Golf News - Juniors
Dereham Golf Club’s junior members continued the 2012 season in sunshine and showers on bank holiday Monday, by playing for the Steve Jack Trophies, kindly sponsored by Berry & Co., Accountants in Dereham.
The competition saw some excellent scores at all levels. The Steve Jack Salver (best gross) was won by junior captain Lewis Bates (72-4-68), closely followed by Will Cross
(73-5-68) and Ryan Thorogood (77-6-71). The Steve Jack Cup (best net) was retained by James Hunt (93-26-67), second Max Jacobs (91-23-68) and third Liam Sewell (99-28-71). In the 9 holes competition Liam Kevern received an early 11th birthday present by winning the Steve Jack Trophy for the best gross score whilst the Steve Jack Memorial Trophy for the best net score went to Elliott Daniells. There was also a very close 5 holes competition which was won by Charlotte Chisholm, with Maisie Farrelly coming second. All the prizes were presented by Club Captain John Chaney.
The junior season continues with the Worthington Shield on Monday 4th June at 1pm.


On a bright but showery Sunday Dereham Golf Club’s junior members continued their 2012 season by playing for the Easter Trophy, kindly sponsored by Dereham Theatre Costumes. Simon Chisholm of Gressenhall Post Office & Stores donated an Easter egg for each player.
The 18 holes competition was very closely contested with over half the juniors playing to or under their handicap. Liam Sewell took his first 18 holes title with a net 68 (96-28-68), closely followed by Ryan Thorogood (75-5-70) and George Bedwell (86-16-70 ocb). The 9 holes competition was well supported with Matthew Goodman and Patrick Rimmer playing in their first competition at this level. The youngsters put up some fine scores with Morgan Blanks taking the honours (53-18-35), Liam Kevern a close second (52-16-36) and Matthew Goodman third (63-27-36 ocb). There was also a 5 holes competition which was easily won by Freya Biles who will now move up to the red tees; Charlotte Chisholm came second. The prizes were presented by Ladies President, Sheila Brightwell.
The junior season continues with the Steve Jack Trophies on Monday 7th May at 1pm.

Dereham Golf Club’s junior members continued the 2012 season in the sunshine by playing for the Scratch Cup and the Wiseman Trophy and at the same time supporting Sport Relief. Each competitor was asked to pay a bit more for their entry fee and to wear something silly.
The 18 holes competition saw some excellent scores with Nic Cains winning the Scratch Cup with a gross 75, Junior captain Lewis Bates was second on countback. The Wiseman Trophy saw George Bedwell winning his second competition of the weekend (82-17-65), having won the men’s medal the previous day; in second place was Frazer Chettleburgh with a net 69 (87-18-69). Liam Kevern won the 9 holes scratch competition and Harry Bush took the net prize. In the 5 holes competition Patrick Rimmer pipped Matthew Goodman winning by one shot.
All winners received salvers and pro’ shop vouchers which were sponsored by proceeds of a golf match played between Dereham Golf Club and Dereham Cricket Club last year.
The juniors along with help from some members raised a fantastic £80 for Sport Relief.
The junior season continues with the Easter Trophy on Sunday 15th April.

18 hole winners – Frazer Chettleburgh, George Bedwell, Nic Cains & Lewis Bates
K K Smith – In the first round of the 2012 K K Smith Trophy Dereham juniors drew title holders Middleton Hall away. Dereham’s team of Nic Cains, Lewis Bates, Ryan Thorogood and Alisha Margerum were not strong enough on the day to knock the holders out and lost 11 holes down.
Norfolk Schools Championship
Thursday 5th April saw 10 Dereham juniors entering the 17th Norfolk Schools Championship at Thetford Golf Club. With a field of 72 players there were some excellent scores including a gross 78 from Will Cross giving him the third best gross score overall. Alisha Margerum was edged out of the girls’ championship title by one shot having scored a gross 90 (90-16-74). In the Novice Champion Cup 10 year old Liam Kevern, entering his first away competition, was beaten on count-back having scored an excellent net 70. Congratulations to all Dereham juniors who played for putting up a great performance.

Dereham Golf Club’s junior members started the 2012 season in the sunshine by playing for the Valentine Trophies.
The 18 holes competition saw some excellent scores with Nic Cains taking the top prize with 41 points, followed by Sian Fenn-Green and Alisha Margerum on 38 points. All three received vouchers for the pro shop which were presented by President Dudley Mayers. In the 9 holes competition Liam Kevern pipped Immy Leeder at the post to take first place. Captain John Chaney presented Immy with a voucher and Liam with a shoe bag and salver. There was also a 5 holes competition in which new junior member Freya Biles made her mark, sharing first place with Charlotte Chisholm; Matthew Goodman was close behind for second. The Captain also presented their prizes which he had kindly donated.
Earlier in the month junior captain Lewis Bates and junior vice captain George Bedwell were presented with their polo shirts in the new junior team colours for 2012.
The junior season continues with the Scratch Cup and Wiseman Trophy on Sunday 25th March at 1pm.

Texas Scramble
The last Thursday in December saw six teams of adults & juniors end the year by playing a 9 hole Texas Scramble. In spite of the wet and windy weather players enjoyed their games and were greeted on their return to the Clubhouse with cups of hot chocolate. The winning team shot a gross 36 and was lead by junior committee member Colin Tucker along with Frazer Chettleburgh, Harry Bush and Liam Kevern. They were closely followed by Ryan Thorogood, Christine Joy, Hakan Tokbay and Charlotte Chisholm. Only 5 shots separated all six teams. The juniors commence their 2012 season with the Valentine Cups on Thursday 16th February.

At the beginning of half term Dereham Juniors finished their season in fine style and glorious sunshine by playing for the Alarming UK Ltd salvers, with good scores in both the 18 holes and 9 holes competitions.
In the 18 holes competition Nic Cains lead the field with net 69 (73-4-69). Close behind was Liam Cameron (82-12-70), third Will Cross (75-5-70 ocb) and fourth George Bedwell (88-18-70 ocb). They all received vouchers for the pro’ shop.
The 9 holes competition saw 6 youngsters battling away with the eventual winner being Morgan Blanks with Liam Kevern close second. They also received vouchers for the pro’ shop. In the 5 holes competition, the Autumn Cup was won by Patrick Rimmer with second place going to Charlotte Chisholm.
Following this final qualifier, Captain Kelvin Cleere and some of our sponsors made the annual presentation of cups and trophies (see photo). A packed clubhouse of dignitaries, parents and grandparents heard a report on the events of the year from Secretary Jane Bizley, followed by the announcement that the new Junior Captain would be Lewis Bates and his Vice Captain would be George Bedwell. The Junior Captain presented Jane with flowers, wine and a voucher for the pro’ shop and team manager Colin Tucker with two bottles of wine. The Captain congratulated all the juniors on their excellent achievements this season and thanked the junior committee for their hard work and dedication.
Junior members will now look forward to their annual Christmas party at Strikes on Saturday 10th December.

Dereham Golf Club’s junior members continued the 2011 season by playing for the Wallace Trophy and the Corroless Trophies.
The 18 holes competition saw junior captain Michael Watters take top spot with a net 68 (79-11-68), second was Nic Cains (74-5-69), third Max Jacobs (96-23-73). The Wallace Trophy was kindly sponsored by Michelle Blanks of Dereham Theatre Costumes at Rash’s Green.
The 9 holes competition, which is sponsored annually by Andrew Hunt of Corroless Eastern in Dereham, saw Harry Bush take the gross prize of the Corroless Shield and Immy Leeder winning her first competition taking the net prize of the Corroless Cup. Having moved up to the red tees Charlotte Chisholm continued her winning streak by winning the 5 holes competition.
Excellent scores from the younger players means Harry Bush and Liam Kevern will now move onto yellow tees. Thanks to Mr Hunts generosity all 9 holes players received a voucher for the pro shop. These were presented by seniors captain John Stroud.
The junior season finishes on Sunday 23rd October with the Alarming UK Ltd Salvers and the annual presentation of cups and trophies by the Captain.

Greensome Competitions
On Bank Holiday Monday Dereham Golf Club saw the annual adult/junior greensome competitions being competed for by 24 pairs. In the 18-hole Alec Porter Shield, 13 pairs played with the eventual winners being Jill Trudgill & James Hunt with a staggering 49 points off a combined handicap of 25. Richard Wilson & Will Cross playing off 4 took second place with an excellent 42 points; Paul & Nic Cains playing off 10 came third on countback with 41 points.
The 9-hole Bob Lees Trophies saw 11 pairs competing. The winners were father & son duo Derek & Liam Kevern with 27 points, closely followed by John & Immy Leeder 26 points. Stuart and Matthew Goodman took third place with 20 points.
Nearest the pin prizes went to John & Immy Leeder on the 3rd and Ryan Thorogood on the 8th. There was also a putting competition with prizes going to Liam Kevern, Michael Watters & Stuart Bizley.
After the competition GMC Chairman Stuart Bizley cooked a barbecue for players and their families. Presentations were made to all the winners by Ladies Vice Captain Maria Fox.
The season continues with the Wallace Trophy & Corroless Trophies on 11th September and closes on Sunday 23rd October with the Alarming UK salvers and presentation night.

Monday Club
Monday 22nd August saw Dereham juniors enjoying their last Monday Club of the season by playing a Texas Scramble played over 7 holes. The winning team was lead by junior committee member Catherine Newey and included Katie Egle, Charlotte Chisholm and George Bedwell. Monday Club is for junior members without handicaps giving them a chance to practise their golf on the course under adult supervision. Over the past 17 weeks there was only had one wet Monday and an average of 11 juniors attended each week.

Norfolk Boys County Championship
The Norfolk Boys County Championship, which attracted almost 100 competitors, was held in July at the Norfolk Golf and Country Club.
Dereham Golf Club was delighted when junior vice captain Lewis Bates, Nic Cains and Ryan Thorogood came home with the Junior Team Challenge Shield for the best scratch team. There were further celebrations as 13 year old Frazer Chettleburgh scooped up the Roper Cup, this being the under 18s handicap trophy. He shot a net 63 in the morning, followed by a net 69 in the afternoon, beating second placed Alex Thaxton of Middleton Hall by 7 shots.

Dereham Golf Club’s junior members continued the 2011 season by playing for the Scratch Cup and the Wiseman Trophy.
The 18 holes competition saw some excellent scores with Will Cross winning the Scratch Cup for the third year in succession, gross 73, second was Lewis Bates with a gross 76 who beat Nic Cains on count back. The Wiseman Trophy saw Josh Goodwins putting his new driver to good use by winning his first 18 holes competition with an amazing net 58
(86-28-58); in second place was James Hunt with a net 65 (93-28-65).
Morgan Blanks won the 9 holes competition and Charlotte Chisholm won the 5 holes competition. Following her excellent score of 30 she will now move from blue to red tees.
The junior season continues with the Alec Porter Shield and the Bob Lees Trophies on August bank holiday Monday.

Junior Open Report
August 5th saw 37 junior golfers play for the Rivett Trophy in the 23rd Dereham Junior Open. With competitors coming from all over Norfolk, plus twins from Newmarket and ex-Dereham junior Harriet Allsebrook travelling from Shropshire, the field produced some amazing scores. President Dudley Mayers started all the juniors off the first tee and helpers were situated around the course to help look for wayward balls.
At the end of a wonderful afternoon, and following tea, the Rivett Trophy was presented by Club Captain Kelvin Cleere to Costessey Park’s Samantha Darling who shot a fantastic net 57 (83-26-57); the scratch prize went to Royal Norwich junior Tom Clements, with a gross 71, playing off scratch. The day was very kindly sponsored by Smith & Pinching Insurance Brokers, who were represented by Kevin Pearson; The Captain and junior secretary Jane Bizley sponsored nearest the pin prizes. Kevin Pearson presented the prizes along side the Club Captain.
Other results were 2nd net Eleanor Brown, Barnham Broom, (92-26-66) 3rd Will Tang, Dereham, (78-11-67) 4th Alex Thaxton, Middleton Hall, (82-14-68). 2nd gross, Nic Cains, Dereham, 72, 3rd Will Cross, Dereham, 74, 4th Alex Fellas, Great Yarmouth & Caister, 75.
Longest drive prizes went to Will Cross & Sammy Darling. Nearest the pin prizes went to George Anthony, Barnham Broom and Frazer Chettleburgh, Dereham.

Cuddihy Cup and Silver Medal
Dereham Golf Club’s junior members continued the 2011 season by playing for the Cuddihy Cup & the Silver Medal.
The competition saw some excellent scores at all levels. The Cuddihy Cup, which is a new trophy donated by Brian Cuddihy of Dads & Lads, was won by Nic Cains with a gross 76, closely followed by Ryan Thorogood gross 77. The Silver Medal was won by Frazer Chettleburgh with a net 64 (91-27-64); Sian Fenn-Green was close behind on a net 66.
In the 9 holes competitions Hakan Tokbay stormed ahead with a gross 54 and Harry Bush took the net prize with net 33, second places went to Morgan Blanks and Callum Turner. The 5 holes competition was won by Matthew Goodman. Winners in all categories received salvers and pro’ shop vouchers kindly sponsored by Fenn Green Signs of Dereham.
The junior season continues on Monday 15th August.

Dereham Golf Club Junior Section Double Celebrations
Liam Cameron recently celebrated winning the 18-hole Larking Gowen Junior Championship at Dereham Golf Club, while Ryan Thorogood won the Captain’s Junior Prize competition, both of which were kindly sponsored by Larking Gowen, Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors and The Club Captain, Kelvin Cleere.
Sixteen year old Ryan was delighted to win the Captain’s Prize, which this year was also a claret jug, completing the course with a gross 69, playing off an 8 handicap. He was also presented with the Captain’s putter by Club Captain Kelvin Cleere. The Captain also presented pro’ shop vouchers to Lewis Bates and Will Cross who took second and third places in the gross competition.
Sixteen year old Liam led the field of 14 juniors and won with a gross 80, net 65. He was presented with the Larking Gowen claret jug by Chris Greeves, a partner with the firm. Mr. Greeves also presented pro’ shop vouchers to Frazer Chettleburgh (net 67) and Tom Newey (net 68) who took second and third places.
Also during the afternoon there was a 9-hole competition which was won by Morgan Blanks (gross prize) and Liam Kevern (net prize), plus 5 of our younger juniors took part in a 5-hole competition which was won by 10 year old Patrick Rimmer and newcomer Matthew Goodman coming a close second; they also received pro’ shop vouchers, also sponsored by Larking Gowen.
Following play there was also a putting competition for our younger juniors which was won by Liam Kevern.
“All the juniors performed well on what was the hottest day of the year so far, with some excellent scores from those in the prizes, both gross and net,” said junior secretary Jane Bizley.
“The day was fantastic, with 25 juniors participating in total. Everyone had a great afternoon. Once again we are most grateful to Larking Gowen for their support and sponsorship,” she added.

Worthington Trophy
Dereham Golf Club’s junior members continued the 2011 season on bank holiday Monday by playing for the Worthington Trophy, kindly sponsored by Dillington Hall PYO.
The competition saw some excellent scores at all levels. George Bedwell took the trophy with a net 65 (91-26-65), closely followed by Will Cross (74-8-66) and Nic Cains (73-6-67).
There was an extra prize sponsored by Big Fry, Dereham, for the best gross score which went to Nic Cains. In the 9 holes competition Morgan Blanks stormed ahead with a net 31, Liam Kevern took second place with a net 35. There was also a 5 holes competition which saw Maisie Farrelly win her first competition. Prizes were presented by GMC Chairman Stuart Bizley.
The junior season continues with the Captain’s Junior Prize & Larking Gowen Championship on Sunday 26th June at 1pm.
