A tour of the course

1/10 1st : Trinders - W 384 yards L 371 yards par 4
10th : Laurels - W 434 yards L 430 yards par 4

The 1st is a good opening hole. The bunker on the right comes into play for longer hitters. Green-side bunkers, left and right, will swallow up a misdirected approach.

The 10th is the hardest hole on the course. To get home in two a great drive is needed. A second shot hit from an uneven downhill lie to a green sloping from front to back is a shot-maker’s dream.

2/11 2nd : Memorial - W 171yards L 140 yards par 3
11th : Weeping Willow - W 216 yards L 192 yards par 3

The 2nd is a gentle downhill par 3 with bunkers left and right. An accurate tee shot is required to this front to back sloping green.

As the 11th hole this becomes a great par 3 where a long accurate tee shot is needed to avoid the bunkers as the entrance seems very narrow.

3/12 3rd : Furthest Point - W 392 yards L 340 yards par 4
12th : Twin Oaks - W 373 yards L 368 yards par 4

Played from the 3rd tee, with out-of-bounds all down the left, long hitters can reduce the hole by taking some off the corner – but don’t be greedy!

From the 12th tee the big oak on the right comes into play; only the brave can take it out over the top. A wayward shot can land you in rough, under the trees on the right or out-of-bounds down the left.

4/13

4th : Spectacles - W 371 yards L 304 yards par 4
13th : Poplars - W 336 yards L 336 yards par 4

The 4th hole offers a tough tee shot where the right side should be avoided at all costs. Wrong clubbing for your second shot will result in the ball coming back off the front of the green.

From the 13th tee placement is paramount. A tee shot favouring the left side of the fairway can set up a tricky approach. The art of green reading is tested here.

5/14

5th : Ups and Downs - W 483 yards L 448 yards par 5
14th : High Five - W 415 yards par 4 L 413 yards par 4

For the big hitter the 5th offers a good chance to get home in two, with a carefully placed tee shot down the right hand side. Strategically placed bunkers will swallow a misdirected shot into the green.

The 14th is another hard par 4, requiring a straight drive which normally gathers to the left. A good second is required to carry the four bunkers to the green whilst avoiding the other two guarding the green left and right.

6/15

6th : County Heights - W 434 yards L 430 yards par 4

15th : Roller Coaster - W 384 yards L 371 yards par 4

The 6th is a tough fairway to hit, particularly from the elevated competition tee, because of the wind and camber of the fairway – and beware of the Arkley bounce. The second shot always plays longer than its yardage. With three bunkers at the top of the hill and two more left and right to catch the wayward second, a par is a good score here.

On the shorter 15th caution off the tee will leave you with an uphill second and the shot requiring more club than you think. A tricky green which runs away from the front with some tricky borrows.

7/16

7th : Bunkered - W 187 yards L 150 yards par 3
16th : Round the Bend - W 284 yards L 236 yards par 4

The 7th, a par 3, has a generous green with a big cross bunker guarding the front and two more either side that will catch any wild tee shot. Subtle borrows can make for a difficult two putt.

The 16th is a great match-play hole. A mid-iron off the tee will set up a short, tricky approach with a great chance for a birdie.

8/17

8th : Valley - W 412 yards par 4 L 371 yards par 5
17th : Long Climb - W 434 yards L 454 yards par 5

The 8th is a tough par 4. A long, straight drive is a must with a wayward shot being gathered by the pond on the left in the dip. The uphill second plays longer than the yardage suggests so correct club selection is essential.

The 17th is the last par 5 on the course; big hitters can make it in two but otherwise three nicely controlled shots should make the green. A right to left tee shot is required to shape the ball around the corner but greed can find your ball in the out-of-bounds down the left. Trouble awaits inaccuracy from tee to green.

9/18

9th : Walk on Water - W 165 yards L 158 yards par 3
18th : Over and Out - W 160 yards L 158 yards par 3

The 9th presents a blind tee shot, with a well-guarded green surrounded by five bunkers. Generally plays into a breeze. A good front nine finish.

Played from the 18th tee the large oak on the right can come into play if the pin is on the right or the wind is from the left. Many a match is won or lost here.
