The Alston Quiz

THIS ALSTON IS A WINNER!

The Alston Quiz night proved to be an outstanding success, with Kay Hircock presenting the questions with her usual flair and 24 teams of four diligently exercising every brain cell to deliver the answers. Joe Alston was a well respected member of BPGC and not only was the quiz named in his honour, but the winners also bore his name. The Alston Team with Brendan and his 3 team mates successfully beat off all comers to keep the trophy within the family.

It was particularly rewarding to see the club so full, the result of sterling work by the Social Committee and, no doubt influenced by the draw prize of £450. Alas, all good things must come to an end as this tempting prize was won at last, by Richard Vaughan, a deserving reward for all his endeavours with the club over the years. Poor organisation by the Chairman of the H&S Committee resulted in there being no camera available to capture all these events, but by resorting to a cheap and cheerful mobile phone camera, the following shots of deliriously happy patrons were eventually recorded for posterity.

Our next scintillating social extravaganza will be the Captains Roll Up on 11th May The draw will be starting again at £100 and golf will be a 9 hole par 3 competition using the main greens but from forward tee positions of varied lengths on the front nine . Play will be from 4pm till 6pm, following which, the restaurant will be open. Come join us in an entertaining evening of sporting endeavour, relaxed good company and appetizing fare!

PUB GAMES NIGHT

PUB GAMES NIGHT PROVES VERY POPULAR

Over 100 Burghley members turned out for the second and very popular pub games night on Feb 24. There was everything from pick up sticks in the TV lounge area to darts in the Spike Bar where some of the ladies were strong contesters-a sign of misspent youth I think Maryon. Some of the most popular games were Giant Jenga-a firm favourite with Elspeth and ‘Guess Who’ played quite intensely by the men for over an hour before going for more refreshments. Marie tried her hand at carpet bowls, several times, whilst John Hale fancied he had better chances pinning the tail on the donkey-not true John. A great night for all, and many thanks go once again to Julie Emmins of House and Social Committee for putting the whole thing together for us.

All Change at New Year

All change at Burghley Park

Over 130 members and guests attended Burghley Park’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, enjoying dinner and dancing into the small hours of 2012.

The club’s new Captains for 2012 were installed during the evening, and followed Burghley tradition by driving in after the midnight celebrations against a display of fireworks. Outgoing Captain Keith Duff welcomed new Club Captain Brian Churchill, and new Ladies’ Captain Jan Devlin, along with new Vice-Captains Richard Gilbert and Pat Harris, and new Seniors Captain Bob Parker

Casino night at the club.....

Casino Night came to Burghley once again this March with over 50 people joining in. The entry fee included a buffet and 500 chips which kept most people occupied all evening. There was the choice of roulette or Black Jack with a playoff for the top six gamblers who won the most chips towards the end of the evening.

The winner of the evening’s gambling was clearly an educated, experienced gambler, Bill Glencross. Carole Hollman’s guest and neighbour Barbara! She went on to bag 2nd place in the playoff too. The top six in the playoff were Roger Teasdale (6th ) who left his wife to drink alone all night, Judy Cade (5th) who split from Charles at this point to make her own way very successfully, Charles Cade (4th) who only just beat his wife , Mike Crook ( 3rd), Barbara Newell that lady from next door again (2nd) and Bill who ran off with the champagne and 1st place overall.

Thanks to all for making it such a fun night, we hope to see you again soon for the next House and Social Extravaganza.
