Simon Walton scored level par in Division 2 to take top spot from ex naval seal Bobby Oot (No Greenpeace today!). VETERAN’s SECURE WINTER SCRAMBLE
A team of veteran’s led by Feltwell’s Monty Curtis secured the Winter Scramble (Combined age not yet to hand). Conditions were pretty dreadful but it was more wind affected as the rain only came in short squalls, still extremely unpleasant. Despite the conditions most teams managed to return Gross scores on or under par. Of the three top teams there were 6 vets and 2 juniors involved in the prizes, however it wasn’t a day for the dream teams as handicaps told in the end.

Tony Carpenter took Division 2 by 3 shots from “Big” Ade (Charles), both seeing their handicaps reduced by one shot apiece.

The Feltwell Ladies Open was played on Wednesday 1st July in lovely sunny conditions. Scoring was generally good and the results were close, with Mary Kierman, Gwen Rackley and Dawn Fincham from Eagles Golf Club pipping Jo Ashmore, June Meadows and Linda Asker from Barnham Broom Golf Club to first prize on the back nine scores after both teams finished level on 72 points. Robson Jun. knocks 2 shots off the Course record
Eighteen year old Christopher Robson equaled the new course record of 69, achieved by Lenny Hopkinson, recently. He lowered it by 2 shots in the recent Saturday medal shooting a gross 67 and carding three 2’s in the process! There were no blemishes on his card in his round of 13 pars and five birdies and speaks volumes for his current commitment to his game.
In most cases nett 67 would have been good enough to win most medals but veteran golfers Gerald Pearce and Fred Fitzpatrick finished 2nd and 3rd respectively behind the young gun, although both had their handicaps reduced as a result of their scoring..

EGU GOLD MEDAL/WSLO/SCRATCH
The May medal was the initial medal counting towards the aggregated WSLO/Scratch series; it was also combined with the EGU Gold Medal event that could result in the Feltwell winner winning an all-expenses paid trip to vie for the London Fuller’s Pride trophy at the world famous Bracken course in Woodhall Spa.
They used to say that bandits come from the East but on this occasion he rose from the South-West, although a local resident now Jason Sheldrick originated from Isleham who have a tradition of sporting success in both cricket and football; now golf is added to their credence. Jason shot a superb nett 62 off his previous handicap of 23 to win the EGU Gold Medal, a case of Fullers London Pride, the chance to represent Feltwell at Woodhall Spa and take a commanding lead in the WSLO table.
Christoper Robson continued on his match downward, in handicap terms by shaving 0.2 off his current 3, shooting the lowest gross, level par, of the day; oh to be young again!! Mally Smith was runner-up in that division. Alan Mahler won “another” medal with a 69 knocking Queen Adelaide’s finest, John Burford, into another bridesmaid position.

George Maidwell showed there is life in the old dog yet by romping to a nett 63 in the recent Saturday Medal. George’s 9 under par total was four shots better than the Market Gardener, Ray Peachey, who finished runner-up on 67 which any other day would have been good enough for the winners enclosure. Golden Oldies
Two of the senior members and in the higher handicap echelons stood at the top of the leader-board when the Frostbite trophy closed on Sunday 25th November. Keith Ginifer one of the stalwart veterans amassed 41 stableford points to take the title by a point from John Middleton beating “Mr Consistency” Lenny Hopkinson into 3rd place on count back. Maybe the Frostbite Trophy should be renamed the Global Warming Trophy as the weather for this event improves year on year, perhaps the scientists are right after all. Markiewicz won his third Div. 1 medal in as many months on Saturday when he shot a nett 68 off 9. Kevin has been up and down from 8 to 9 and back again over the last year and he has had his handicap cut again to 8 on the strength of his recent performance. Chris Robson is nearing the magical of 4 for the first time, his nett 70 off 5 saw another 0.1 shaved off his handicap to stand at an exact 4.7, Newmarket butcher John Brook, or snapper, to his friends, was again in the places with a respectable 71 off 10.

Winter League starts in Balmy conditions
The first round of the Feltwell Winter League got off to warmish start on Sunday, woolly hats, fleeces and mittens soon gave way to short sleeves and visors as the morning wore on and the scores reflected the conditions at the end of the day. The old contemptible Dave Smith teamed up with substitute Gerry McGarrity, deputising for Jon Green, and the veteran pairing belied their years to shoot 43 Better-ball points ahead of three younger pairings all on 42. Manels/Newell, Smith & Smith and Lyons/Sheward all shot 42, one shot shy of the first round winners.
Robin Davis won the Saturday Medal with a nett 69, one ahead of Chris Robson on 70 and 2 ahead of John Brook on 71. Chris is 0.3 points short of achieving his ambition in getting his handicap reduced to 4 and everyone at Feltwell Golf Club wishes him well for the future.

Hole in One for Gerald Pearce
Gerald Pearce one of the stalwarts of Feltwell Golf Club scored a hole in one on the short 11th during Sunday’s medal, this was duly witnessed by your correspondent and led to much levity from his playing partners and a little bonhomie at the 19th hole afterwards, congratulations is deserved for this feat.
Despite this “ace” it didn’t really add to Gerald’s score who finished the day on 73 off his newly acquired handicap of 10. Congratulations are also in order for Brandon’s friendly postie, Ryan Woods who has achieved single figure status for the first time. Ryan was amongst three players in Division 1 who recorded a nett 68, Nigel Smith finishing second on cb from Steve Dupe in 3rd spot. Veteran golfer and retired 50’s DJ John Burford proves there is life in old boys yet by shooting 5 under par to claim the Division 2 prize ahead of forester Paul McCreath who finished on level par. It was another of Feltwell’s old worthies Monty Curtis who took Division 3 with a nett 71, Monty was becoming the perennial bridesmaid in his division with 2 recent runners-up spots but he finally managed a top podium spot on Sunday, Brandon publican Allan Fraser on one of his occasional outings of the year was runner-up with a nett 76.
