Bungay & Waveney Valley Golf Course is situated on public land at Bungay Common, just outside the town.
Bungay & Waveney Golf Club had always been a favourite course of mine regularly playing there in various societies and matches over more than 30 years. The course is easy on the legs, pretty flat and not particularly challenging. The holes are not overly long and ideal for golfer who is getting older and losing distance or for someone that is new to the game. There are a few blind holes that I do not like but this is balanced out by some very good holes. To me it seems wrong to start on a hole that you can’t see the green but the first at Bungay is one of those, slightly up hill playing only 322 yards from the White Tee, an average tee shot will give you a good view of the green.
The greens are normally in very good condition as the course drains very well they tend to be a good pace and are good sized greens all the way round. The second green is shared with the twelfth. There is a part of the course at the 9th hole where you are initially required to hit a blind shot and you cross over the 12th hole, I have always thought for the sake of “Health & Safety” that they ought to have some traffic lights around this busy junction. The 10th green is a challenge with a slope from the club house to the 11th tee. There is a good practice ground which in my experience is subject at time to time to an overflow from the River Waveney surrounds the course in the shape of a horse shoe.
The clubhouse was extended a few years ago with a conservatory which has given much needed space for dining.
