Members - Rabbits

Welcome to the Rabbits Section of the Golf Club, which is open to all members with a men’s handicap of 19 - 28.

We currently play friendly matches throughout the year against thirteen other local clubs, twenty three matches in the summer months and ten matches during the winter. Summer home matches start at 1.30pm followed by dinner. Most of the summer away matches follow the same format but some clubs have adopted a morning start with breakfast or brunch beforehand. Winter matches start with a breakfast between 8-30am and 9.30am and following the golf a light lunch, usually sandwiches and chips, is served. The matches represent a fantastic opportunity to play at courses such as Northwood, Batchworth Park, Finchley, Hendon and Ealing with no green fees - you just pay for the meals. Matches consist of four or five fourball games in a better ball matchplay format.

The ethos of Rabbits golf is the taking part - playing the game and enjoying the company of other golfers from different clubs. Winning is nice but secondary in our matches.

The Stanley West group of thirteen clubs is coordinated by Sudbury Golf Club, who organise the Stanley West Trophy, a singles knockout competition. In 2017, we lost in the first round at home to a very strong Ealing team and in 2018 our first round match is away to Batchworth Park. The Stanley West Captains and Secretaries competition, together with the Super Rabbit competition, was held at Hendon Golf Club on 14th September 2017 but we were unlucky in both events. The Grim’s Dyke Super Rabbit entrant is chosen on the basis of performance in the friendly matches played during the summer season, with a requirement to have played in at least 50% of the matches.

The major golfing event of the Rabbits year is the Invitation Day, usually held on the last Monday of July. Over 70 players take part, including Grim’s Dyke Rabbits and their guests, and players from the other clubs we play throughout the year. Each year the event raises significant funds for a charity of the Rabbits Captain’s choice.

Our social event of the year is the Rabbits Dinner, held at the end of February, at which Rabbits players and former players, as well as their partners, are invited to enjoy a three course meal with wine provided. This is also the occasion when most of the previous year’s Rabbits trophies are presented.
There are seven Trophy competitions organised by the Rabbits Section:-

Fenton Cup – awarded to the leading Grim’s Dyke Rabbit in the afternoon Stableford competition on the Invitation Day. The winner’s name also goes up on the honours board, located in the Gilbert Room. In 2017 the winner with 39 points was Robin Gevell, seen here receiving the trophy from the Club Captain, Gerry Mann.

Amey Trophy – a competition which starts with all entrants playing on the same day in April in a Stableford format with the top sixteen going through to the matchplay part of the competition. The winner of the trophy in 2017 was Raymond Ma, beating Bernard Black in the final.
Warren Trophy - a Stableford competition, generally played in early October followed by the Rabbits AGM and lunch. The winner in 2017 was Nick Ball with 40 points.

Rabbit Run - a three clubs and putter competition played in early December and open to all members of the club including the Ladies. The Rabbit Run trophy is awarded to the leading Rabbit on the day and in 2016 the winner was Mike Brunton.

Daws Trophy - a Stableford competition played in September, and won in 2017 by Colin Viall, with a magnificent score of 42 points which, unfortunately for us, has resulted in a handicap reduction to 17, taking him out of the Rabbits, but congratulations to Colin.

Top Rabbit (Summer and Winter) Points are awarded for performances in the interclub matches and separate trophies are awarded for the most consistent performances throughout the summer and winter seasons. The Top Rabbit for summer 2017 was Peter Topping and for winter 2016-17 the Top Rabbit was Peter Murray.

If you have a men’s handicap of 19 or over you are more than welcome to join the Rabbits. There is no joining fee or subscription – all it takes is to put your name down for one of the forthcoming fixtures or events listed on the Rabbits notice board.
