At 5930 yards from the white tees Haverhill Golf Club is one of the shortest 18 hole courses in Suffolk just ahead of Brett Vale, West Suffolk and Seckford.

For the past 18 years we have been going to Haverhill. Originally a 9-hole course it was transformed into its current 18 holes around the turn of the Millennium and did receive grants and lottery funding which helped toward improving the facilities. The course, lying across two valleys, is set in pleasant parkland on the Suffolk/Essex border with views across rural Suffolk and Essex it is a popular summer venue for visiting clubs and societies. The front and back nine are bisected by the River Stour as it meanders through the golf course

A parkland course the front 9 holes are in the main still relatively new whereas some of the low lying holes on back nine are the more mature original holes. Having hosted many events at the club over the years the feedback has always been good with good greens and well-manicured fairways. However, I was surprised and somewhat disappointed when I played in a recent event at the club in September 2017 where the greens where very very slow and the back nine was quite damp with little run. Difficult to describe really but the ground was a little dull. It was indicative that we were actually playing preferred lies in September.

It is a gentle start from the first with a short dogleg par four where you can either knock a medium iron to the corner leaving an easy shot in to a fair sized green or you can take a big gamble a smack a driver across the corner and be very close to the green. There are a number of holes that I like at Haverhill but I really dislike the third hole on the new part of the course the tee is up high playing across a gully with the narrow fairway rising up quite a steep gradient to the green unless you hid a good drive you are left with a blind 2nd shot. I have never played this hole well. Water does play a part in the later part of the round with some challenging holes.

The club house is not huge but the bar and catering staff are very friendly and welcoming. If you haven’t played the course before it is worth trying it out, not a classic but some interesting holes.
