| Arthur England |
Arthur England Am-AM, The oldest club celebrates its oldest golfer To celebrate the memory of Arthur England Great Yarmouth and Caister golf club hold an annual fun day of golf. The competition is a Texas Scramble event. As well as remembering and paying tribute to Arthur the club have used this event in recent times as a fund raiser. Lenny Johnson former club captain recalled how disappointed, Arthur was when at age 101 his playing partners, mere octogenarians, only wanted to play 10 holes. In glorious sunshine with the familiar strong breeze a very large field posted some incredible scoring. The winning team was Lenny Johnson, no youngster these days ,Tim Starbuck, John Garrod and guest Simon Louise . In front of a packed club house Arthur’s memorial cane was presented by Club Captain Rodney Beckett to the winning team. Lenny said it was a great day like turning the clock back he said and how much he had enjoyed watching his golden retrievers fetch his ball back from all over the course. Lenny sank the winning put on the final hole. Later in the year the club will pay tribute to its other centurion golfer Jack Chase in his annual bogey competition.

This was the Penn Medal, steeped in history, presented by John Penn MP during his year as Captain in 1886. The first winner was Horace G Hutchinson who has often been thought of as ‘the best English Amateur golfer ever’. His score on the day was 83 which was soundly bettered on Sunday by two of the Club’s top golfers, James Ollington (4) and Simon Clark (0) who both shot gross 72 conquering a course presented in superb condition with fast, true-running greens and lively fairways. This was Simon’s 7th victory in the event in the past 8 years and James’ first. In the handicap event for the Lucas Cup the winner was Matt Jackson with a very creditable Nett 68. A further highlight of his round was seeing his playing partner Graham Leak score a hole-in-one on the 14th with a 6 iron tee shot. | Golf Days UK |
Great Yarmouth, Great Golf, Grrrreatrex!
Winner Steve Greatrex receiving his prizes
Golf Days UK launched their brand new Norfolk Tour for 2013 and 40 players lined up ready to brave the conditions and earn some points for their order of merit total. With temperatures barely above freezing, a persistent wind and even the odd snow shower it made for some of the toughest conditions ever in a Golf Days UK Tour Event. It was the members of Great Yarmouth and Caister, well-rehearsed at playing in tricky weather, who bagged all the prizes on the day and seemed unaffected as some fantastic golf was observed. Steve Greatrex making his debut in a Norfolk Tour event was the deserved winner on the day with 38 points off his ¾ handicap of 4. He will be cut a full stroke for his future events on the tour but starts the season in the strongest position with 100 order of merit points. For winning the event, Steve also received a pair of Loudmouth Golf Trousers of his choice and a pair of Adidas Powerband 2 Golf Shoes supplied by Chris Potter Golf. Golf Days UK Tour regular Cain Esherwood also a member at Caister started his 2013 campaign with a very steady 36 points playing off 9 and claimed 95 Order of Merit points and a Cobra Wedge. Completing the member’s domination was 1 handicapper, Thaine Hacon with 35 points, who received 92 Order of Merit Points and chose a Nike hat for his third prize. Thaine took third spot on countback with an impressive 3 under gross back nine to amass 22 points against James Cundy’s 16. The full leaderboard can be viewed by clicking below. There were two nearest the pin awards on the day and these were won by Thaine Hacon on the 7th and Steve Greatrex on the 12th. The new scoring system for 2013 means that players are aiming to earn as many order of merit points as they can from their best five finishes during the 10 events. The top fifteen in the leaderboard after 10 events will then qualify for the final at Sheringham Golf Club and the winner of the final will be crowned champion and win the trip to Gleneagles Resort, Scotland in the Ryder Cup year. In addition to that, the player with the highest order of merit score from their five events will win a set of custom fit irons supplied by Chris Potter Golf. Last year’s tour runner up Adam Saunders was in action again finishing in 5th place, using his prize from last year, brand new custom fitted Titleist AP2’s from Chris Potter.

| February Stableford |
Golf Lovers brave the elements After a fabulous Valentine dinner at the Great Yarmouth and Caister Golf Club the golfers took to the links to play in February stableford. Sunday was strictly a day for golfing lovers. A biting wind blowing from the south, but with all the symptoms of a cold northerly gale, made conditions very difficult. Not being deterred, a large field produced some great golf. It took a tough Scouser to come out on top as Billy Humphreys posted a very credible 38 points to win from Tony Voss and Nigel Drewery who also managed to keep cool while everyone was freezing. While most courses are wallowing in mud, mud glorious mud, Caister provides a superb test of golf playing in outstanding condition. The nineteenth hole was a great place to warm up those winter chills and be amazed at the standard of golf that had been posted. Caister’s Daily Mail team of Thaine Hacon, Alex Fellas, Terry Norman, Steve Greatrex & Oliver Cribb was in action at Royal Norwich and the match went to the wire with the home team winning on the last hole of the last match to take the tie 3-2 The Ladies team was also in action at Bawburgh losing narrowly in the mud 3-2. The next Caister competition will be a 4BBB on Sunday 17th with the Lacon Cup the week after.

| Captains |
Golf Club salutes the Captains In a very successful break from tradition the Great Yarmouth and Caister Golf Club paid tribute to its elected Captains for 2013. The Club Captain Rodney Beckett and the Captain of the ladies section Jeni Rose both drove in ahead of a massive field for a festive Texas scramble. The Captains used the centenary driver presented to the club to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 1982. Not the best drives Rodney or Jeni have hit in their golfing careers but after careful measurement it was the ladies section that were doing the most cheering. The winning tickets for the Captain’s drive in were held by John Tweed and Jason Dent who both received a festive prize. A very competitive field of golfers battled hard in the winter sunshine with some terrific scoring, 18 slick greens and a links course playing magnificently well. The winning team consisting of Tom Rutherford, Tom Gilbert, James Ollington and Will Johnson who shot an incredible gross ten under par 60 netting down to a 56.9 shots. The runners up were Richard Betts, Josh Brooks, Colin Lord and Glyn Chapman with a net score of 59. Individual prizes were won by Jean Johnson for nearest the pin on the 7th.Richard Betts was nearest the pin on the 12th. Steve Greatrex was nearest the pin on the 14th (Half a turn away from a very expensive hole in one), nearest the pin on the 17th was Past Captain and Past President Richard Masterson showing a pleasing return to form. Nearest the pin in two on the second was Alex Fellas. The Captains team had played well and defeated most of the other teams who had to dig deep into their pockets to contribute to the Captains’ charities for being beaten. At a packed presentation the Captain thanked the members who took part and wished them the compliments of season and all the best for a great golfing New Yea r. Afterwards a pint,a hot roast roll and much merrymaking got the festive season at Caister off to a tremendous start.
