Suffolk Golf & Spa Hotel is the home of one of the historical Suffolk town of Bury St Edmunds three Golf Clubs, the other two are Bury St Edmunds Golf Club and Flempton Golf Club.
This is the only one that can boast a hotel and spa.
The Suffolk is a proprietary club which has had a chequered past under various owners from Japanese owners in the early 80s to the former newspaper owner Eddie Shah. Known under various names originally as Lark Valley Golf Club, Fornham Park Golf Club, The Suffolk and latterly The Suffolk Golf & Spa Hotel under the ownership of Oxford Hotels & Inns and is now under new management again.
The Genevieve course is a PGA accredited championship course, The Course is set in the lowland valley of the River Lark and when you play this course you should always stock up with plenty of balls. The River Lark prominently meanders throughout the course, with it’s many tributaries and ponds featuring heavily in the course layout.
Water features on virtually every hole somewhere.
I once played with a guy who topped a shot off the tee and took out one of the local Ducks and he cried for the rest of the round. No birdie jokes here though.
The Course plays a full 6392 yards from the back tees it is a Par 72 with a standard scratch of 70. The Stroke Index one hole 16th is a brute at 480 yards. Due to the courses low lying situation you rarely get a lot of fairway run and the course seems to always play its full distance. Good course management, unflinching accuracy and excellent club selection are the premium attributes required to succeed on the Genevieve course but even then I feel sure you will lose a ball or two. look out for the sweet smell of Pickle as the course backs on to the local factory.
Visitors are welcome at The Suffolk Golf & Country Club 7 days a week, including bank holidays.
The Club has an excellent Clubhouse and with the Hotel at the centre of the club activity catering facilities are available from 7am to 11.pm with food available from early morning until 2.30pm and again from 6pm to 9pm. Special group and society booking will be catered for with food service throughout the entire day when ordered in advance.
Our view - definitely an experience.
