HOLE IN ONE FOR CHRIS ON HIS SECOND DAY AT THE CLUB

Golfer Christopher Joy Joined Dereham Golf Club on Friday last week, and being a new member he needed to submit three cards to obtain his handicap. He submitted one card on the day he joined, this was followed by a second card on the Saturday when he played the shot of a life time on the 133 yard 3rd hole, Using an 8 Iron the ball pitched on the green some eight foot from the flag it rolled gently towards the hole and disappeared into the hole. The shot was witnessed by four golfers teeing off on the 13th hole who went into spontaneous applause. Needless to say Christopher 33 was amazed and couldn’t believe his luck, being only a casual golfer to achieve a hole in one on the second day of his membership.

GOLFER’S SEE YELLOW IN SOCIAL GOLF EVENT

Thirty six players enjoyed a yellow ball Competition in the 2nd of a series of summer evening social events which are held by Dereham Golf Club on the last Friday of each month. teams of four some consisting of all ladies some mixed and some gent’s played the nine hole competition, but all played from the gent’s yellow tee markers and from the men’s card. The competition was played in Stableford format with the ladies benefitting from two extra shots to compensate for the extra distance of the men’s card. The yellow ball was played by a different player each hole thus ensuring all players played the ball at least twice over the nine holes. The yellow ball attracted double points but if lost could not be replaced. Suffice to say all yellow balls were returned. The event was won with a brilliant 65 points achieved by Richard Wilson, Lewis Bates, Alex Bates and Club President Dudley Mayers. Second place went to the team of Peter Brightwell Sheila Brightwell, Jane Bizley and Stuart Bizley who amassed 62 points. Members and friend’s joined the players for a fish and chip supper in the club house after the event. Event Organisers Christine and Kevin Joy commented that the turnout of members for these kind of events on a Friday evening highlighted the support and strength of the membership The next social golf event will be at the end of July when it is proposed to Play the Course Backwards.

Former member Trevor Bunce who now plays at Richmond Park was in excellent form when playing as the invited guest of Dereham Golf Club Vice Captain Kevin Joy at the clubs annual men’s invitation day event. Trevor who plays off a 23 handicap which was reduced to 20 for this event played consistently and he and his partner Joy who was playing off 9 for the event amassed 45 stableford points from the better ball format. The Highlight of the day came for Trevor on the 302 yard par 4 tenth where playing from the white tee’s he commented that in all the time he had played the hole when he was a member he had never hit the ball so far, he then pitched the ball to within a foot of the hole for an easy birdy three. The men’s Mail on Sunday team played their fourth round match at Thetford on Friday and won 3-2 whilst the ladies defended the Gillieson Cup with a home win of 2-1.

The junior committee organised a rules evening which was open to all Club members. Those attending watched a DVD from the R & A showing what should and should not be done whilst playing. DAILY MAIL RESULTS

On a very wet and windy Sunday 4th March, the Dereham men’s team played away in the second round of the Mail on Sunday to Royal Cromer and the ladies Daily Mail Foursomes pair played their first round match away at Hunstanton.

The men had a successful day beating Royal Cromer 3-2, the results were as follows:

Richard Wilson won 6 & 4
Simon Chaney won 1 up
Will Cross won 4 & 2
Alex Bates lost 5 & 3
Ryan Thorogood lost 7 & 5

This is a great result for the Club as it is the first time we have progressed to the third round for many years.

Unfortunately our ladies, Heather Clements and Julie Bray, did not have such a good day.

Whilst receiving 5 shots they lost their match 4 & 2 but in spite of the poor conditions had an enjoyable game. Considering that Heather and Julie were not the winners of our qualifying competition, the Autumn Foursomes, they put up a good fight; thank you for representing Dereham ladies.

December Delights at Dereham Golf Club

December at Dereham Golf Club got off to a great start with 16 teams playing in the annual Turkey Trot. There were prizes for many teams and a festive tea for all. The winning team were organisers Ron Myhill and Ray Wicks along with team members Heather Clements and George Bedwell.

The following night President Dudley Mayers chaired the 77th Annual General Meeting. The Captain and Ladies Captain gave reports on their Captains’ year and Stuart Bizley, GMC Chairman, presented the accounts. After the formalities several players were presented with their hole-in-one trophies, the youngest recipient being 14 year-old Frazer Chettleburgh (see pic). Outgoing Captain Kelvin Cleere was presented with his Past Captain’s tie before handing over the reigns to John Chaney. John’s vice-captain will be Kevin Joy. The Ladies Captain for the coming year is Maria Fox and Ladies President Sheila Brightwell.

The juniors enjoyed their annual 10-pin bowling Christmas party at Strikes in Dereham. 28 players made up 6 teams. Junior committee member Colin Tucker brought home the winning side (see pic) before all players sat down to a burger & chips tea.

Junior secretary Jane Bizley quickly changed her bowling shoes to organise this year’s Christmas bingo at the golf club. The evening was well supported with players winning a great selection of Christmas fare. Ladies Captain Maria Fox announced that just over £120 had been raised and this would be split between the Captains’ charities for 2012, Cystic Fibrosis & Shelter.

The next event was the ladies Christmas lunch which was attended by many current and past members. Ladies enjoyed a traditional Christmas meal followed by a couple of songs from the Ladies Captain and past Ladies Captain Helen Howe. Those attending had been asked to bring gifts of food to make a food parcel for the Salvation Army rather than having a Santa sack this year. Ladies Captain Maria said she was overwhelmed with how much had been donated and thanked everyone for their contributions. Father Christmas (alias professional Duncan Abbott) still made a visit to the ladies which caused much amusement.

More recently members enjoyed the annual pantomime co-produced by Charles Passant and Dick Wingate. This year we were treated to Alice goes to the Olympics. Once again we were entertained with ditties and rhymes very cleverly written. As usual the cast was headed by Roger Burrage as Alice and Helen Burrage as the red queen. The Captain, Ladies Captain and the two Vice-Captains along with others made up the cast of Wonderland characters (see pic). During the evening members also enjoyed carol singing, a finger buffet and the Christmas draw.

To finish the month off members can look forward to the professionals Christmas draw at 12 noon on Christmas Eve, the juniors have a Texas scramble and there is a New Years Eve party for members with live music.

October has proved to be a very busy month for Dereham Golf Club.

President Dudley Mayers held his President’s night where several cups and trophies were presented. 19 year old Alex Bates won the Presidents Cup (see photo) beating Derek Kevern 2 & 1 in the final. Alex and his Mum Kay were also presented with the Warren mixed knockout trophies. In the Presidents Stableford Terry Weller beat Andy Farrelly on countback with 41 points. Over 50 members enjoyed a two-course meal followed by live music during the evening.

In Scotland Helen Burrage and Pam Kaye (see photo) were playing for the Daily Mail Foursomes title having made it through to the last 16 pairs. Their practice round on the Sunday was played and enjoyed in fine weather however the first round on Monday was abandoned after 5 holes due to flooded greens and fairways and high winds. The Tuesday saw a change of format and 18 holes Stableford was played which saw the Dereham ladies finish 5th on 26 points. Pam Kaye said whilst the weather conditions were not great the experience of playing at Dalmahoy and the hospitality shown over the three days was well worth the trip.

The Greenkeepers took their revenge on members and set up the course with hidden holes, tractors and trailers dubiously positioned around along with other obstacles to cause problems to those playing. Not to be phased were junior members Jamie Beeby and Nic Cains who took first and second places with 39 and 38 points respectively.

Dereham’s professional Duncan Abbott organised the first of this season’s winter alliance competitions with 20 pairs taking part. The winners were Lewis Bates and Graham Baker. Lewis Bates was also in the prizes the following day when he and his partner Richard Wilson won the final of the 2011 Captain/Pro challenge.

Anyone interested in playing the Dereham winter alliance should contact Duncan on 01362 695631. The next alliance day is Friday 25th November.
