Members - Rabbits

Welcome to the Rabbits Section of the Golf Club, which is open to all members with a men’s handicap of 19 or over.

We currently play friendly matches throughout the year against twelve other local clubs, twenty two matches in the summer months and six matches during the winter. Summer home matches start at 1.30pm followed by dinner. Most of the summer away matches follow the same format but some clubs have adopted a morning start with breakfast or brunch beforehand. Winter matches start with a breakfast between 8-30am and 9.30am and finish with a light lunch, usually sandwiches and chips, after the match.  The matches represent a fantastic opportunity to play at courses such as Northwood, Batchworth Park, Finchley, Hendon and Ealing with no green fees - you just pay for the meals. Matches consist of four or five fourball games in a better ball matchplay format.

The ethos of Rabbits golf is the taking part - playing the game and enjoying the company of other golfers from different clubs. Winning is nice but secondary in our matches.

The Stanley West group of thirteen clubs’ Rabbits sections is coordinated by Sudbury Golf Club, who organise the Stanley West Trophy, a knockout competition with each round consisting of nine singles matches. In 2018, we lost in the first round away to a strong Batchworth Park team and in 2019 our first round match is at home against Hendon. The Stanley West Captains and Secretaries competition, together with the Super Rabbit competition, was held at Stanmore on 13th September 2018 and our entrants in the Captains and Secretaries competition, Nick Ball and Colin Myrtle, came a very creditable second. The Grim’s Dyke Super Rabbit entrant, Derek Dolman, did not do so well. Our entrant in this competition is chosen on the basis of performance in the friendly matches played during the summer season up to the date of the competition, with a requirement to have played in at least 50% of the matches. Accordingly Derek Dolman represented us in the Super Rabbit competition but the overall Grim’s Dyke Top Rabbit for the whole of the summer season was Simon Peters, who overtook Derek in the last match.

The major golfing event of the Rabbits year is the Invitation Day, held on the last or penultimate  Monday of July. Over 70 players take part, including Grim’s Dyke Rabbits and their guests, and players from the other clubs we play throughout the year. Each year the event raises significant funds for a charity of the Rabbits Captain’s choice.

Our social event of the year is the Rabbits Dinner, held at the end of February, at which Rabbits players and former players, as well as their partners, are invited to enjoy a three course meal. This is also the occasion when trophies are presented for the winners of the Amey, Daws, Warren and Top Rabbit competitions.
There are seven Trophy competitions organised by the Rabbits Section:-

Fenton Cup – awarded to the leading Grim’s Dyke Rabbit in the afternoon Stableford competition on the Invitation Day. The winner’s name also goes up on the honours board, located in the Gilbert Room. In 2018 the winner with 41 points was Colin Myrtle, seen here receiving the trophy from the Club Captain, Tim Williams.

Amey Trophy – a competition which starts  with all entrants playing on the same day in April or early May in a Stableford format with the top sixteen going through to the matchplay part of the competition. The winner of the trophy in 2018 was Ian Drew.

Warren Trophy - a Stableford competition, generally played in early October followed by the Rabbits AGM and lunch. The winner in 2018 was Vince Stapleton, who tied with Peter Bucknole over the 18 holes on 39 points, but won on the back 9 with 20 points to Peter’s 19.

Rabbit Run - a three clubs and putter competition played in early December and open to all members of the club including the Ladies.  The Rabbit Run trophy is awarded to the leading Rabbit on the day and in 2018 the winner was Alan Weide with a tremendous 42 points. The winning non-Rabbit was Richard Hebberd with 29 points and the winning lady was Julie Nash with 31 points.

Daws Trophy - a Stableford competition played in September, and won in 2018 by Peter Topping with a score of 36 points.

Top Rabbit (Summer and Winter) Points are awarded for performances in the interclub matches and separate trophies are awarded for the most consistent performances throughout the summer and winter seasons. The Top Rabbit for summer 2018 was Simon Peters and for winter 2017-18 the Top Rabbit was Nick Ball.

If you have a men’s handicap of 19 or over you are more than welcome to join the Rabbits.  There is no joining fee or subscription – all it takes is to put your name down for one of the forthcoming fixtures or events listed on the Rabbits notice board.
