Winter League update...

Winter League crunch-time at Burghley Park

The recent spell of good weather has ensured that the league phase of Burghley Park’s Men’s’ Winter League progresses on schedule, with just 2 rounds remaining. Competition continues to be fierce, with virtually all of the knockout phase places still being up for grabs. The top 2 teams in each of the 4 leagues go through, but only one team (Clive Knox and Paul Szymanski) have booked their place so far, ensuring that the last few weeks of the league phase will remain challenging.

In League A, Knox & Szymanski’s 13 points to date ensure that they will finish in the top two, with Tom Hutton & Greg Dunn currently in 2nd spot with 9 points. They will tussle with Dan Carr & Doug Watterson, Richard Cook & Richard Gilbert, and Mark Yarham & Joe Carr (all on 6 points) for the other Quarter-final spot. In League B, Stuart Ward & Jon Tyrrell lead on 12, with Dean Vaughan & Matt Lem on 10, leading Graham Camp & Tony Goodwin (also on 10) on countback. Jason Clark & Craig Matthews, Terry Austin & Peter Barnes, and Stuart Pringle & Andy Vaughan are still in the mix, but need results to go their way.

Javan Argent & David Jackson (on 12) lead League C on countback from Alex Cole & Dave Millichip, with Paul York & Paul Redfern and Barry Dawson & James Bust on 9. It looks like the qualifiers will come from these teams. In League D, Gary Harrison & Dave Marsden (on 13) and Richard Vaughan & George Beadle (on 12) look to have things sewn up, with Richard Allen & Paul Ramm (on 7) and John Mayman & Paul Wilkinson (also 7) having their work cut out to make the cut

Burghley Park Seniors

Seniors start 2012 in style

Burghley Park Seniors’ Captain for 2012, Bob Parker, hosted the first event of his captaincy on Monday, supported by his incoming Vice-Captain Peter Hickman. Nearly 70 members welcomed him into office at a 3-Club competition over 9 holes, organised by Ian Roberts and Isobel Reading, and with special refreshments supplied by Terry Wheatley to celebrate a major birthday. Scoring was good, causing several players to wonder why they bothered carrying so many clubs normally, when they could score just as well with only 3 and a putter! Mollie Plowright took the Ladies prize with 19 points, from Liz Jones on 16, whilst in the Men’s section new Club Vice-captain Richard Gilbert prevailed with 20 points, from Martin Reynolds and Bill Purchase on 18 who were inseparable on countback. It was a good day for Reynolds, who also went home with the prize for the individual Men’s knockout for 2011.

Seniors Captain Bob Parker announced that he had been successful with securing sponsorship for the Seniors Open in June, from Marlow Gardiner & Cooke insurance brokers of Peterborough, which would provide substantial cash prizes for a Hole in One on all the Par 3 holes at Burghley. His charity for the year would be the Lincolnshire Air Ambulance Service.

New Captain's at Burghley

All change at Burghley Park for 2012

Over 130 members and guests attended Burghley Park’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, enjoying dinner and dancing into the small hours of 2012.

The club’s new Captains for 2012 were installed during the evening, and followed Burghley tradition by driving in after the midnight celebrations. Outgoing Captain Keith Duff welcomed new Club Captain Brian Churchill, and new Ladies’ Captain Jan Devlin, along with new Vice-Captains Richard Gilbert and Pat Harris, and new Seniors Captain Bob Parker.

The following morning saw the annual New Year’s Day Texas Scramble, with 76 members (19 teams) braving the early 9am start, and working up a good appetite for the traditional New Year Breakfast which followed. Scoring was good and competition was keen, on an almost balmy January morning. Prizes were presented by new Club Captain Brian Churchill, officiating at the first event of his Captain’s year. The winners were the team of Gary Lang-Norris, John Hughes, Ian Clark and Sid Bowers with a score of 56.3, beating Andy Vaughan, Adam Vaughan, James Vaughan and Matt Lem (56.7) into second place. Third spot was decided on countback, with Dave Lennie, Chris Quinn, Francis Williams and Paul York (56.8) taking the final placing.

Rugby Legend...

Rugby legend at Burghley Park Golf Club

Ex-England Rugby Union legend Jeff Probyn excelled as the after-dinner speaker at Burghley Park Golf Club’s annual Captain’s Dinner last Friday. Probyn, who was capped 37 times for England between 1987 and 1993, and was once voted the best prop in the World, entertained nearly 100 members and guests. Club Captain Keith Duff, who hosted the dinner, said “Jeff was a great speaker. He delighted the audience with his tales of life as an international rugby player, and through his willingness to continue his stories in the bar afterwards. It was a memorable evening.”

The club have long had a close relationship with RAF Wittering, and the Captain’s other guest was Wing Commander Ian Reynolds from the base. During the evening a charity draw took place, raising £425 for Wittering’s main charity, Anna’s Hope, which the base has dedicated to the memory of Senior Aircraftman James Smart, who died on active service this summer.

The Captain’s other guests were past Midlands Golf Union and Lincolnshire Golf Union President John Price, a long standing Burghley member, and club stalwart Howard Mulligan who, after retiring as long-serving Club Secretary a few years ago, has continued to contribute greatly to the service of the club through support of the Competitions Committee.

The vote of thanks was given by Bob Emmins, a supporter of Northampton Saints, who recalled that he, like Jeff Probyn, had played regularly for Wasps in his younger days, but for the 7th team rather than the Firsts!
