Arkley Golf Club

Membership

We offer full or 5-day membership to both ladies and men, who pay the same subscriptions and have equal voting rights. In order to promote and recruit new members to the Ladies Section the club also has a restricted seven-day Ladies membership (agreed in consultation with the Ladies). The restriction applies to weekend afternoons and is cheaper than full membership. The offer is for a limited period, until such time as the section achieves its target membership. Our 5-day members can play in the afternoon at week-ends, after 4.30pm in the summer or 3.00pm in the winter.

For those just taking up the game, or yet to obtain a handicap, we offer a probationary membership. This comprises social membership plus a package of lessons with our professional aiming at a ‘fast track’ to full membership. The cost of this is £80 plus VAT for social membership, which entitles you to use all the facilities of the clubhouse, plus £170 (a discounted price) for a course of ten half-hour lessons with our professional. Following this you may apply for 5- or 7-day playing membership.

Our Juniors section is thriving, with competitions within the club. Once a handicap of 28 for boys or 36 for girls is achieved they are entitled to enter all club competitions at weekends, playing after midday in the summer or 11.30am in the winter. Juniors also have a lunchtime slot at weekends except when there are club competitions.

There are many opportunities for competitive golf for those who wish, both within the Club and in matches against other clubs.

  • For the men we have a Scratch Team, a Club Team, a Stags (Seniors) section, a Rabbits (high handicap) section and a Juniors section.

  • For ladies, there are matches against other clubs in the summer and Pearson matches during the winter (inter-county competition). We compete in other external competitions, including Ping 4-ball, Bader Salver, Daily Mail Foursomes, Mail on Sunday, and National Nines, a competition among 9-hole golf clubs throughout Great Britain. (In 2010, Arkley won the English championships only losing to Scotland in the final of the overall competition.)

Additional benefits

Members have the opportunity to play on other courses as part of one of our teams. There are three other ways to play other courses at preferential rates.

  • The club is a member of the Association of James Braid Courses. This offers the opportunity to enjoy preferential green fees at any of the James Braid courses both in the UK and overseas. [link to list of James Braid Courses]
  • The 1909 Club is a group of golf clubs which, like Arkley, were founded in 1909. These clubs will give the courtesy of the course to all members of other 1909 clubs which are over 50 miles distant, as the crow flies, once per year. A maximum of eight players from a club can book to play on any one day. To play at one of these clubs, free of charge, contact must only be made through our Club Secretary.  [link to list of 1909 clubs]
  • There are more than 1,100 clubs in England in the County Card scheme. Host clubs offer reduced green fees to holders of County Cards. The County Card is a booklet containing a list of all the participating clubs in the scheme [link to list of participating clubs] and members may generally play at least once per year at any of the clubs on the list. Restrictions may apply to the time and day of the week. Membership is open to both men and ladies. The card may generally be used for groups of up to 4 players. The cost of an individual County Card is £15 and is valid 1 April-31 March.
