It had been 10 years since we last visited the golf course and Club at Halesworth and what a surprising improvement at the club. Playing with a large group of past Captains of various clubs from across the County we played 9 holes on the well maintained and challenging Valley Academy par 33 9- hole course in the morning and the afternoon round on the 18 hole Blyth Championship Course.

Both courses are set in the spectacular Suffolk countryside close to the famous Heritage Suffolk Coast.

The 9 hole course is a true challenge with good well maintained but tricky greens, I hit a 4 iron and wedge into the green on both of the opening two holes. A long drive would have got me in trouble. The fourth hole is the toughest one on this course very narrow approach with out of bounds on the left hand-side. A couple of longer par 4’s on the later holes provided us with very enjoyable experience. One of my playing partners showed how it should be played, playing off 7 handicap, he only needed 29 shots to complete the 9 Holes. It must be said that that is no way a reflection on the course, he really did play out of his skin and was way ahead of the nearest rival.

Following a smashing lunch of Sandwiches and Chips plus a pint of Adnams finest we took on the Championship 18 hole course. Excellent condition, tidy, well kept bunkers and challenging holes very different to the 9 hole in that the greens are huge but also in great condition and very tricky. At 6523 yards from the back tees this par 72 is a real “Golf Course Challenge”.

It is also forgiving for the higher handicapper and the club welcomes all standards of player from the beginner to the Pro.

The course is set in nearly 200 acres and there are a few holes that Green to the next tee is quite a way but the latest owners of the Course have made a great effort and the club is now getting great praise from everyone that visits.

Following our round we were treated to a great meal of Steak pie & Mash and Apple Pie & Custard. The Staff were excellent as friendly as you will find.

With a ten bay floodlit driving range and great practice facilities this club is well worth a visit and is now competing very well with some of the great East Anglian golf clubs.
