Beccles v Bungay Match Report

Tuesday 15th May Beccles Golf Club paid host to Bungay Golf Club in the 1st of the friendly home and away matches. Due to the bad weather and threat of thunder storms Beccles Captain Sam Cooper decided to change the format slightly and have a shotgun start from 3 tees, which was welcomed by all players.

As in the past the game was very tight and everyone played out their matches to completion. Returning to the Clubhouse to dry off the teams sat down to dinner. Once the Captains speeches were completed visiting Bungay Captain Steve Wright announced the result and as all the matches were so close, the overall result was an honourable draw. Steve thanked Sam and the Beccles Team for their hospitality, the greenkeeper and the ladies for a superb meal.

Saturday 12th May, the Elsie Pulford Cup was played for, 18 entered and enjoyed a dry competition for a change. 3rd Vice Captain Paul Segust 82-16-66, 2nd Edd Bowels 74-08-66 and winning with 77-15-62 Steve Driver.

Captain Bob Janney thanked Willie and Sam for preparing the greens, Ann for the refreshments and Ron for running the bar. Bob wished Ladies Captain Sam Cooper and Team best wishes for the 1st of the matches against Bungay on Tuesday and also to Ladies Vice Captain Jula Janney and the Ladies Team good luck for their competition on Friday.

Sunday 13th was a Medal Competition a small field took part, again some good scores were shot, 3rd place was in form member Steve Driver 83-14-69, 2nd Edd Bowles 77-8-69 and winning David Neech 85-19-66.

Saturday 19th May will be the David Downing Cup and Sunday 20th the Tolly Team are at home to Rushmere.

A BUSY WEEK BUT RAIN SPOILS SUNDAY GOLF

 

Thursday 26th April Seniors Captain Ron Walding along with his Brother and Club Secretary Ray Walding travelled to Burnham-on-Crouch to take part in the Senior National Pairs Knockout. In blustery wet conditions Ron & Ray managed to defeat their opposition on their home course winning 5 & 4. The pair are now waiting to find out who they will face in the next round.

Saturday 28th was the Lillian Allen Cup Order of Merit Competition, in very wet conditions one temporary green was in play. 14 hardy soles including 3 new members playing for their cards. Some good scores were shot with 3rd going to Vice Captain Paul Segust 83-16-67, 2nd Alan Ereira 75-11-64 and winning with a very good score Keith Pickering 72-12-60.

Captain Bob Janney thanked Willie and Sam for preparing the greens, Ron for the hot refreshments and Lillian Allen for her continued support and presenting the trophy to Keith Pickering.


Sunday 29th should have been the David & Rhona Neech Mixed Doubles, but due to the adverse weather was cancelled on the Saturday night.


Saturday 5th May will be the Piccadily Putter OOM and Sunday 6th is Junior Coaching from 10.00-11.00am with places still available. On Saturday 12th May Elsie Pulford Cup OOM & Sunday 13th is the Sunday Medal OOM.

Wednesday 18th April saw the Junior Members take the honour for the Wednesday Club Competition, 1st place winning on Countback Keiran Bale 20pts, 2nd also with 20pts Matt Hunter and 3rd place went to David Neech18pts.


James Redpath and Paul Cook took part in the International Seniors Pairs Friday 27th and took the match to the last and lost to their opponents on the 18th who 'Birdied' for the win.


Saturday 21st April the Club played the Billy Wood Trophy, a large field took part in a well supported Stableford competition. Some very high scores were shot with 6 players playing to par or better. Four players tied for 3rd place on 38 points but winning on countback was Keith Pickering, 2nd Scott Manthorpe 44points and winning with 45 points Ben Cable. Club Captain Bob Janney thanked Willie and Sam for preparing the greens, Ron for running the bar and Nicky for the refreshments. He also thanked Peter and Carol for their continued sponsorship of the competition.


Sunday 22nd saw Ron Walding, Ray Walding, Bob Janney and Jim Redpath take part in the National Seniors Club Classic competition at home to Chelmsford. With the weather changing from hour to hour from sun to rain and hail, Beccles managed a home win 2 1/2 to 1 1/2. Seniors Captain Ron Walding thanked his team for a brilliant home win and is looking forward to the next round.

Beccles busy week as season gets going

Wednesday 11th saw the 1st of the Wednesday League nights which tee's off between 3.00-6.00pm for members and non-members. The first winner was one of the Club's Junior's Jack Hammond with 25pts, 2nd went to another Club Junior Matt Hunter and 3rd place was David Chipperfield.

On Thursday 12th Beccles Seniors hosted Thorpeness in the Beaumont County Knockout Competition. With home draws always an advantage the Seniors Captain made some great pairing selections and the team finished the day with a win of 6 holes. Seniors Captain Ron Walding thanked Sam Cooper the Ladies Captain for preparing the greens and the tee boxes, Shirley for the buffet that followed and thanked the Thorpeness Captain and his team for a very enjoyable and competitive match.


Saturday 14th Club members played for the A.D Willows Shield, after a frosty start the players enjoyed a clear fine morning. 2 junior members played alongside the main competition and off the white tees both Jack Hammond and Keiran Bale held their own, scoring 33 and 47 respectively. The main competition was very closely fought with players trying to impress the Club Captain and show other Club members why they were representing the Club in the up and coming Tolly Competition. 3rd place with 37pts Derek Bickers, 2nd Kevin Ayers 40pts and winning with 41pts Club Captain Bob Janney.


Sunday 15th past Captain James Cushing held the James Cushing Cup for the coveted grey jacket. A large mixed field of Ladies and Men took part and enjoyed the many opportunities of prizes up for grabs. Longest drive on 9/18 was won by Keith Pickering, nearest the pin on 2/11 was won by the Seniors Captain Ron Walding, nearest the pin on 1/10 was President George Savill and nearest the pin on 8/17 was won by David Neech pipping his wife Rhona. The main competition was very close with the top 4 players being within 3 points. 4th Ben Cable 39pts, 3rd Steve Driver 40pts, 2nd Ben Debenham 41pts and winning with 42pts Keith Pickering.

Easter Weekend Golf....

Saturday 7th April saw a full complement turn out to play in the Harry Ayers Trophy, in wet blustery conditions a few players excelled and shot some very good scores. With the Competition Scratch Score going to 66, the winner received a deserved handicap cut of 2.8. 4th place losing on countback was Ben Debenham 86-20-66, Club President George Savill 81-15-66, 2nd Del Collyer 81-15-65 and continuing his good form 1st position went to Nick Hope 84-24-60.


Captain Bob Janney thanked Willie and Sam for preparing the greens, Shirley for the refreshments and Ron for running the bar. Bob also wished the Seniors Team good luck for their up and coming Beaumont Competition on Thursday 12th which is at home to Thorpeness
.


This weekend see the A.D.Willows Shield on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th is the James Cushing Cup.

Reduced field but great score....

 

Saturday 31st March saw a greatly reduced field due to several Club members celebrating two birthdays and having a weekend away. The 13 members that took part in the qualifing stableford competition made the most of the smaller field and shot some very reasonable scores.


Standing in for the Captain, Competition Secretary Willie White thanked those members that supported the competition, Sam for helping with the greens, Shirley for the refreshments and Ron for manning the bar.


3rd went to Derek Bickers with 36pts, 2nd Brian Lever 37pts and winning Nick Hope with 39pts. Willie also congratulated Secretary Ray Walding and Seniors Captain Ron Walding for finishing 3rd in the Suffolk Golf Union Secretaries-Managers/Captains Competition and AGM held at Finn Valley.


Saturday 7th April is the first of the Order of Merit Competitions the Harry Ayers Trophy and Sunday 8th see's the start of the Junior Coaching sessions 10.00-11.00am

Hembling Cup
Saturday 24th March a large field played for the Hembling Cup. With the fog lifting a bright sunny day was enjoyed by all the players. Scores were reasonably high through the field. In 3rd beating Captain Bob Janney, David Wells 38pts, 2nd Edd Bowles 39pts and winning with 40pts Chris Peach.

Captain Bob Janney thanked Ron, Rod, Jim, David and Mike for their work on the tee boxes during the week. Willie and Sam for swishing the greens and Nicky for the refreshments.

Another Busy Weekend..........

BUSY WEEKEND AT BECCLES

 

Saturday 17th March had a slightly reduced field due to some Club Members playing at Gorleston in the 2nd round of the Sunday Mail knockout Competition. In some really bad conditions and heavy down pours scoring was quite low. Luckily for Willie and Sam who wipped the greens before play started they enjoyed the best part of the day.
Club President George Savill came in with 35 points taking 3rd place, 2nd David Wells 35 points and winning with 35 points Paul Segust.


Saturday afternoon 5 members Edd Bowles, Niall Gill, Ben Cable Alan Ereira and Brian Lever went to Gorleston for the 2nd round of the Mail on Sunday knockout Competition and finishing all square on the 18th, 8 extra holes had to be played, unfortunately for Beccles the home advantage played a part and Beccles were knocked out.


Sunday 18th March, a few hardy souls took part in the Medal Competition, with a few of the greens holding some water putting was extremely difficult. 3rd place went to Chris Peach 81-12-69, 2nd Steve Driver 85-16-69 and winning Club Captain Bob Janney 88-22-66.

 


Saturday 24th March is the Hembling Cup with the new summer tee time's of 08.00

Harleston Engineering Texas Scramble

 

Saturday 10th Harleston Engineering held there Texas Scramble Competition. 8 teams took part in lovely golfing conditions. In a change to the usual format teams were drawn on the day. Captain Bob Janney thanked Harleston Engineering for there continued sponsorship, Willie and Sam for preparing the greens and Ali for the refreshments that followed. The winning team consisted of A Ereira, D Wells, D Bickers and R Green.

Sunday 11th was the re-arranged Stableford Competiton, again in perfect conditions a mixed field of men and ladies made the most of the course conditions with some good scores. 3rd went to Edd Bowles 34pts, 37pts losing again on countback Ron Walding and winning with 37pts Captain Bob Janney.

Mail on Sunday Matchplay

Sunday 4th March saw 5 members playing a home tie against Diss in the Mail on Sunday Matchplay Competition, with the team consisting of Syer Shulver, Edd Bowles, Niall Gill, Ben Cable and Alan Ereira. In very difficult conditions with a blustery wind and driving rain Beccles managed a home win with Syer, Edd and Ben beating the visiting opponents. The team are now waiting to find out who they will meet in the next round.

Monthly Medal Qualifier

Saturday 3rd March Beccles Golf Club held their Monthly Medal Qualifing Competition. A large field took part and made the most of the clear conditions at the start of the round. Several players struggled as the temperature dropped and rain clouds moved in with only the top 3 players beating the Competition Standard Scratch. 3rd place went to Bryan Debenham 79-13-66, 2nd Paul Segust 82-16-66 and winning Nigel Jeffs 92-27-65.

CAPTAIN'S BIRTHDAY COMPETITION

 

Saturday 25th a qualifing Stableford Competition was held, with players enjoying good starting conditions scores stayed reasonably low. Playing in his first qualifier and winning Matt Hunter with 41pts and a handicap cut of 2.4, 2nd Alan Ereira 35pts and taking 3rd on countback with 35pts Ben Cable.

Sunday 26th Club Captain Bob Janney held his Birthday Competition Trophy, with a mixed field the ladies competition was won by Jula Janney, the main competition places were 3rd Steve Driver 39pts, 2nd losing 1st on countback Ron Walding also 39pts and winning with 39pts Steve Tomlinson.

At last we played golf...

TWO WEEK LAYOFF.......and now normall service is resumed

Saturday 18th after a two week layoff due to snow was a greensomes competition.... A large field took part and struggled in a bitter wind, considering the clear conditions scores were quite low. 3rd place with 34pts David Wells and Dell Collyer, 2nd losing on countback Ben Cable and Christian Lever 35pts and winning with 35pts President George Savill and Rod Green.

Sunday 19th January was a Stableford competition. All the players enjoyed a bright but cool day, but found the bitter wind that whipped up half way through the round difficult to contend with. 3rd place went to Steve Driver 31pts, 2nd Senior's Captain Ron Walding 34pts losing on countback and 1st Nigel Jeffs 34pts.


Saturday 25th February is a Stableford Competition and Sunday 26th will be Bob Janney Competition.

Saturday 28th January Captain Bob Janney organised a Greensomes Competition... A very large field took part with players playing with preferred partners. With an early frost and wet greens players struggled to read putts and judge shots into the greens. Last years Club Doubles winners Steve Driver and Keith Pickering showed that they will be again a force to beat winning with 40pts, 2nd place went to Competition Organiser Willie White and Bryan Debenham.


Club Captain Bob Janney thanked Willie for preparing the Greens and Ali for the hot refreshments.


Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th February will be Qualifing Medals. 



Minutes Silence for Mike Garrood

Saturday 21st the Club held a fourball better ball competition, with partners drawn on the morning. Due to severe bad weather the competition was abandoned after 9 holes.

Before play commenced Club Captain Bob Janney and members held a minutes silence in respect for long serving Club Member Mike Garrood who past away early hours of Friday morning. Mike represented the Club playing in several County Matches and will be sadley missed by members new and old. Mike was a well liked, bubbly character who for many years helped with the Junior Coaching session, Mike (Scoop) was also for several years the Clubs Press Officer and would spend many an afternoon compiling his press reports. Mike's chosen Charity was the East Anglian Air Ambulance and donations were made by all members and the winning players donated thier prizes into the fund. The Club is looking to hold an annual Competition in Mike Garrood's memory.

Saturdays results for 9 holes were 2nd winning on countback Seniors Captain Ron Walding and Steve Driver 20pts and winning with 21pts Secretary Ray Walding and Steve Tomlinson.

Sunday 22nd January Club Captain Bob Janney held a Non Qualifing Medal, players enjoyed a dryer day than those that took part on Saturday but found conditions difficult due to a very gusty and strong wind. Returning member Marty Barker won the competition 87-17-70, 2nd Alan Ereira 84-11-73, 3rd Paul Segust 90-16-74. Again the flag was flown at half mast, and members contributed to past member Mike Garrood's Charity. Club Captain Bob Janney thanked David Neech for his help with the greens.

Saturday 28th January is a Greensomes Competition

Non Qualifirer January Stableford

Saturday 14th January, members played a Non-qualifing Stableford. A large field took part on a cold bright day. Scores were quite high with players not worrying about alterations to their handicaps.

Several players continued there good form with 3rd place going to Kevin Ayers 37pts, 2nd Ron Walding 39pts and winning with 39pts Nick Hope.

Captain Bob Janney thanked Willie and Sam for preparing the greens, Ann for the hot refreshments and President George Savill for the electrical work carried out in the Club House.

Saturday 21st January will be a Fourball Better Ball partners drawn on the day.

Captains Drive In

CAPTAIN'S DRIVE IN AT BECCLES

Monthly Medal Winner President George Savill and Captain Bob Janney

 

Saturday 7th saw for the 1st time 3 Captain's 'Driving In'. The Club Captain Bob Janney, Senior's Captain Ron Walding and Ladies Captain Sam Cooper. Due to the change all 3 Captain's played together and had their 'Drive In' off the 7th giving all the members an opportunity to raise funds for the Captain's Charity. With a back wind it was decided that the longest of the 3 drives would win and after playing an exploding golf ball Senior's Captain Ron Walding won with a drive of 212yrd.


Support was very good for the Monthly Medal, with players turning up who usually give medals a miss to support the incoming Captain's.


With conditions being cold but fair to start the wind soon picked up and made the going very difficult. Several players commented on how difficult it was to stay on their feet at times let alone hit the ball.


Continuing the way he finished the year Club President George Savill won with 81-15-66, 2nd Bryan Debenham 81-13-68 and 3rd Nigel Jeffs 97-27-70. Captain Bob Janney thanked Ron, Sam and Mike for their work on the course in the week in preperation for the day, Will and Sam for preparing the green and Bob's wife Jula for the hot refreshments.


Sunday 8th was the first of the Sunday Order of Merit competitions. With a mixed field everyone enjoyed the winter sun and were pleased that the previous days wind had dropped.
Grant Bartlett took 3rd on 33pts, 2nd place went to Ben Cable losing on countback with 34pts and winning and taking the 1st of the Order of Merit points Senior's Captain Ron Walding also on 34pts.

Last Event of 2011

PRESIDENT GEORGE IN GOOD FORM GOING INTO 2012 

Saturday 31st saw 25 players (including 6 ladies) turned out for the last competition of the year. With heavy rain over night Vice Captain Bob Janney warned people to take care as the grown underfoot was very slippery.


With the rain staying away everyone enjoyed the winter sunshine and a bit of wind that made a few of the holes interesting. Unfortunately out going President Rod Cooper was unfortunate on the 2nd, to the amusement of his playing partners one minute he was thee the next laying flat on his back by the 2nd green after slipping on the moss.


Scoring was quite high with 3rd place going to Steve Tomlinson 36pts, 2nd place with David Wells 37pts and winning with 38pts the new incoming President George Savill.


Vice Captain Bob Janney thanked Willie and Sam for preparing the greens and Ann for the refreshments. Saturday 7th will be the Club Captain, Ladies Captain and Senior's Captains Drive In. Followed by a qualifing Monthly Medal.
