Golden Oldies Two of the senior members and in the higher handicap echelons stood at the top of the leader-board when the Frostbite trophy closed on Sunday 25th November. Keith Ginifer one of the stalwart veterans amassed 41 stableford points to take the title by a point from John Middleton beating “Mr Consistency” Lenny Hopkinson into 3rd place on count back. Maybe the Frostbite Trophy should be renamed the Global Warming Trophy as the weather for this event improves year on year, perhaps the scientists are right after all. Markiewicz won his third Div. 1 medal in as many months on Saturday when he shot a nett 68 off 9. Kevin has been up and down from 8 to 9 and back again over the last year and he has had his handicap cut again to 8 on the strength of his recent performance. Chris Robson is nearing the magical of 4 for the first time, his nett 70 off 5 saw another 0.1 shaved off his handicap to stand at an exact 4.7, Newmarket butcher John Brook, or snapper, to his friends, was again in the places with a respectable 71 off 10.

Club President consolidates recent form Steve Taylor the Club President finally picked up a win that his recent form and regular playing partners were predicting. The high winds and threat of rain reduced the field but you still have to beat what is out there and Steve did it in style by finishing 3 in front of the field on 71. The soon-to-be veteran, Gerald Pearce finished runner-up on 74, with that man Markiewicz again in the frame finishing 3rd on 76.

Winter League starts in Balmy conditions The first round of the Feltwell Winter League got off to warmish start on Sunday, woolly hats, fleeces and mittens soon gave way to short sleeves and visors as the morning wore on and the scores reflected the conditions at the end of the day. The old contemptible Dave Smith teamed up with substitute Gerry McGarrity, deputising for Jon Green, and the veteran pairing belied their years to shoot 43 Better-ball points ahead of three younger pairings all on 42. Manels/Newell, Smith & Smith and Lyons/Sheward all shot 42, one shot shy of the first round winners.
Robin Davis won the Saturday Medal with a nett 69, one ahead of Chris Robson on 70 and 2 ahead of John Brook on 71. Chris is 0.3 points short of achieving his ambition in getting his handicap reduced to 4 and everyone at Feltwell Golf Club wishes him well for the future.

Hole in One for Gerald Pearce Gerald Pearce one of the stalwarts of Feltwell Golf Club scored a hole in one on the short 11th during Sunday’s medal, this was duly witnessed by your correspondent and led to much levity from his playing partners and a little bonhomie at the 19th hole afterwards, congratulations is deserved for this feat.
Despite this “ace” it didn’t really add to Gerald’s score who finished the day on 73 off his newly acquired handicap of 10. Congratulations are also in order for Brandon’s friendly postie, Ryan Woods who has achieved single figure status for the first time. Ryan was amongst three players in Division 1 who recorded a nett 68, Nigel Smith finishing second on cb from Steve Dupe in 3rd spot. Veteran golfer and retired 50’s DJ John Burford proves there is life in old boys yet by shooting 5 under par to claim the Division 2 prize ahead of forester Paul McCreath who finished on level par. It was another of Feltwell’s old worthies Monty Curtis who took Division 3 with a nett 71, Monty was becoming the perennial bridesmaid in his division with 2 recent runners-up spots but he finally managed a top podium spot on Sunday, Brandon publican Allan Fraser on one of his occasional outings of the year was runner-up with a nett 76.

The Fred Knott Competition was broken into 2 categories. 1st category for the juniors with handicaps and 2nd category for juniors without handicaps, our aim is to give the juniors without handicaps the experience of a real competition and at the same time give them the encouragement to go further.

“SHREK” WINS WSLO Lenny Hopkinson, affectionately dubbed Shrek by his playing partners, put in a storming shift during the last Sunday Medal to claim the WSLO trophy by 7 shots from young Nicky Oot, finishing on a nett score over 4 consecutive rounds of 281. Len shot a gross par off his 4 handicap, his four nett rounds being 74, 69, 70 and 68 which is extremely consistent golf in anybody’s money.
Although Len took the WSLO he was actually pipped for top medal place by Kevin Markiewicz who like Len shot a nett 68 but count back favoured Kevin pushing Len into second place. FELTWELL – VETERAN WINS JOHN MOIR Congratulations to veteran golfer David Horton who on Sunday won the John Moir Stableford beating relatively younger opposition into the minor places. Three golfers finished on 39 points but it was David who won it on count back from the amiable New Yorker Bob Oot who also secured his place on count back from Peter Jacobs. Chris Robson narrowly missed breaking the club record when he took the August Saturday Medal by 2 shots from the Silver Fox Bob Birch. Chris shot a superb gross 71 carding a nett 66 off his 5 handicap, a three putt on the last green robbing him of the course record. Bob carded a nett 68 for second and Lenny Hopkinson again featured in the prizes back on 69.
Young Dominic Shepherd-Barnes blitzed the course to win the Arrowpak Junior Championship with 47 points beating Deon Briston into second place by 13 shots. Also well done to Bayley Baker who made her debut into the world of junior competitive golf, she finished 4th on 26 points but looking at her swing, and with her father Jim as mentor, this young lady will do well so the boys better watch out in the next twelve months..

FELTWELL – CAPTAINS DAY Husband and Wife Christine & Malcolm Fuller are the current Captains of Feltwell’s Gents and Ladies sections and they departed from the norm this year by hosting a joint Captain’s Day on Saturday 21st July. The day started, in pretty dull conditions, with a gentle 9-hole scramble comprising teams of four. Colin Cooper’s team triumphed with 24 points beating Lenny Hopkinson’s four-ball on count back.
The afternoon round was a full stableford competition with separate competitions for the Gents and the Ladies. Jon Green ex-captain and ex president shot a superb gross 72 off his 6 handicap to take first prize with 42 points, Brandon postie Ryan Woods kept up his good form of late to steal second on count back with 40 points leaving Newmarket veteran Eric Papworth in third also on 40 points. Eric visited Scotland lately to play in the Pitlochry festival and received a lesson which has obviously contributed to his good play recently.
The ladies section was won by Julie Waters with 39 points leaving Maureen Horton in second on 29 points. There was a bit of thunder and lightning rolling round in the afternoon but none of it caused play to be suspended, the day was rounded off in the clubhouse with a Comedian, Disco and BBQ for members and their guests, in all 64 golfers enjoyed the day and a packed clubhouse danced well into the night.

Busy time at Feltwell Golf Club Hectic times at Feltwell Golf Club over the last week culminated in a rain interrupted Club Championship on Sunday 15th July. The WSLO/Scratch aggregate championships saw round #3 completed on Sunday 8th July, the monthly Saturday Medal was held on the Saturday before the annual 36-hole Club Championship.
Mr. Consistency, Lenny Hopkinson scored an excellent gross 75 to secure Division 1 of the July Sunday Medal beating Jim Baker of the USA on count back, Ryan Woods recent winner of the Malcolm Jones Trophy finished in third place on 71 also beating a host of players on count back. Gentle giant Martin Brockett succeeded in Division 2 shooting the best net score of the day of 69, John Brown was second on 71. Recently re-joined member Mark Allen triumphed in Division 3 with 73 beating young Jack Sheward in to second place, a position he has now occupied for the last two weeks on 74.
Very windy conditions on Saturday 14th blew most players off the course judging by the number of non-returns recorded, only 7 players out of the 29 entrants returning a score. Don Redpath, the only golfer under par, took first place by 5 shots from his playing partner on the day Frank Brown (75) with that man again Lenny Hopkinson third on 77.
With the leaders approaching the 30th hole of the day thunder and lightning rolled in at Feltwell this was soon joined by some exceptionally nasty heavy rain, inevitably the Klaxon was sounded to call the players off the course and delay the conclusion of the Club Championship by approx. 40 minutes. When the electrical activity rolled away the Klaxon sounded for resumption of play but only those in contention for the places in both Scratch and Handicap sections ventured back out on to the course. Chris Robson, Feltwell’s promising junior shot 75 in the morning to finish the first half stage 1 ahead of the 2006 champion Nick Oot and 4 ahead of the old pretender Lenny Hopkinson. Len managed a creditable 75 in the afternoon with Nick Oot, maybe upset by the rain delay, falling back with an uncharacteristic 82. In the meantime Chris consolidated his lead by shooting a fine 76 to take the trophy for the first time on a creditable 151 gross.

Medal Mania at Feltwell Due to the cancellation of the May Medal due to Myhill commitments and early diary date for the schedule June Saturday medal Feltwell golfers have been competing in a Medal bonanza in Early June. The Sunday medals for May thru September are also linked to aggregate competitions which are the WSLO Trophy (Handicap scores) and the Jim Baker Scratch Cup which obviously speaks for itself. The recent Saturday Medal which was played as one division was won by Adam Bland (23), second place was secured by the evergreen John Vale (23) and Feltwell’s very own Mr. Consistency, Len Hopkinson (5) took the 3rd prize. Round 2 of the WSLO/Scratch was secured on count back by, yes it’s that man again, Lenny Hopkinson (5) who shot a superb 74 edging out Nick Oot (5) on count back. Kevin Markiewicz went up to 10 on Saturday but shot a net 69 on Sunday to return back to 9, funny old game isn’t it. Barry Granger(19) is another man who had a see-saw weekend going up on Saturday but coming straight back down on Sunday by securing the Div. 2 prize with a net 69, Steve Mouncer (15) shot 70 to take second spot. Newmarket’s quality butcher Fred Fitzpatrick (21) won division 3 with a net 75 beating the improving junior Jack Sheward (27) into second place, Jack finished on a net 77. By winning the Sunday Medal Len also won the extra EGU Medal with a chance to represent Feltwell in the grand final which is to be held at Woodhall Spa. Presidents Putter, Saturday 16 June Steve Taylor the new President of Feltwell Golf Club hosted his first “putter” and despite stormy weather a good field managed to complete the 18 holes although there were some hairy moments due to thunder and lightning. Although Nick Oot didn’t win the competition he did manage 38 points and achieved his ambition of securing a handicap of 4, I think congratulations are in order here. John Brown makes a habit of popping up on the big days and this year’s event was no exception, 39 points with a card score of 23 on the back nine secured his name on the club honour boards as the 2007 winner, Bob Birch also scored 39 to finish second with Nick Oot finishing third. Christine Fuller, our Ladies Captain, won the ladies 1st prize with 35 points, second (on countback) was Linda Ball on 29 points and Jan Trollope was third on 29 points.

Feltwell Trophy The threatened torrential rain didn’t materialize as predicted on the Sunday of the May Bank Holiday; nevertheless the Feltwell Trophy was contested in fairly cold and dismal conditions. Lenny Hokinson despite bemoaning the comment to his playing partners, yours truly included, that low handicappers never win Stableford competitions landed the Feltwell Trophy with an excellent 39 points on count back. The old campaigner Gerald (Dobbie) Pearce was unlucky losing the back 9 to finish in runners-up spot on the same points total. Past Captain, but definitely not past-it Paul Filby secured 3rd with a commendable 37 points.

April Medals and Captains Drive In The new captain of Feltwell Golf Club Malcolm Fuller ushered in his year with his drive-in on an extremely windy Saturday at the end of March. The field was split into Men’s, Women’s and Vets sections and Daniel Hudson (13) recorded the best score of the day under the Stableford scoring system returning 38 points, it was heartening to note that a recently joined junior, Adam Parker son of Martin Parker returning 37 points to finish in runners-up spot. Newly elected Club President Steve Taylor finished 3rd on 36 points. Julie Waters won the women’s section returning 29 points beating Jan Trollope into second who returned 28 points. Bryan Parsons the Vets Secretary scored 35 points to take this section beating Keith Ginifer into second on 34 points. There was an excellent turn out of approx. 60 members for this event.
A good field of 64 members turned out for the Sunday Medal on April Fools Day and Cullington stalwart scored a superb 69 to take the Division 1 prize beating Feltwells up and coming star Christopher Robson into second place. The Division 2 prize was secured by the previous day’s winner by Daniel Hudson who recorded an excellent 66 off his 13 handicap, beating Adrian Charles into second who must have thought he would win this group, given the conditions, with his 67 returned in the morning. Lee Bland is starting to show improvement and his nett 71 secured the Division 3 prize, Andy Smyth finished in runners-up spot with a nett 76.
John Brook won the recent Saturday Medal on count back due to three nett 71’ s being recorded on the day, doughty competitor George Maidwell was placed second with Kevin Markiewicz taking third spot again on 71.

Rabbits & Rycroft The Rabbits (19-28 Category) had the better weather of the weekend, their more illustrious counterparts in the Rycroft (0-18 Category) getting blown off the course on Sunday, blasted by severe gales which worsened as the morning wore on. A good turn out of 65 golfers contested both events and seniority was the order of the day when the results were finally announced. Barry Granger (2), Mr. Consistency of late, accumulated 36 stableford points to get his name on the club trophy boards and secure the Rabbits cup, Graham King (19) finished on 35 with last years champion making a sterling effort to defend his title finishing on 34. Richard Bond, the Lakenheath beet farmer, who undoubtedly shortly will swap steel and polymer for willow and leather, secured the Rycroft for the second time in his career. Dick carded 32 points but given the weather this was an exceptional score and wasn’t bettered. Less than half the field finished 18 holes due to the conditions but a couple of old stalwarts, Kevin Markiewicz and Ron Kent, braved it out to finish in 2nd and 3rd places respectively.
