The Seniors Section, Girton Golf Club

All male members of Girton Golf Club over the age of 55 are automatically members of it's Senior Section - "The Seniors". We believe we are one of the friendliest groups in the area and we would like to tell you about our activities and encourage you to join our club and enjoy just as many of our golfing and social events as you see fit.

1. Weekly "Get-Togethers"

These core events take place every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the year. Just turn up in the locker room in time for the draw for partners (7:50AM in summer, 8:20AM in winter) and enjoy the game, whatever your standard. The results, together with the inevitable reports of miracle shots, near misses and regular "banditry" are fully debated afterwards over much laughter, baskets of chips and coffee, beer, or whatever you favour. These are great social golf events and an excellent way to meet up with fellow members. To view our "Get-Together" Rules see below.

2. Annual Meetings

The Spring Meeting in April, The Invitation Day in June, the Autumn Meeting in September and The Winter Meeting in December are big social occasions, playing for prizes and having a leisurely jacket and tie lunch afterwards. The Spring and Winter Meetings also include simultaneous 9 hole competitions, for those not wishing to play 18 holes. To view a list of dates for our Annual Meeting in 2003 see below.

3. Matches

The Seniors play 26 weekday matches each year between March and September. Everyone is able to participate and it is a great way to experience a variety of courses and to meet with members of other local clubs. Many friendships are renewed in the bar after finishing play and during the jacket and tie lunches which round off these events. To view a list of the 2003 matches, plus results so far, see below.

4. Methuselah Trophy and Enoch Medal

These competitions are played simultaneously in September over 18 holes and 9 holes respectively. They allow players age 70 and over to enjoy some friendly competition with their peers and to have a social get together afterwards.

5. Other Events

These include:

Our annual Knockout Competition, which runs between April and September;

The Senior Captain's prize;

A "Three Club" competition in October, after a full Bucksfizz breakfast;

Away days to other clubs, instead of the usual Tuesday or Thursday Get-Together;

One and two night Golf Breaks, to other clubs in SE England and possibly NW France;

The Annual Dinner in December, when we entertain our partners.

Main Club activities also include:

5-day member and Senior competitions;

Bridge, Crib, Bowls & other social groups;

Race and Quiz nights, Theme evenings, etc.

All announcements, entry lists and notices concerning the running of the section are posted on the Seniors Notice Board adjacent to the external door of the locker room. To view a copy of the rules under which we operate see below.

We do hope you will join our club, make new friends and thoroughly enjoy your golf and social activities, especially with The Seniors.

1. Tuesday/Thursday Weekly "Get-Together" Rules

The following rules will apply, with effect from lst of January 2003 N.B. New/Modified Items 5, 6, 7 & 8

1. The draw for partners will take place at 7.50am in the Summer and at 8.20am in the Winter. Changeover dates will be posted on the Notice Board at the appropriate time.

2. Only those taking part in the above draw will compete for that morning's kitty.

3. For the purpose of the Captain's Prize, the qualifying period will be from the lst of March to the 30th of November annually. Every Tuesday and Thursday during that period will count as a qualifying round, provided 8 or more players have taken part, as defined in 1 and 2 above.

4. When some players simultaneously take part in a Club Medal, these players' Medal results will be improved by 2 strokes/points in order to determine that day's Tuesday/Thursday Club kitty winner.

5. The winner will receive 70% of the kitty and the runner-up 30%.

6. In the event of a tie, the kitty will be shared equally between all winners and each player will score 1 win towards the Captain's Prize. I.E. there will be no runner-up prize on that day.

7. A separate Tuesday/Thursday Club handicap system will be operated. When first taking part in these meetings, a player will start off using his club handicap. Immediately after each meeting, exact handicaps will be modified according to the table below. A full record of all meetings will be maintained in a Results Book. Players will be advised of their new exact handicap as results are entered into this book. It will be kept in the Pro's shop and can be consulted there. In the absence of any committee member, any player willing to do so can operate the system.

8. To avoid hold-ups, where a provisional ball was not played and a ball was subsequently discovered to be lost or out of bounds, it must be treated as follows :

(a) if lost within the boundary of the course, a ball should be dropped as close as possible to the centre of the search area and 2 penalty strokes taken.

(b) if out of bounds, a ball should be dropped at the nearest point of relief from where the ball was judged to have crossed the boundary of the course and 2 penalty strokes taken.

9. No putts should be conceded. Balls must be holed-out on every green, except where unable to score in a Stableford round.

10. All scores must be recorded and handed in. Failure to do so will disqualify the players concerned.
