DEREHAM GOLF CLUB SENIORS SECTION
The Seniors section has been in existence in one form or another for near on 20 years and has it's own Seniors Captain , Vice Captain and Secretary to run its affairs.
The "Seniors Day" is Monday. Players turn up around 7.45 to 8.00am on the morning, Summer and Winter, and play as far as possible as three balls, alternating between Medal and Stableford play in the Summer, and Stableford only during the winter months. When ready to play a ball is placed in the ball chute, and drawn out in threes. This method provides a variety of partners throughout the year. Additionally qualifying competitions off the white tees are run throughout the year to enable members to retain an active handicap if they cannot play in the main club qualifying competitions.
Away days are organised on an ad-hoc basis during the better weather, and novelty days such as 2 Clubs and a Putter type events are scheduled. Each winter there is a seasonal hat day and Christmas is celebrated with the Seniors Christmas Dinner in December - this year it is on Wednesday 16th December - when the members have the chance to wine and dine their better halves and witness the hand over of the Captaincy for the new season. Existing Captain, Ron Myhill, will hand over to new Captain Ron Bodimeade. Secretary Les Beecroft will continue in the post for his fifth year.
Starting this year Dereham and Wensum Valley played a Ryder Cup match at Ufford Park and plans are already fixed for a repeat challenge in 2010. Dereham will want to reverse their defeat this year which was mainly down to the pairs result on day one.
New members are encouraged to join in the Seniors activities and players are always wanted for the friendly matches irrespective of handicaps. These matches were initially set up "to provide retired gentlemen members with the opportunity to play competitive golf in their twilight years". As the Senior definition now starts at 55 years the twilight years reference is a little premature!
