial Day 2011

Maggie Vale Memorial Day 2011

The Maggie Vale Memorial Day was held at Haverhill on Tuesday 13th September. Once again, there was tremendous support for this event, held to raise funds for The Teenage Cancer Trust Unit at Addenbrookes and Little Princess Trust, in memory of Haverhill Member, John Vale’s daughter Maggie. This year the funds raised reached an impressive total of £2,500. The prize giving was made by Haverhill’s Head Professional, Paul Wilby and the results were as follows. Junior Golf Academy

Haverhill Golf Club's Magnificent 7

When PGA Professional, Paul Wilby was appointed Head Professional at Haverhill Golf Club in September 2008, one of his aims was to create a Junior Golf Academy. This enabled Junior Members at the Golf Club to improve their skills during the 82 sessions a year set up by both Paul Wilby and Head Assistant Professional, Ollie Rush.

The top 7 juniors who have had their handicaps reduced since the set up of the Haverhill Junior Golf Academy have lost on average 22 shots per player. The Juniors not only attend the sessions, held every Saturday, and on Wednesday evenings through Spring and Summer, but are encouraged to participate in many of the Golf Club’s Adult and Junior competitions.

Paul Wilby, commented “Haverhill Golf Club has always welcomed Juniors into the Club, and when we started the Junior Academy it was clear that we had a bright future. This is being proven with the amazing progress that has and continues to be made within the Junior Section. I run two golf days a year to raise funds to support the Junior Academy, and through the generosity of Members and invited guests, I was able to implement this initiative.”

The Biggest Losers!!
1. Lewis Whiting 36 down to 8
2. Michael Perrett 36 to 7
3. Richard Boyles 30 to 8
4. Liam Merritt 30 to 7
5. Ellis Brown 28 to 11
6. Stephen Boyles 36 to 12
7. Daniel Bentley 26 to 15

Both Paul and Ollie have been instrumental in creating a very successful Junior Section through their coaching. During 2010, Haverhill won the Junior Handicap Team Cup and iIn 2011 the Haverhill Juniors reached the semi finals, but unfortunately lost to Ipswich Golf Club at Newton Green. Some of our Juniors have also participated in the Suffolk County Coaching Programme.

There are many benefits in being part of Haverhill’s Junior Academy. Not only do Juniors learn new golf skills and a sport for life, but also essential social skills, which can assist with their own personal development.

Club President, Chris Briggs added "Since Paul set up the Junior Academy at Haverhill, the improvement has been phenomenal. We have always been strong with our Junior Section, but we now have so much depth, and for the first time in the Club’s history, we have over 10 Junior Girl Members. The Members at Haverhill appreciate all the effort and commitment that both Paul and Ollie have given to our Junior Section.”

If you are interested in joining our Junior Academy, please contact Paul Wilby on 01440 712628

Planning the upgrade for the car park at Haverhill Golf Club began during summer 2010, where a dedicated car park committee was set up. Haverhill member, Len Adams was appointed Project Manager and together with the assistance of the greenkeepers, led by Head Greenkeeper Glenn Norris and a team of volunteers, preparatory work got underway in November. The drainage system was put in place, and cabling and bases for a new lighting scheme installed. Fortunately the bad weather during December did not hamper the work schedule, as the next phase was due to start in February. The kerbing was set out by MD Mills Builders and was completed by the end of February 2011.

The next step was levelling the car park, where an amazing 780 tonnes of road plainings and crushed concrete were use. The car park was closed during March and thankfully the Golf Club was able to use the car park facility at The Woodlands Hotel and overflow car park at Sturmer Common, with kind permission from Sturmer Parish Council.

The block paving started during the middle of March and contractors, Tolly Paving, were able to mechanically lay the blocks which sped up the whole process. It was incredible to observe the operation being carried out, and amazingly the whole area of just under 3000 square metres was covered in just a fortnight!

When Planning Permission had been received from Braintree District Council, the light installation was completed by local electrical contractor, OSE Ltd.

The car park was opened just in time for the Captains Drive in on 2nd April, where Club Captain Keith Brown and Lady Captain Marian Mercer organised an event comprising 124 golfers.
Since the construction of the car park, the Committee have seen a marked increase in visitor numbers, up by 20% on this time last year, and equally encouraging for Haverhill Golf Club is that 30 new members have joined since April 2011.

All the members and visitors have welcomed the upgrade to the facility and it has only been possible because of the support the Golf Club received from St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Greene King. On June 10th the Committee invited all those who had been involved with the project to celebrate the completion of the car park upgrade at the Golf Club’s Parklands Restaurant. Those attending the lunch included Mike Rees, President of the Suffolk Golf Union, Maureen Byrne, Haverhill’s Town Mayor, David Armitage of Greene King, Gordon Mussett, Haverhill Town Clerk, Nick Keeble Arts & Leisure Manager together with Haverhill President Chris Briggs, Club Captain Keith Brown and members of Haverhill Golf Club’s Main Committee.

Wilby's best finish for 20 years!

Best finish for Wilby in twenty years!
Paul Wilby has recorded his best result in the first East Region Order of Merit 2011 event since he turned professional in 1990. The first of six Order of Merit events was played on Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th May at Woolston Manor Golf Club, near Epping, with a strong field of 106 PGA Professionals taking part. The venue required good course management and patience. On day one, Wilby scored a level par 72 and was lying in 31st place. He then fired a best of the day 69 (3 under par) on day two, in extremely windy conditions to move up to 3rd place with Darren Charlton and Danny Poulter (Ian Poulter’s brother). Wilby said “I am extremely pleased with my start to the Order of Merit season and I am now looking forward to the next event in June. With limited time to practice, playing is not my priority these days, but I still love to be competitive”. Wilby won the Suffolk Open back in 1997, but had his career best finish on the Futures Tour (now Euro-Pro Tour) also in 1997, when he won at Royal Norwich with a two round total of 6 under par. The next Order of Merit is at Bishops Stortford Golf Club on June 8th & 9th. Sky TV will be showing a 1 hour feature of this event in the near future, but a date has not yet been released.

Result:
1. Sean Whiffin 5 under par (Hertfordshire Golf & Country Club)
2. Brett Taylor 4 under par (Chelmsford Golf Club)
3. Paul Wilby (Haverhill Golf Club), Darren Charlton (Dunstable Downs), Danny Poulter (Bedford)
all 3 under par

Linton Enterprise Classic 2011

LINTON ENTERPRISE CLASSIC 2011

Mike Bennett & Graham Hepworth, winners of the 2011 Linton Enterprise Classic

The Linton Enterprise Classic was played on Sunday 15th May as a pairs four ball better ball stableford. Although the field was down on last year, the funds raised through the sponsorship and raffle was a lot higher than expected. Terry Bishop, the event organiser, thanked all those for taking part, especially the sponsors whose loyalty and generosity over the years was greatly appreciated. Terry also thanked the volunteers, his wife Wendy and daughter Ailie, who assisted with running the event on the day. The total raised from the Linton Enterprise over the past 11 years has reached in excess £13,000.00. The funds are being reinvested in projects to improve the facilities at the Golf Club. On the day, the weather just about held up and there were some good scores returned. Winning nearest the pin for the ladies on the 8th was Lyn Fish, and for the men on the 12th, Paul Donno. The score for the best back nine with 21pts went to Tom McKenzie and Richard Norden. The best front nine went to Haverhill Juniors, Liam Merritt and Mitchell Davis with 25pts. The overall winners on count back were Mike Bennett and Graham Hepworth with 43pts, in 2nd place were Dennis Harkness and Ivan Drury with 43pts, in 3rd place were Gavin Hatton and Andy Cage with 42pts and in 4th place, Haverhill Juniors Lewis Whiting and James Higham with 41pts.

Suffolk Amateur Foursomes Champions

Suffolk Amateur Foursomes Champions 2011

Report by Tony Garnett...

Suffolk County Captain David Quinney and three-handicap junior Chris Vince formed a solid partnership to win the MacLeod Cup as Suffolk Amateur Foursomes champions at Bungay and Waveney Valley Golf Club. There was a cloudless sky but a fierce wind, which blew relentlessly all day, resulted in some high scores on a heathland course designed by James Braid 122 years ago and which has stood the test of time.

Quinney and Vince led by two shots after a first round of 70 with Hintlesham’s county pair, Phil Westley and Jack Cardy, their closest rivals. Gorleston secretary David James and Danny Western were also well placed three shots off the pace. In the afternoon all the first round leaders started to drop shots. It was Jimmy Price and Billy MacLeod of Felixstowe Ferry who set the target with 147 thanks to a second round of 71. Price had originally planned to play with Mel Pipe who called off unfit so MacLeod, another member of the Felixstowe Ferry Stenson Shield squad, was a late replacement.

Quinney and Vince, starting on the 11th for their second round, needed to par their final hole to prevent a play-off. Quinney’s drive went with the wind perilously close to the practice ground which was out of bounds. Vince found the green from some 90 yards and Quinney’s accurate downhill putt left a tap-in for victory. It would have been strange had MacLeod won the MacLeod Cup. In the event he and Price were able to take the Watts Salvers back to Felixstowe.

The most dramatic recovery of the day came from Woodbridge’s Chris Ginn and Adrian Studd. They had an 89 in the morning and followed up with 72 in the afternoon. Racecourse stewards would have demanded an explanation. In golf these changes in fortune can happen all too easily on a day when anything wayward was heavily punished. Two of Suffolk leading seniors, reigning champion Roger Taylor and former Ipswich Golf Club professional Stephen Whymark, took third place with Cardy and Westley, both of whom will be playing in the Brabazon qualifier at The Berkshire on May 10, slipping to fourth.

Leading gross scores
146: D Quinney (Haverhill) and C Vince (Ipswich) 70 76.
147: J Price and W MacLeod (Felixstowe) 76 71.
150: R Taylor (Aldeburgh) and S Whymark (Woodbridge) 74 75.

Junior Success

Haverhill’s Golf Club Magnificent 7

The top 7 juniors who have had their handicaps reduced over the last 2 years have lost on average almost 21 shots per player. This is down to the constructive Junior Academy, Club Professional Paul Wilby put into place on his arrival, a lot of hard work, practice and participation in both Junior and Adult competitions. Each session costs £1 and this is used to support Junior expenditure to ease pressure on Junior Funds. There are 82 sessions a year for Junior members; every Saturday of the year and Tuesday evenings during the summer months.

Paul Wilby, Club Professional said, Haverhill Golf Club has always welcomed Juniors into the Club, and when we started the Junior academy it was clear that we had a bright future, this is being proven with the amazing progress that has and continues to be made within the Junior Section. I run two golf days a year to raise funds to support the Junior Academy, and through the generosity of Members and invited guests, I was able to implement this initiative.

The Biggest Losers!!
1. Lewis Whiting 36 down to 9
2. Michael Perrett 36 to 12
3. Richard Boyles 30 to 7
4. Liam Merritt 30 to 10
5. Harvey Bavester 28 to 9

Haverhill Golf Club hosted a Charity Day for the Teenage Cancer Trust Unit at Addenbrookes back in September, and raised a fantastic £2140. The event was held in the memory of Maggie Vale, daughter of Haverhill Golf Club Member, John Vale, who organised the event with the help from Club Professional, Paul Wilby.
On the day, 72 golfers took part with another 15 guests joining the competitors afterwards for a fabulous dinner prepared by Head Chef Jon Grimwood and his staff, at the Golf Club’s Parklands Restaurant. The meal was followed by a raffle and auction which was a great success and boosted the final total. John Vale stated “I would like to thank all who took part in the day and to the kind sponsors who made such a great contribution between them. It was a very proud day for me and my family and we thank Haverhill Golf Club for enabling us to use their venue in order to host this fundraiser.”
Paul Wilby, Club Professional, added “it has been an honour to help John for this extremely worthy cause, and to be able to help the day become the success it was, in such difficult times. I was giving John a lesson one day when he mentioned his plan and he was pleased that we at the Golf Club could help. A big thank you must go to our voluntary Committee who authorised the Charity Day to go ahead, and without their support we could not have staged this event.”
The winners of the Stableford team competition were: S Mitson, P Blye, L McDonald, A McDonald with 88pts, (on count back, with a back nine score of 45pts). In 2nd place were N Farley, G Wilson, C Powell & P Stevenson with 88pts also (back nine score of 42pts). In 3rd place were M French, I French, W French & C French with 82pts.

Text Messaging Service

NEW TEXT MESSAGING SERVICE

As of December 2010, Haverhill Golf Club has introduced a new text messaging service for Golf Club Members. The aim is to keep the membership updated with course information and changes to tee reservations. This is especially useful during the winter months, so that you will be able to make alternative arrangements if necessary. We will keep the number of messages down to a minimum, so if for example  the course is closed due to bad weather or if there is a trolley ban, or if it is lifted we can let you know.

For more general information for example whether or not there are temporary greens,
please contact the Pro Shop on 01440 712628 or the Course Information line 01440 762885
as appropriate.

If you would like to be included in our text message database, or if you are already receiving
messages and would prefer not to receive them, then please contact the office and we will update
our records accordingly.

Liam Merritt wins Award

Ransomes Jacobsen Award for Merritt
At the aged of 14, Liam Merritt recently won the prestigious Ransomes Jacobsen Junior Golf Award, organised by the Suffolk County Golf Partnership to recognise outstanding achievements by junior golfers in Suffolk over the past 12 months. The Award Ceremony, held on Wednesday 1st September, was also attended by the Junior Girls’ winner, Sarah Jane Barker from Rookery Park. The presentation followed a 3 hole round of golf on the sponsor’s, Ransomes Jacobsen, course at their Head Office in Ipswich. Liam was nominated by Haverhill Junior Organiser, Linda Macfarlane, in recognition of his dedication to the game of golf and to the Golf Club itself. Liam joined the Junior Section of Haverhill Golf Club in May 2009 and within days he was attending the Saturday Junior Academy, run by Head Professional Paul Wilby and his Assistant Professional, Ollie Rush. Liam continued to practice regularly throughout the school summer holiday during 2009. He attended almost all of a possible 77 Junior Academy sessions and is an Elite Junior Academy Member. Liam’s handicap has been cut from 36 to 12 since joining the club, and his attendance at the Academy and continued practice and competing has no doubt played an essential part in this success. In March 2010, Liam was awarded the Junior Committee Trophy, for ‘Outstanding levels of involvement in coaching practicing, competitions and events’. He has played in Junior County Competitions as well as interclub matches and has been an excellent team member, fighting to win, and always being unfailingly well-mannered in success or failure. There have been successes in Club competitions; in the winter of 2009, Liam won the first four, newly instituted, junior medals and the Peter Bowers Trophy in 2009/10. The Junior Committee was impressed by Liam from the day he joined the club, and wholeheartedly recommended him for the Ransomes Jacobsen Award.

Course Marshalls

Haverhill has become one of the most popular golf courses in East Anglia and its fast greens and excellent condition has drawn golfers far and wide. With increasing demand it was decided that in order to regulate the pace of play around the course, a marshalling system would be required.
Mr Syd Gould has recently been appointed as the Golf Club’s Head Marshall and he now leads a team of seven, all of whom are volunteer Haverhill Club golfers. The marshalls will be able to assist with hosting large golf events and competitions, making golf more enjoyable for members and
visitors alike.

2009/2010 Presentations at Haverill....

ANNUAL PRESENTATION EVENING

Haverhill Golf Club's Annual Presentation Evening was held on Saturday March 13th, where all the winners from the 2009/2010 season gathered to collect their prizes. On this occasion a new trophy, The Bob Hutchinson Cup, was donated by Trisha Hutchinson and her mother Eileen, who were special guests for the evening. The new trophy was in memory of Eileen's husband, Bob, who was the first headmaster of Chalkstone Middle School in Haverhill. Although Bob and Eileen were members at Saffron Walden for over 35 years, Bob campaigned for a golf course in Haverhill. Together with Mr Johnson, a local Surveyor, they sat on the first planning applications for the Haverhill Golf Course. As his daughter commented ‘My father would have been filled with pride and admiration today for what Haverhill has achieved. More especially he would be immensely honoured to congratulate and applaud another golfer’s success through the presentation of the Bob Hutchinson Cup’. The trophy was awarded to Haverhill Junior, Harvey Bavester, as the midweek medal final winner.

The Ladies Section had their Presentation Evening on Thursday 18th March, hosted by Past Lady Captain Doreen Darbey and Lady Captain Sally Price. It was a great night of celebration for the 2009/2019 season, with Catie Heathfield winning Lady Golfer of the Year. Eastern Region Senior Ladies Championship

Rosemary Farrow wins Eastern Region Senior Ladies Championship at Haverhill

Haverhill Golf Club was privileged to host the inaugural Eastern Region Senior Ladies Championship (for over 50s) on Tuesday 12th July. A competitive field of 42 ladies entered the tournament, 8 of which played off single figure handicaps, and represented clubs from across counties in the East Region, including Suffolk, Essex, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.

The course, as usual, was set up to a very high standard by Head Green Keeper Glenn Norris and his team; the greens were very fast, which challenged the field and this was reflected in the competition scratch score being raised to 75.

Afterwards, Haverhill’s Lady Captain, Marian Mercer thanked all the ladies for taking part and hoped they enjoyed the day’s competition and hospitality at Haverhill. Marian then went onto thank the Members from Haverhill, especially Lady Vice Captain, Doreen Darbey, Gill Richardson, Kathy Bowman, Syd Gould and Mick Turner for assisting on the day. Event Organiser and EWGA Representative, Anne Archer from Ipswich Golf Club and Judi Walker from Stowmarket Golf Club made the prize presentation and announced the results as follows:

Nomination for National Award

HAVERHILL GOLF CLUB

NOMINATED FOR NATIONAL AWARD

Haverhill Golf Club has been nominated to represent Suffolk in the GolfMark ‘Club of the Year 2009’ by Colin Firmin, Chair of the Suffolk Golf Foundation and his Committee. The selected ‘Club of the Year’ will be invited to a ceremony at The National Golf Centre, Woodhall Spa in February 2010.

Back in April 2009, Haverhill Golf Club received EGU/EWGA GolfMark (incorporating ClubMark) accreditation and the Club has been nationally recognised as a junior and beginner friendly golf club. The award was made at the ‘High Achiever’ level which shows the club has met additional criteria well over and above the minimum standards required to achieve GolfMark. Chair of the Junior Committee, Linda MacFarlane, was the driving force behind the Club’s achievement and at the time Haverhill was only the second club in Suffolk to attain this status, which encompasses many aspects surrounding coaching and playing, club environment, child protection and duty of care. With the Club being fortunate to retain Paul Wilby as their Professional, the future continues to look extremely bright for Haverhill golf, as Paul and his Assistant Professional Ollie Rush run ‘Junior Academy’coaching sessions every weekend throughout the year. The Club is also a Starter Centre for The Golf Foundation.

For further information regarding the Junior Academy, please contact Paul Wilby at Haverhill Golf Club direct on 01440 712628.

Chris, who plays off a handicap of 6, finished with a gross score of 75, nett 69. Head of Haverhill Junior Academy, Paul Wilby commented "I am delighted with the progress that Chris has made over the last 6 months. Proud Week -

PROUD WEEK FOR HAVERHILL GOLF CLUB

What a week it has been for the golf staff at Haverhill Golf Club. Ollie Rush has become the 2009 Del Bower Suffolk Assistant’s Champion, winning in style via a play off. Ollie had scores of 73 and 74 at a testing and very windy Hintlesham Golf Club, finishing equal with Ryan Wingate of Ipswich Golf
Club (Purdis Heath) and formerly a Junior Member at Haverhill Golf Club and Assistant at Saffron Walden. A birdie at the first play off hole secured Ollie’s first Professional win and afterwards he said “I am thrilled to have won this prestigious event, sponsored by Mr Del Bower (Suffolk PGA President,
and Mr Tony Garnett (Suffolk PGA Secretary) and thank them for their support. I would like to thank my long game coach, Stuart Robertson (Ufford Park) and Paul Wilby (Haverhill Golf Club) for my short
game and also my sponsors, Atlantic Health & Spa. The course at Hintlesham was in excellent condition and helped the scoring on a difficult day.”
Harry Mills, who has been a junior member at Haverhill for 6 years and plays off a handicap of 3, has successfully opened the door to the world of Professional Golf by passing his PGA Playing Ability test
over 36 holes at Bishops Stortford Golf Club. He can now start the process of turning professional and taking a Birmingham University Degree Course in golf, which will take 3-4 years to complete before becoming a full member of the Professional Golfers’ Association. Harry said “I am delighted
with my qualification rounds and I’m looking forward to playing as a Professional Golfer. We have our PGA East Region Pro-Am here on 28th August and I am hopeful that I will be eligible to play as a
Professional and not as an amateur in this event. I would like to thank Haverhill Golf Club for their support over the last 6 years and look forward to being of service for many years to come.” Paul Wilby the Club Professional commented “I am very proud of my team, who have achieved significant steps forwards in their own careers. The boys work very hard and are a great asset to myself and to the Golf Club. I look forward to the future development of these two promising Assistant Professionals and I’m very happy with their commitment with the day-to-day running of the Golf Club
and the service they provide to our Members.

Golf Mark Award -

GOLFMARK AWARD

Haverhill Golf Club has been successful in their pursuit of the EGU/EWGA GolfMark (incorporating ClubMark) accreditation and now the club will be nationally recognised as a junior and beginner friendly golf club. What has delighted the membership is that the award has been made at the ‘High Achiever’ level which shows the club has met additional criteria well over and above the minimum standards required to achieve GolfMark. Haverhill is only the second club in Suffolk to attain this status which encompasses many aspects surrounding coaching and playing, club environment and child protection and duty of care. With the club being fortunate to retain Paul Wilby as their Professional the future looks extremely bright for Haverhill golf as Paul heads up his own ‘Junior Academy’ and in the short while he has been operating at Coupals Road he has already attracted a healthy group of young ladies into his coaching sessions. The club is also a Starter Centre for The Golf Foundation.

The driving force of the junior committee who strived to gain the award was Linda Macfarlane and she is pictured with Alistair Spink receiving the ClubMark certificate.

JUNIOR GOLF IN HAVERHILL  - 2009

Ollie Rush with some of the Sunday morning juniors at Haverhill Golf Club

Following their recent move to Haverhill Golf Club, Professionals Paul Wilby and Ollie Rush are focusing on encouraging and promoting junior golf in the area. Wilby and Rush have been working closely with the Suffolk Sports Partnership, who have funding for school visits with Tri Golf. This is a fun way for youngsters to start playing golf with specially designed golf equipment for safety in the school environment. So far the pair have worked in eight local schools and are thrilled with the interest from the pupils who are involved.?

The Junior Academy sessions at the Haverhill Golf Club are already proving to be successful, with classes running on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Saturdays are strictly for junior members of the club and an hour?s tuition is only ?1 per junior. This is subsidised by two golf days that the Club run annually to create funding for the coaching costs. All ?1 fees are pumped straight back into the junior fund for any necessary expenses. The Sunday classes are open to non members ages 5-16 who are welcome to join in with the fun, social and well structured group coaching. At the moment there are two 1 hour sessions run, with start times of 10am and 11am and these will be added to when both sessions are regularly full. There is a constant 15-18 showing up each week at the moment and booking is essential to guarantee a place and also for safety reasons. The cost per session is ?4 and is excellent value for money; golf clubs are supplied free of charge.?

It is Haverhill Golf Club?s aim to progress any junior who has the right attitude to golf to become a junior member and join in with the ?1 sessions, which are also held on Tuesday evenings when light permits. This session will last for an hour and a half and starts at 6pm. Wilby said ?looking forward I see our junior section going from strength to strength, as the juniors make progress through these coaching opportunities, with their skill and enjoyment levels rising month on month. The Sunday morning classes are a great way to get your youngster into this great game where not only will they get good exercise but learn a lot of life skills by being part of this friendly Club?.
